성령 충만을 받으라
(행 1:1-8, 쉬운) [1] <성령을 보내시겠다는 약속> 데오빌로 각하, 제가 먼저 쓴 책에서 저는 예수님께서 하신 일과 가르치신 말씀을 비롯하여, [2] 예수님께서 선택하신 사도들에게 성령의 힘으로 교훈을 내리신 후에 하늘로 올라가신 날까지, 예수님과 관련된 내용을 다 기록했습니다. [3] 예수님께서는 고난을 받으신 후, 사도들에게 자신의 모습을 보여 주셨고, 여러 가지 방법으로 자기가 살아 계시다는 것을 증언하셨습니다. 예수님은 사십 일 동안이나 이 사람들에게 나타나셨으며, 하나님의 나라에 관해 말씀하셨습니다. [4] 어느 날, 예수님께서는 사도들과 함께 식사를 하시다가 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. "예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 내 아버지께서 약속하신 선물을 기다려라. 이 약속의 내용은 내가 전에 말했고, 너희도 들은 것이다. [5] 약속의 내용은 이것이다. 요한은 물로 세례를 주었지만, 너희는 얼마 안 있어 성령으로 세례를 받을 것이다." [6] <예수님께서 하늘로 올라가시다> 사도들이 한자리에 모여서 예수님께 물었습니다. "주님, 주님께서 이스라엘을 다시 회복시키실 때가 지금입니까?" [7] 그러자 예수님께서 대답하셨습니다. "때와 시기는 오직 아버지의 권한으로 정하신 것이니, 너희가 알 일이 아니다. [8] 다만 성령이 너희에게 오시면, 너희는 권능을 받아 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 그리고 땅 끝까지 가서 내 증인이 될 것이다."
오늘 본문을 기록한 저자는 의사 누가로써
시리아의 안디옥 출생이며
소아시아 (현재의 터키)의 길리기아 다소에서 의사로 개업하고 있을 때
사도 바울의 전도로 그리스도교로 개종(改宗)한 사람입니다.
그는 바울과 함께 전도여행을 하기도 하고
그와 함께 감옥에 갇히기도 했습니다.
그러면서 "누가복음"과 "사도행전," 두 권의 성경을 썼는데
사도행전의 서두에서 누가는
성도와 교회의 핵심이 되는 중요한 요소를 소개하고 있습니다.
다름이 아닌 성령 세례입니다.
(행 1:4-5, 우리말) [4] 그들과 함께 모였을 때 예수께서 이렇게 명령하셨습니다. "예루살렘을 떠나지 말고 너희가 내게 들은 대로 내 아버지가 약속하신 선물을 기다리라. [5] 요한은 물로 세례를 주었지만 너희는 며칠 안에 성령으로 세례를 받을 것이다."
첫째, 성령님은 우리와 언제나 함께 계셔주십니다.
예수님께서는 요한복음 14:16에서 성령님의 역할을
(요 14:16, 개정) 내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니
라고 설명하셨습니다.
'보혜사'라는 말은 '곁에 있는 사람'을 뜻하는 '파라클레테'라는 희랍어에서 온 것인데
고대 법정에는 변호인으로 자기의 친구 중에
가장 유력한 사람을 하나 또는 그 이상 세우는 것이 보통 관습처럼 되어있었다.
그런데 이런 변호인을 헬라어로는 "파라클레테스"(Paracletes)"
또 라틴어로는 "애드버커터스 (Advocatus)"라고 불렀습니다.
이 사람들이 친구를 변호한 것은 보수를 받기위해서가 아니라
친구를 위하는 사랑에서였습니다.
곧 공정하고 바른 재판을 하는데 도움이 될 수 있는
변호를 하기 위하여 친히 법정에 출두하여 변호했던 것입니다.
저들은 어떻게 행동해야 하며 어떤 말을 해야 할 것에 관해서
친구에게 가르쳐 주었을 뿐만 아니라
친구를 대신하여 변호도 하고 행동도 하여
마치 친구의 소송 사건을 자기의 소송사건처럼 생각하고
어려운 재판을 하는데 있어서 친구의 편이 되어 주었습니다. (메이어 펄만)
<상한 감정의 치유> <치유하시는 은혜>등의 스테디셀러로
우리에게 친숙한 데이빗 A. 씨맨즈는
인도 선교사였던 부모님의 뒤를 이어 인도에서 16년간 선교 사역을 하였고
현재는 애즈베리 신학대학에서 목회학을 가르치고 있습니다.
그의 글에 이런 일화가 있습니다.
한 사람이 심장 수술을 받게 되었을 때의 일입니다.
"수술을 받기 전날 한 간호사가 내 병실로 찾아왔습니다.
간호사는 내 손을 잡고는 나에게 꽉 잡아 보라고 했습니다.
그리고 나에게 말했습니다.
"내일 수술을 받으시는 동안 당신은 당신의 심장과 분리된 상태에서
오직 기계의 도움에 의해 생명이 유지될 것입니다.
당신의 심장 수술이 성공적으로 끝나면
당신의 심장 기능은 다시 정상으로 움직이고
당신은 마침내 회복실에서 깨어나게 될 것입니다.
그러나 당신은 약 6시간 동안 움직일 수 없는 상태에 놓일 것입니다.
당신이 비록 움직일 수도 없고 말도 못하고
심지어는 눈을 뜨고 싶어도 뜨지 못하는 상태일지라도
당신의 의식은 완전한 가운데 주위에서 일어나는 모든 것들을 들어 알게 될 것입니다. 나는 당신이 완전히 회복할 때까지 당신 곁에 머물겠습니다.
비록 당신이 어찌할 바를 확실히 알지 못하는 가운데 빠질지라도
당신이 내 손길을 느끼게 될 것입니다."
간호사가 내게 말해주었던 일들이 나에게 그대로 일어났습니다.
나는 몇 시간 동안 내 손을 잡아 준 간호사의 손길을 느낄 수 있었습니다.
그것이 내가 어려움을 경험하는 동안
내게 얼마나 큰 위로가 되었는지 상상할 수 없을 것입니다!"
우리의 삶속에서도 성령님께서 계속 함께해주실 것이란 약속은
때로 고난과 슬픔의 골짜기를 혼자 가는 것 같은
외로운 우리의 손을 잡으시고 위로와 소망을, 그리고 힘을 주신다는 것입니다.
이것이 예수님께서 말씀하신 바
(요 14:16, 개정) 내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니
둘째, 성령은 성도의 능력이 되십니다.
(행 1:8, 개정) 오직 성령이 너희에게 임하시면 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아와 땅 끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라 하시니라
8절에 "너희가 권능을 받고"라고 했는데 권능이란 무엇입니까?
초자연적인 하나님의 능력을 뜻합니다.
사람의 어떤 노력으로도 힘으로도 할 수 없는 일을
할 수 있게 하시는 하나님의 능력이 권능입니다.
권능이란 말은 원어성경 헬라어에서 보면 ‘두나밋’이란 단어를 사용합니다.
이 말에서 영어 dynamite란 말이 파생되었습니다.
다시 말하면 권능은 영적인 폭발력, 영적 다이너마이트를 뜻합니다.
에너지 화되는 물질들이 있는데 그중에 대표적인 것이 우라늄입니다.
단 1g의 우라늄 235가 분열을 하면
TNT 20 ton(톤)에 해당하는 에너지가 방출된다고 합니다.
전기로 환산하면 2,660만kwh 를 생산해 내는데
이것은 인구 4만의 도시가 하루 동안 사용하는 막대한 힘과 같다는 것입니다.
그런데 성령님은 이것과도 비교할 수 없는 더 엄청난 능력을 만드십니다.
우라늄을 아무리 에너지화 해도 귀신을 쫓아낼 수 없습니다.
또한 어떤 에너지도 소경의 눈을 뜨게 할 수 없습니다.
어떤 에너지도 사람의 마음을 변화시킬 수 없습니다.
그러나 성령의 권능은 악한 심령을 새롭게 변화시킵니다.
죽은 사람과 사회를 살려냅니다.
우리가 복음을 전할 때 사람들이 복음을 들어도 거절하는 이유가 무엇입니까?
(고후 4:4, 개정) 그 중에 이 세상의 신이 믿지 아니하는 자들의 마음을 혼미하게 하여 그리스도의 영광의 복음의 광채가 비치지 못하게 함이니 그리스도는 하나님의 형상이니라
라고 했습니다.
악한 영들이 사람들의 마음을 지배하고 있어서 복음을 거부케 되는 것입니다.
우리가 어떻게 사람들의 마음을 지배하고 있는
악한 영들을 쫓아낼 수 있습니까?
그것은 인간의 힘으로 되지 않습니다.
이 세상의 힘으로도 되지 않습니다.
칼의 힘이나 권력으로 되지 않습니다.
사람의 힘으로는 절대로 되지 않습니다.
그러므로 성령의 능력을 힘입어야 합니다.
복음 전도자 찰스 피니는 전도에 대해 말하기를
"전도란 사탄의 권세 아래 잡혀 있는 영혼들에게 다가가서
그 사탄의 세력을 부수고 그 영혼을 탈취해 오는 것이다"
라고 하였습니다.
어떻게 우리가 사탄의 권세와 그 세력을 부수고
잡혀있는 영혼들을 구원할 수 있습니까?
사람의 힘이나 방법으로는 안 됩니다.
오직 성령의 능력이 임할 때 영혼들을 구원하는 일을 할 수 있습니다.
오직 예수 그리스도만이 사람의 마음을 지배하는
악한 영의 역사를 이길 수 있는 것입니다.
오늘도 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도께서 요청하여
우리에게 보내주신 보혜사 성령님은 우리 안에 역사하셔서
그 힘으로 악한 영을, 사탄의 영을 이기게 해주십니다.
(요일 3:8, 개정) 죄를 짓는 자는 마귀에게 속하나니 마귀는 처음부터 죄를 범함이라 하나님의 아들이 나타나신 것은 마귀의 일을 멸하려 하심이라
그러므로 우리는 성령의 능력을 힘입어야 하며,
성령의 능력을 힘입기 위하여 기도하는 성도들이 되어야 합니다.
종교개혁 당시 강력한 원수들에 맞서는 루터는 다음과 같이 기록하였습니다.
"사단은 분노를 나타내고 있다.
경건치 않은 승려들은 공모하고 있으며, 우리는 전쟁의 위협을 당하고 있다.
그러나 우리는 믿음과 기도로써
담대히 하나님의 보좌 앞으로 나아가라고 사람들을 권할 것이다.
그리하면 원수들은 하나님의 성령으로 말미암아
정복되어 잠잠하게 될 것이다.
우리에게 가장 필요하고 급한 것은 기도이다.
이 싸움에 사용되어야 할 무기는 오직 성령의 검뿐이다."
이처럼 온 세계를 바꿔놓은 위대한 종교개혁의 큰 능력은
밀실의 드린 기도와 성령의 능력에서 나왔습니다.
아우크스부르크의 투쟁의 기간 동안에도
루터는 적어도 하루에 세 시간 기도하지 않는 날이 없었습니다.
초대교회의 부흥은 예루살렘을 떠나지 않고 기도함에 있었습니다.
바로 기도가 성령의 능력을 불러왔고
세상을 변화시키는 역사가 나타납니다.
셋째, 성령님은 지혜를 주십니다.
성경은 성령님에 대해 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다.
(사 11:2, 개정) 그의 위에 여호와의 영 곧 지혜와 총명의 영이요 모략과 재능의 영이요 지식과 여호와를 경외하는 영이 강림하시리니
이처럼 성령은 지혜의 영이시기에
하나님의 영이 임할 때 사람은 지혜가 충만하여집니다.
(신 34:9, 공동) 눈의 아들 여호수아는 하느님의 영을 받아 지혜가 넘쳤다. 모세가 그에게 손을 얹어주었던 것이다. 그의 지휘 아래 이스라엘 백성은 야훼께서 이미 모세에게 분부하신 일을 다 이루었다.
여호수아가 그 많은 이스라엘 백성을 이끌고
가나안으로 들어갈 수 있는 지도력을 발휘했던 것은
그가 여호와의 신을 통해 지혜로운 사람이 되었기 때문이었습니다.
성령을 통해 지혜를 얻은 스데반 집사는 회당에서 변론할 때 승리하였습니다.
(사도행전 6:8-10, 공동) [8] 스데반은 하느님의 은총과 성령의 힘을 가득히 받아 백성들 앞에서 놀라운 일들과 굉장한 기적들을 행하고 있었다. [9] 그 때 이른바 "자유인의 회당"에 소속된 키레네와 알렉산드리아 사람들과 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람들이 일어나 스데반과 논쟁을 벌였다. [10] 그러나 그들은 지혜와 성령을 받아 말하는 스데반을 당해 낼 도리가 없었다.
또한 성령께서는 성도들의 삶을 인도하셔서 형통케 하여주십니다.
(요 16:13, 개정) 그러나 진리의 성령이 오시면 그가 너희를 모든 진리 가운데로 인도하시리니 그가 스스로 말하지 않고 오직 들은 것을 말하며 장래 일을 너희에게 알리시리라
(갈 5:25) 우리가 성령으로 삶을 얻었으니, 우리는 성령이 인도해 주심을 따라 살아갑시다.
"이레 제주 조랑말 타운"의 대표인 강상철 집사님이 이런 간증을 했습니다.
제주도에서 태어난 강상철 집사는
그런데 고등학교 때 친구 따라 기도회 모임에 갔다가 신앙을 가지게 되었습니다.
모여서 기도하고 성경을 읽는데 마음에 감동이 와서
그때부터 그는 '나도 하나님 믿어야지.'하고 결심을 했습니다.
대학을 졸업하고 일본으로 건너갔습니다.
광야 같은 객지 생활 가운데 한국 사람이라고 멸시도 많이 당했습니다.
쉬는 시간에 성경을 보면 일본 사람이
성경을 빼앗아 집어던지고 마구 놀렸습니다.
그래서 그 다음부터는 꼭 화장실에 가서만 성경을 보았다고 합니다.
그런데 많은 말씀 중에서도
시편 37편 7절에 있는 말씀이 그의 마음속에 탁 와 닿았습니다.
(시 37:7, 개정) 여호와 앞에 잠잠하고 참고 기다리라 자기 길이 형통하며 악한 꾀를 이루는 자 때문에 불평하지 말지어다
그래서 '하나님, 나는 기다리겠습니다.
하나님의 축복을 기다리겠습니다.
때를 기다리겠습니다.'하고 기도했습니다.
그 후 고향에 돌아왔습니다.
별로 할 일이 없어서 관광 가이드도 하고,
택시 기사도 하고, 이것저것 하면서 계속해서
'하나님 내 때가 언제입니까?'하고 기도했는데,
마침내 하나님께서 그에게 때를 허락해 주셨습니다.
영업이 잘 안되어 문을 닫은 승마장이 하나 있었는데,
기도만 하면 하나님께서 '그 승마장을 사라'고 하시는 것이었습니다.
그러나 택시 운전수가 어떻게 승마장을 사겠습니까?
그런데 마침 그 승마장에 불이 나 버렸습니다.
이제는 아무도 거들떠보지 않게 되었습니다.
그래서 그는 집을 저당 잡히고 대출을 받아
불에 탄 승마장을 헐값에 살 수 있었습니다.
그리고 승마장을 깨끗이 수리해서 승마 공연장으로 만들었습니다.
말을 잘 훈련시켜서 재주를 부리게 하니까
신혼부부들과 관광객들이 하루에 300명씩 모여들었습니다.
그는 성공하여 돈을 많이 벌었습니다.
하나님 앞에 감사하고 자기가 번 돈은 모두 선교를 위해서 썼습니다.
그러자 지금은 사업이 더 커져서,
새로운 조랑말 타운을 건설하기 위해
대단위 토지를 매입하고 기도 중에 있다고 합니다.
그는 성령께서 인도하심을 통해 큰 형통을 이루게 된 것입니다.
그러므로 우리가 열심히 일하고 노력하는 것도 중요하지만
하나님 앞에 나와서 기도하며 성령의 인도하심을 받을 때 형통하게 됩니다.
(시 127:2, 우리말) 너희가 일찍 일어나는 것도, 늦게까지 자지 않으며 고생해서 얻은 것을 먹는 것도 헛되다. 여호와께서는 사랑하시는 사람들에게 잠을 주시기 때문이다.
사랑하는 외국인교회 성도들은
성령님과 동행하여 지혜를 얻고 그 인도하심을 받아 모두 형통하시기를 축원 합니다.
Be filled with the Holy Spirit
(Acts 1:1-8, NIV) [1] In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach [2] until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. [3] After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. [4] On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command： "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." [6] So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" [7] He said to them： "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
The author of the passages for the sermon today is Luke who was a doctor. He was born in Antioch, Syria. When he opened his business as a doctor, in Tarsus Cilicia, which is present day Turkey, he accepted Jesus because of St. Paul. After that, he traveled with St. Paul for evangelism and even was imprisoned with him. It was during that time he wrote two Scriptures, the gospel Luke and Acts.
At the beginning of Acts, Luke introduces the important element which is the core of the Church and Christianity. It is the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
(Acts 1:4-5, NIV) [4] On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command： "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
First, the Holy Spirit is always with us all the time.
In John 14:16, Jesus explained the role of the Holy Spirit like this.
(Jn 14:16, NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
The word, Counselor, came from the Greek word, Paraclete which means "a man who is with me."
In ancient courts, it was a custom that an accused person appointed one or two men from his own friends as his defenders.
People called this defender Paracletes in Greek and Advocatus in Latin.
These people defended their friends not for benefit, but because they loved their friends.
For the right and fair trial, they came to the court and defended their friends.
They helped their friend who were accused know how to act and what to say. They even defended their friends by themselves as if the trial was their own.
The author of the books, "Healing for Damaged Emotions" and "Lord, I Want to Be Whole: The Power of Prayer and Scripture in Emotional Healing," David Seamands served India for 16 years preceeded by his parents who were Indian missionaries. He taught Pastoral care in Asbury seminary. In his book, there is a story.
One day, a man faced heart surgery.
"One day before the surgery, a nurse came to my hospital room. She grabbed my hand and asked me to grab it firmly. And, she told me, 'Tomorrow, while you will be having your operation, your heart will be separated from your body. Your life will be supported by a machine. After your heart surgery, your heart will work properly and you will wake in a recovery room. However, you won't move at all for about 6 hours. Although you cannot move, speak, and open your eyes, your consciousness will be clear and you will recognize whatever happens surround you. I will be with you until you will fully recover. Although you don't know what to do, you will feel the touch of my hands.
The things what the nurse told had happened exactly.
I could feel the touch of nurse for several hours.
You might not imagine how it comforted me while I experienced the difficulties."
In our life, the promise that the Holy Spirit will be with us all the time means that while we pass the valley of hardship and sorrow, he will grab our hands and comfort us all the time.
Jesus mentioned it in John 14:16,
(Jn 14:16, NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--
Second, the Holy Spirit is the power of the believer.
(Acts 1:8, NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
It says in verse 8, "you will receive power". Then what is power? It means the supernatural power of God. Power is the power of God that can do what cannot be done with any effort or power of man. The original text for power in greek is 'dunamis'. The word dynamite comes from this. In other words, power is a spiritual explosion, a spiritual dynamite.
There are materials that can change into energy, and one of the most well known is uranium. If just 1 gram of uranium-235 splits, the energy equivalent of about 20 tons of TNT is released. If converted to electricity, it creates 26,600,000 kilowatt-hours, and this is enough to power a city with a 40 thousand population for a day.
But the Holy Spirit creates a great power which is incomparable to this. No matter how you convert uranium into energy, you cannot chase out demons. And no energy can make a blind man see. No energy can change a person's heart. But the power of the Holy Spirit renews an evil heart. It revives a dead person and a dead society.
What is the reason that people reject our gospel when we share it? It says,
(2Corinthians 4:4, NIV) The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
They reject the gospel because the evil spirits rule over the hearts of the people. Then how can we chase away the evil spirits that rule the people's hearts? It cannot be done with man's strength. It is not done with any power of this world. It is not done with the power of the sword. It can never be done by the power of man.
And so we must receive the power of the Holy Spirit.
Evangelist Charles Finney said about evangelism, "Evangelism is going to souls who are caught under the power of Satan, breaking that power, and bringing back that soul."
Then how can we break the power of Satan and save the lost souls? It is not done by human power or methods. We can only save the lost spirits when the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon us.
Only Jesus Christ can defeat the work of the evil spirits ruling over a person's heart. The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, was sent by the prayer of Jesus Christ the Son of God, and even today he works in us and helps us defeat the evil spirits the spirit of Satan.
(1John 3:8, NIV) He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
Therefore we must be clothed with the power of the Holy Spirit, and we must be a congregation that prays for this.
At the time of the Reformation, Luther who had to stand against great enemies recorded the following. "Satan is showing anger. Ungodly priests are plotting, and we are threatened with war. But we will encourage people to boldly go forward to God's throne with faith and prayer. Then the enemy will be conquered by the Holy Spirit of God and will become calm. What we most urgently need is prayer. The only weapon which must be used in this battle is the sword of the Holy Spirit."
Like this, the great power of the Reformation that changed the whole world came from the prayers prayed in secret and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Even during the fight of Augsburg, there wasn't a day that Luther did not pray at least three hours. The revival of the early church came from remaining in Jerusalem to pray. Prayer brought the power of the Holy Spirit, and the work of changing the world began.
Third, the Holy Spirit gives wisdom.
The bible says about the Holy Spirit,
(Isa. 11:2, NIV) The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him--the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD--
Like this, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wisdom, when the Spirit of God comes upon a man, they are filled with wisdom.
(Deut. 34:9, NIV) Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the LORD had commanded Moses.
Joshua guided the Israelites into the land of Canaan. The reason he was such a good leader was because God made him into a wise man through God's spirit.
Stephen had received wisdom from the Holy Spirit, and could win the argument that took place in the synagogue.
(Acts 6:8-10, NIV) [8] Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. [9] Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, [10] but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
The Holy Spirit also guides the lives of the congregation and lets them prosper.
(Jn 16:13, NLT) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.
(Gl 5:25, NLT) Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
The representative of Jeju island's pony village, deacon Kang Sang-Chul gave a testimony. Deacon Kang was born in Jeju island, and accepted Jesus by following his high school friend to a prayer meeting. They all gathered to pray, and read the bible. Deacon Kang was deeply touched, and decided to believe in God.
After graduating college, he went to Japan. His time in a foreign land, was like the wilderness. He was discriminated for being Korean. When he would read the bible during break, the Japanese would take his bible away and thew it away and teased him. So since then, he had to read the bible only in the bathroom. However, Psalms 37:7 came into his heart.
(Ps 37:7, NLT) Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don't worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
So he prayed, "God, I will wait. I will wait for your blessings, and I will wait for your time."
After then, he came back home. There wasn't much to do, so he worked as a tour guide, a taxi driver, and random jobs. He prayed, "God, when is my time to shine?". And right then, God gave him the answer to his prayer. There was a horse back riding track that failed in business and was closed. Whenever Deacon Kang prayed, the Lord commanded him to buy the riding track. But how could a taxi driver buy such a place? But then, the track got caught on fire.
And now, no one would even look at it. So he sold his house for a loan, and loaned money, and bought the track at a cheap price. He had the place cleaned up and repaired, and made it into a horse show. He trained the horses well and the horses performed well. So newly wed couples and tourists would come every day, even up to 300 each day. He was successful and earned lots of money. He was thankful to God, and donated all his money for missionary work. Then his work got bigger, and he is said to be working on a business to make a new village for ponies, so he is trying to buy lots of land, and is in prayer. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he had gained great prosperity.
Therefore, it is important for us to work hard, but our work takes wing only when we come before the Lord and pray, and receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
(Ps 127:2, NLT) It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.
Loving congregation, I bless that you will be with the Holy Spirit, walking with him and receiving his wisdom and prospering.
