Preface to the Korean Edition
It was 22 years ago that I began to contemplate a free life. My American poet friend used to dine at a small restaurant in Waltam, Massachusetts, named "Hola Hola." One evening in the winter of 1991, while she was eating, the owner, Frankie, asked her what her profession was. He was a recent immigrant from Hong Kong. When my friend told him she was a poet, Frankie excitedly declared that he was a poet too. He then handed her a self-published poetry collection. The poems were written in classical Chinese. My friend, who did not understand Chinese, gave the collection to me. I was deeply moved. I was deeply touched by the fact that the owner of a small restaurant had been writing poetry while performing monotonous and arduous work just to survive in America. So, I decided to write a novel that captured such a story. I wanted to explore the metaphysical dimension of immigrant life, rather than its material aspects.

내가 <자유로운 삶을 생각하게 된 건 22년 전 일이다. 나의 미국 시인 친구가 매사추세츠 주의 월탐에 있는, '홀라 훌라 라는 이름의 작은 식당에서 식사를 하곤 했다. 그런데 1991년 겨울 어느 날 저녁, 그녀가 식사를 하고 있는데, 식당 주인인 프랭키가 그녀에게 직업이 무엇이냐고 물었다. 그는 최근에 홍콩에서 온 이민자였다. 내 친구가 자기 직업을 시인이라고 하자, 프랭키는 흥분해서 자기도 시인이라고 했다. 그러더니 자비 출판한 시집 한 권을 그녀에게 건넸다. 시는 고전적인 형식의 중국어로 쓰여 있었다. 중국어를 모르는 내 친구는 나 에게 그 시집을 줬다. 나는 감동했다. 작은 식당 주인이 미국에서 살아남기 위해 단조롭고 고된 일을 하면서도 시를 써왔 다는 사실에 너무 감동했다. 그래서 나는 그런 이야기를 담은 소설을 쓰기로 결심했다. 나는 이민생활의 물질적인 측면이 아니라 형이상학적인 차원을 다루고 싶었다.
