| 참부모경 - 431. 통일신학대학원, 브리지포트대학과 세계대학연맹 참부모님께서는 1974년 4월 30일 미국 뉴욕 허드슨 강가 배리타운에 소재한 7만 평(58에이커; 385,000제곱평방미터) 부지의 가톨릭신학교를 인수해 1975년 10월 20일 미국 통일신학대학원으로 개교하셨다. 그리고 1986년 11월 21일 인가를 받아 신학과와 신학교육과의 석사학위 과정을 신설하였으며 가톨릭 개신교 유대교 등에서 교수들을 초빙해 초교파 대학원으로 운영하셨다. 이어서 1992년 4월 15일 브리지포트 대학교를 인수하셨다. 미국 코네티컷주 롱아일랜드해협에 위치한 브리지포트대학교는 1927년에 설립된 유서 깊은 대학이다. 참부모님께서는 세계 대학이 국가나 이념, 종교의 벽을 뛰어넘어 인류가 추구하는 공동 가치 실현에 앞장서야 한다고 보시고 1996년 1월 우루과이 몬테비데오에서 세계대학연맹 결성을 선언하셨다. 국제적인 인재를 양성하고 유엔을 통하여 세계의 지도적 인맥 체제를 구축하기 위해 유엔 대학 설립을 제창하셨다. 그리고 앞으로 학교라는 공간보다는 누구나 각자 처소에서 교육을 받을 수 있는 영상통신교육시대에 들어가게 된다고 말씀하셨다. 17 내가 배리타운에 신학교를 만든 것은 통일교회에 신학이 필요해서가 아니라 기독교 때문입니다. 그래서 유대교 교수, 천주교 교수, 장로교 교수 등을 데려다가 우대하는 것입니다. 그러니 이상하다는 것입니다. 통일교회 원리를 안 가르치고 간섭도 하지 않고 자기들이 마음대로 가르치도록 한다는 것입니다. 18 통일신학대학원이 미국에서 유명해지고 있습니다. 미국 신학계에서 문제의 신학교로 주시하고 있습니다. 시설이나 학구적인 실력에 있어서 어느 대학원 못지않은 수준에 올라갔지만, 정부가 정치적인 배경을 중심삼고 제동을 걸고 있습니다. 그렇지만 미국 신학자들이 관여되어 있기 때문에 정부도 어쩔 수 없이 인가를 안 내 줄 수 없는 차원에 와 있습니다. 19 배리타운의 신학대학원이 1986년 11월 21일에 설립 인가가 났습니다. 통일신학대학원입니다. 그것을 위해서 11년 동안 싸웠습니다. 뉴욕 주 교육위원회를 상대로 행정소송을 걸었습니다. 학교 설립 규정에 따라서 시설로부터 교수와 학생들까지 모든 것을 갖추었는데 왜 인가를 안 해주느냐는 것입니다. 미국에는 그럴 수 있는 법이 없습니다. 소송을 걸어서 우리가 1심에서 이겼습니다. 저쪽의 항소로 2심에 올라갔는데, 2심에서도 이겼다는 것입니다. 3심까지 올라갔습니다. 뉴욕주 입장에서는 3심에서도 지면 나라의 꼴이 안 되겠으니까 거기서 기각을 시켰습니다. ‘뉴욕주 교육위원회와 통일신학대학원이 의논해서 좋은 방향으로 해결하소.’라면서 기각시켜 버린 것입니다. 그것을 기각시켜 버린 지 4년 만에 인가가 났습니다. 20 아버님이 신학교를 세운 것은 미국을 구하기 위해서입니다. 기업체를 발전시키기 위해서 세운 것이 아닙니다. 현재의 신학교들은 미국을 구할 수 있는 능력이 없습니다. 앞으로는 우리 신학교 출신들이 이 나라에 영향을 끼칠 것입니다. 대학 교육도 그렇습니다. 현재 교육하는 것으로는 미국의 진로를 바꿀 수 없습니다. 재교육하는 데는 우리밖에 없습니다. 기독교 자체가 하나님의 뜻을 모릅니다. 그것을 아는 사람은 우리밖에 없으니 우리가 새로이 교육해야 된다는 것입니다. 지금까지 아버님이 이 신학교 설립을 서두른 것은 미국을 재교육하기 위해서입니다. 기독교를 새롭게 만들어서 새로운 미국, 새로운 자유세계를 만드는 것입니다. 21 내가 브리지포트대학을 인수했습니다. 미국에서 외국인으로서 종합대학을 인수한 사람은 나밖에 없습니다. 처음입니다. 이것이 기록입니다. 그렇기 때문에 사방에서 얼마나 반대를 했는지 모릅니다. 대학가마다 ‘지금 레버런 문이 미국의 교육분야를 점령하는 것은 미래의 미국을 망치기 위한 것이다.’라고 하면서 별의별 소문이 났습니다. 뉴욕타임스나 워싱턴포스트 등 신문들도 헐뜯었습니다. 내가 미국에 와서 나쁜 짓을 한 것은 하나도 없습니다. 밤이나 낮이나 당당하다는 것입니다. 당당한 사나이로 살아왔습니다. 22 아버님이 살아가는 생활의 천지, 철칙이 있습니다. 내가 하늘의 복이 있으면 복의 파이프를 달아 주려고 하기 때문에 아버님이 고생한 곳에 축복이 있는 것입니다. 브리지포트 대학이 코네티컷주에 있습니다. 내가 들어가 고생한 교도소가 있는 주입니다. 그곳이 축복을 받더라는 것입니다. 내가 브리지포트대학을 인수하지 않았으면 그 주가 부도나게 되어 있었습니다. 내가 어려운 대학교를 인수해서 이제는 자랑하는 도시가 되었습니다. 주목의 대상이 되었다는 것입니다. 그 주변의 주 가운데서 주목하는 도시가 되었습니다. 미국도 내가 잘되라고 기도하지 망하라고 기도하지 않았습니다. 수고한 곳입니다. 내가 버리고 떠나더라도 미국은 망하지 않는다는 것입니다. 23 학문이란 국경을 초월해야 되고 역사까지 초월해야 됩니다. 그런 관점에서 전 세계의 학자들이 한데 뭉쳐 교육을 하되 민족의 한계선에 지배를 받는 교육제도를 우리는 극복하자, 넘어가자고 하는 것입니다. 미국이면 미국을 위한 교육제도, 영국이면 영국을 위한 교육제도가 아니라 그것을 초월해서 우리가 새로이 구상하는 하나의 세계, 평화의 세계를 건설할 수 있는 교육제도를 마련해야 됩니다. 이러한 목표를 세워 놓고 거기에 알맞은 교육시설을 갖추지 않고는 온전한 교육을 할 수 없겠기 때문에 거기에 알맞은 대학교를 지으려고 합니다. 그래서 국제대학이사연맹을 만들려고 하는 것입니다. 24 앞으로는 아무나 통일교회 책임자가 못 됩니다. 책임자가 되려면 세계가 공통적으로 공인하는 시험 과정을 거쳐야 합니다. 한국의 군 책임자라고 하면 미국에도 군이 있기 때문에 그 책임자와 맞먹는 자격을 주는 것입니다. 그러면 어디에 가더라도 ‘당신, 무슨 책임자요?’라고 할 때 ‘군 책임자요.’라고 하면 몇 급이라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 다시 말하면 초등학교 교사라고 하면 어디에 가든지 다 통하는 것과 마찬가지입니다. 그렇게 제도화해야 됩니다. 그래서 내가 미국에 가서 서두른 것이 교육의 제도화입니다. 그것은 사람의 수로 제도화하는 것이 아니라 교육의 기반 위에서 해야 됩니다. 배리타운에서 서두른 것이 그것입니다. 이제는 본격적인 교육의 단계로 들어갑니다. 25 세계적으로 유명한 교수들과 각 분과의 전문가들을 모아서 새로운 백과사전을 편찬해야 됩니다. 앞으로 각 분야에서 가치적인 기준을 중심삼은 새로운 백과사전을 편찬할 것입니다. 모든 분야에서 혁명을 하기 위해서는 우선 그 원서가 되는 백과사전을 편찬해야 되겠다는 것입니다. 그래서 거기에 해당하는 전반적인 문제를 중심하고 일간지를 발간해서 세계의 젊은이들을 교육하려고 합니다. 그러려면 연합적인 교육기관이 필요하기 때문에 대학을 중심삼은 연맹을 편성해야 됩니다. 한 나라의 대학을 가지고는 안 됩니다. 대학들을 연결시켜 세계에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 방향성을 제시하기 위한 준비를 하지 않으면 안 된다는 것입니다. 26 1996년 1월에 우루과이의 빅토리아플라자호텔에서 세계대학연맹 설립을 선언하였습니다. 대학연맹을 중심삼고 세계의 대학들이 공동가치의 신념을 인정하는 방향으로 나아가야 되겠다는 것입니다. 국가의 권익이 문제가 아니고 자유가 문제가 아닙니다. 학문의 세계에서는 인종을 초월하고 전통과 모든 국경을 초월해서 실력 있는 사람은 어느 대학이든지 거리낌 없이 문화적 배경에 방해를 받지 않고 자유롭게 활동하면서 실력을 발휘할 수 있어야 합니다. 그래서 어느 대학이든지 찾아가서 가르쳐 줄 수 있고 영향을 미칠 수 있는 길을 열려고 하는 것입니다. 27 남북미대학연맹을 중심삼고 아시아로부터 남북미와 유럽, 아프리카까지 연결하는 것입니다. 그래서 전문분야를 중심삼고 세계적으로 추대할 수 있는 사람이 누구냐 해서 매년 평가해 나가는 것입니다. 그렇게 됨으로써 대학이 사회를 움직이는 기반이 됩니다. 정신적인 면, 윤리적인 면, 도덕적인 면에서 기준을 세울 수 있는 것이 교육입니다. 그 교육 기반 위에서 하나님을 가르쳐 주면 됩니다. 여기에 언론기관이 연결되는 것입니다. 그래서 내적 외적으로 보조를 맞추게 될 때에는 세계가 다른 데로 가려야 갈 수 없습니다. 학교를 거친 사람들이 사회에 나가고, 가르치는 사람들이 영향을 미치고, 또 가정들이 하나된다면 세계가 한 방향으로 가는 것입니다. 28 앞으로 공산주의 세계의 이론가들과 민주주의 세계의 이론가들과 통일사상가들을 연합해서 국제세미나를 많이 열려고 합니다. 그러려면 미국 정부와 유엔을 여기에 가담시켜야 합니다. 미국 정부 스스로 이 혼란한 시대에 방향성을 설정하게 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 하여 대학연맹을 통해 그 방향대로 추구해 나가게 되면 하나의 주류 사상권에 치리를 받을 수 있는 세계화의 시대로 넘어 간다고 보는 것입니다. 29 내가 계획하는 것은 대학연맹을 만들고 유엔 대학을 설립하는 것입니다. 그것을 위해서는 미국의 아이비리그 대학교 총장들이 밀어야 됩니다. 지금 그런 일을 하고 있습니다. 우리가 교육하는 의미에서 50퍼센트의 학생들을 모으고, 아이비리그 대학들에서 50퍼센트를 뽑아서 유엔 대학을 창설해야 됩니다. 국제적인 인재들을 교육하기 위해 미국에서 시작하지만 교육을 한국에서 하려고 합니다. 그런 것을 실현하려면 방대한 계획을 해야 됩니다. 30 유엔에는 초국가적인 이념은 있지만 그것을 실천할 인맥이 없습니다. 거기에는 자기들 일개국의 이익을 위해서 일하는 사람들만 있지 세계의 이익을 위해 일하는 인맥이 없다는 것입니다. 그것을 내가 편성하기 위해서 브리지포트대학교와 아이비리그 10대 대학들을 엮으려고 합니다. 그래서 세계적인 인재들을 창출해서 유엔을 통하여 전 세계의 지도적 인맥 체제를만들 계획입니다. 31 앞으로는 학교가 필요 없게 됩니다. 영상통신교육시대로 들어가는 것입니다. 내가 그것을 시작하고 있습니다. 세계적인 학자들을 내가 많이 알고 있기 때문에 각 분야의 학자들을 초청해서 영상을 만들기 위한 준비를 하고 있습니다. 지금 우리 워싱턴 텔레비전센터를 중심삼고 하는 것입니다. 지금까지는 문자통신의 사회였지만 이제부터는 영상통신 사회로 바뀌게 됩니다. 32 이제는 모여서 집을 짓고 살 필요가 없게 됩니다. 지금까지는 생활의 편리 문제, 즉 교통수단의 편리 문제, 교육의 편리 문제, 그런 문제들 때문에 모여 살았습니다. 그런데 앞으로는 텔레비전이나 라디오를 가지고 어느 산골짜기에 가서도 살 수 있게 됩니다. 앞으로는 학교가 없어집니다. 전부 영상을 가지고 교육하는 것입니다. 벌써 그런 때가 되었습니다. 국제적인 영상으로 교육하는 것입니다. 그러니 6년씩 공부할 필요가 없습니다. 머리가 좋은 사람은 2년 이내에 졸업할 수도 있습니다. 대학까지도 영상을 통해 공부해서 국가가 공인하는 시험에 통과만 하면 어디에 가든지 공인됩니다. |
| 真の父母経 - 431. 統一神学大学院、ブリッジポート大学と世界大学連盟 真の父母様は、一九七四年四月三十日、アメリカ、ニューヨークのハドソン川の川辺、 ベリータウンにある敷地七万坪(五十八エーカー)のカトリック神学校を引き継ぎ、一九七五年十月二十日にアメリカの統一神学大学院として開校された。そし て、一九八六年十一月二十一日に認可を受け、神学科と神学教育科の修士号課程を新設し、カトリック、プロテスタント、ユダヤ教などから教授たちを招聘し て、超教派大学院として運営された。続いて、一九九二年四月十五日にブリッジポート大学を引き継がれた。アメリカのコネティカット州、ロングアイランド海 峡沿いに位置するブリッジポート大学は、一九二七年に設立された由緒ある大学である。真の父母様は、世界の大学が国家や理念、宗教の壁を飛び越え、人類が 追求する共同価値の実現に当たって先頭に立たなければならないと考えられ、一九九六年一月、ウルグアイのモンテビデオで世界大学連盟の結成を宣言された。 そして、国際的な人材を養成し、国連を通して世界の指導者クラスの人脈ネットワークを構築するため、国連大学の設立を提唱された。また、「これからは、学 校という空間より、誰もがそれぞれの場所で教育を受けられる映像通信教育時代に入るようになる」と語られた。 17 私がベリータウンに神学校を造ったのは、統一教会に神学が必要だからではなく、キリスト教のためです。ですから、ユダヤ教の教授、カトリックの教授、長老 派教会の教授などを連れてきて優待するのです。それゆえ、不思議だというのです。統一教会の「原理」を教えず、干渉もしないで、自分たちの好きなように教 えるようにしているというのです。 18 統一神学大学院がアメリカで有名になっています。アメリカの神学界で問題の神学校として注視しているのです。施設や学究的な実力では、どの大学院にも劣ら ない水準に上がりましたが、政府が政治的な背景を中心としてブレーキをかけています。しかし、アメリカの神学者たちが関与しているので、政府も仕方なく認 可を出さざるを得ない段階に来ています。 19 ベリータウンの神学大学院に対し、一九八六年十一月二十一日に設立認可が下りました。統一神学大学院です。そのために十一年間闘いました。ニューヨーク州 の教育委員会を相手に、行政訴訟を起こしたのです。学校設立の規定に従って、施設から教授と学生たちまで、すべてのものを備えたのに、なぜ認可してくれな いのかというのです。アメリカでは、そのようなことはあり得ません。 訴訟を起こし、私たちが一審で勝ちました。向こうの控訴で二審に進んだのですが、二審でも勝ったというのです。三審まで進みました。ニューヨーク州 の立場からすると、三審でも負ければ国の面子が立たないので、そこで棄却したのです。「ニューヨーク州の教育委員会と統一神学大学院が話し合って、良い方 向に向けて解決しなさい」と言って棄却してしまったのです。それが棄却されてから四年目に認可が下りました。 20 お父様が神学校を建てたのは、アメリカを救うためです。企業体を発展させるために建てたのではありません。現在の神学校は、アメリカを救う能力がありませ ん。今後は、私たちの神学校の出身者たちが、この国に影響を及ぼすでしょう。大学教育もそうです。現在教育しているものでは、アメリカの進路を変えること ができません。再教育ができるのは、私たちしかいません。キリスト教自体が、神様のみ旨を知らないのです。それを知っている人は私たちしかいないので、私 たちが新たに教育しなければなりません。 今までお父様がこの神学校の設立を急いだのは、アメリカを再教育するためです。キリスト教を新たなものにして、新しいアメリカ、新しい自由世界をつくるのです。 21 私は、ブリッジポート大学を引き継ぎました。アメリカで外国人として総合大学を引き継いだ人は、私しかいません。初めてです。これは記録です。ですから、 四方からどれほど反対を受けたか分かりません。あらゆる大学で、「今、レバレンド・ムーンがアメリカの教育分野を占領するのは、未来のアメリカを滅ぼすた めだ」と言って、ありとあらゆるうわさが立ちました。 「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」や「ワシントン・ポスト」などの新聞も、あらを探して非難しました。私はアメリカに来て、悪いことは一つもしていません。夜も昼も、堂々としているというのです。堂々とした男として生きてきました。 22 お父様が生きていく生活の天理、鉄則があります。私は、天の福があれば、福のパイプをつなげてあげようとするので、お父様が苦労した所に祝福があるので す。ブリッジポート大学はコネティカット州にあります。私が入って苦労した刑務所がある州です。そこが祝福を受けたというのです。 ブリッジポート大学を私が引き継かなければその州は不渡りを出すようになっていました。私が困難な学校を引き継ぎ、今や誇らしい都市になりました。 注目の対象になったというのです。その周辺の州の中で、注目の都市になりました。アメリカに対しても、私は「うまくいくように」と祈るのであって、「滅び よ」とは祈りませんでした。苦労した所です。私が手を放して去ったとしても、アメリカは滅びないというのです。 23 学問とは、国境を超越しなければならず、歴史まで超越しなければなりません。そのような観点から、全世界の学者たちが一堂に会して教育をするのですが、民 族の限界線に支配される教育制度を私たちは克服しよう、越えていこうというのです。アメリカであればアメリカのための教育制度、イギリスであればイギリス のための教育制度ではなく、それを超越して、私たちが新たに構想する一つの世界、平和の世界を建設できる教育制度を整えなければなりません。 このような目標を立てておき、そこにふさわしい教育施設を備えなければ、完全な教育をすることができないので、そこにふさわしい大学を造ろうと考えています。それで、国際大学理事連盟をつくろうとしているのです。 24 今後は、誰でも統一教会の責任者になれるのではありません。責任者になろうとすれば、世界が共通に公認する試験過程を経なければなりません。「韓国の郡の 責任者だ」と言えば、アメリカにも郡があるので、その責任者と釣り合う資格を与えるのです。そうすれば、どこに行っても、「あなたは何の責任者ですか」と 聞かれるとき、「郡の責任者です」と言えば、どのレベルかが分かるようになります。言い換えれば、「小学校の教師だ」と言えば、どこに行ってもすべて通じ るのと同じです。そのように制度化しなければなりません。 それで、私がアメリカに行って急いだのが、教育の制度化です。それは、人の数で制度化するのではなく、教育の基盤の上でしなければなりません。ベリータウンで急いだことがそれです。今や、本格的な教育の段階に入るのです。 25 世界的に有名な教授たちと各分科の専門家たちを集めて、新しい百科事典を編纂しなければなりません。今後、各分野で価値基準を中心とした新しい百科事典を 編纂するつもりです。すべての分野で革命を起こすためには、まずその原書となる百科事典を編纂しなければならないというのです。それで、それに該当する全 般的な問題を中心として日刊紙を発刊し、世界の若者たちを教育しようと考えています。 そのためには、連合的な教育機関が必要なので、大学を中心とした連盟を編成しなければなりません。一国の大学をもってしてはできません。大学を連結させて、世界に影響を及ぼすことができる方向性を提示するための準備をしなければならないというのです。 26 一九九六年一月、ウルグアイのビクトリア・プラザ・ホテルで、世界大学連盟の設立を宣言しました。大学連盟を中心として、世界の大学が共同価値の信念を認定する方向に進まなければならないというのです。 国家の権益が問題ではなく、自由が問題ではありません。学問の世界では、人種を超越し、伝統とすべての国境を超越して、実力のある人は、いかなる大 学でも、文化的背景に妨げられず、自由に活動しながら心置きなく実力を発揮できなければなりません。ですから、どんな大学でも訪ねていって教えてあげるこ とができ、影響を及ぼすことができる道を開こうとしているのです。 27 南北米大学連盟を中心として、アジアから南北米とヨーロッパ、アフリカまで連結します。そうして、専門分野を中心として世界的に推戴できる人は誰かを、毎 年評価していくのです。そのようにすることによって、大学が社会を動かす基盤になります。精神的な面、倫理的な面、道徳的な面で基準を立てることができる のが教育です。その教育基盤の上で、神様を教えてあげればよいのです。 ここに言論機関が連結されるのです。そうして、内的、外的に歩調を合わせるようになるときには、世界が違う所に行こうとしても、行くことができません。学校を経た人々が社会に出て、教える人々が影響を及ぼし、また家庭が一つになれば、世界が一つの方向に進むのです。 28 これから、共産主義世界の理論家たちと民主主義世界の理論家たちと統一思想家たちを連合し、国際セミナーをたくさん開こうと考えています。そのためには、 アメリカ政府と国連をここに加担させなければなりません。アメリカ政府が自ら、この混乱した時代に方向性を設定できるようにするのです。そのようにして、 大学連盟を通し、その方向どおりに追求していくようになれば、一つの主流思想圏に統治される世界となる時代に越えていくと考えるのです。 29 私が計画するのは、大学連盟をつくり、国連大学を設立することです。そのためには、アメリカのアイビーリーグの大学総長たちが推薦しなければなりません。 今、そのようなことをしています。私たちが教育するという意味で、五〇パーセントの学生たちを集め、アイビーリーグの大学から五〇パーセントを引き抜い て、国連大学を創設しなければなりません。国際的な人材を教育するために、アメリカから始めますが、教育は韓国でしようと思います。そのようなことを実現 しようとすれば、膨大な計画を立てなければなりません。 30 国連には超国家的な理念がありますが、それを実践する人脈がありません。そこには、自国の利益のために働く人々ばかりがいるのであって、世界の利益のため に働く人がいないというのです。それを私が編成するために、ブリッジポート大学とアイビーリーグの十大大学をまとめようと考えています。そうして、世界的 な人材を創出し、国連を通して全世界の指導的人脈体制をつくる計画です。 31 今後は学校が必要なくなります。映像通信教育時代に入るのです。私がそれを始めています。世界的な学者たちを私がたくさん知っているので、各分野の学者た ちを招請し、映像を作るための準備をしています。今、私たちの「ワシントン・テレビジョンセンター」を中心として行っているのです。今までは文字通信の社 会でしたが、これからは映像通信の社会に変わるのです。 32 これからは、家を造り、そこに集まって暮らす必要がなくなります。今までは生活の利便性の問題、すなわち交通手段の利便性の問題、教育の利便性の問題、そ のような問題のゆえに集まって暮らしました。ところが、これからはテレビやラジオを持って、どこの谷間に行っても暮らせるようになります。今後は学校がな くなります。すべて映像で教育するのです。既に、そのような時になりました。 国際的な管理体制のもとで、小学校課程を映像で教育するのです。ですから、六年ずつ勉強する必要がありません。頭の良い人は、二年以内に卒業することもできます。大学までも、映像を通して勉強し、国家が公認する試験にパスさえすれば、どこに行っても公認されるのです。 |

The United States and other nations On April 30, 1974, True Parents acquired the campus of a Catholic high school at Barrytown, New York, comprising buildings and 256 acres of land on the Hudson River. On October 20, 1975, the Unification Theological Seminary in the United States was opened. On November 21, 1986, the seminary gained New York State approval for a masters degree program in religious education. An interfaith faculty consisting of Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Jewish as well as Unificationist professors have taught at the seminary. Subsequently, on April 15, 1992 True Parents assumed the operation of the University of Bridgeport. The university, which was originally established in 1927 on the Long Island Sound in Connecticut, has an extensive history. In January 1996, True Parents proclaimed the establishment of the World University Federation in Montevideo, Uruguay, with the belief that universities need to lead the way to realize the common values of humankind, which transcend nations, ideologies and religions. In the proclamation, True Parents proposed the founding of a United Nations University in order to educate talented international individuals and establish a worldwide network of international leaders through the United Nations. They also declared that we are entering the era when people can learn through educational videos in their own location anywhere in the world, rather than traveling to school to study. 17 I did not establish the theological seminary in Barrytown because the Unification Church needs theology, but in order to connect to the established religions. Therefore, we invited a Jewish professor, a Roman Catholic professor, a Baptist professor, and so on, to join the faculty, and we gave them special treatment. Doing so probably appeared strange. I did not teach them the principles of the Unification Church or interfere with their teaching; I allowed them to teach as they wished. (093-162, 1977/05/22) 18 The Unification Theological Seminary in America is becoming famous. Currently, it is being closely observed as an issue in American theological circles. Its facilities and academic competence are at a level equivalent to any other graduate school. Despite that, the government is bowing to pressure and putting on the brakes. And yet, because American theologians are participating, the government has no choice but to grant us a charter. (147-010, 1986/08/20) 19 The seminary in Barrytown obtained its state charter as a graduate school of theology on November 21, 1986. It is the Unification Theological Seminary. We fought for 11 years to gain that charter. We were involved in administrative litigation against the New York State Department of Education. The facilities, faculty and students were in compliance with state standards, and we asked why we had not been granted accreditation. In America, there are no legal grounds to withhold it. We filed a lawsuit and won in the first trial. The opposing side appealed the decision, but they lost the second trial as well. It appears that the New York State Department of Education considered initiating a third trial, but decided that if we won another trial, it would embarrass the state, so they conceded. The court ruled that The New York State Department of Education and the Unification Theological Seminary should consult with each other and arrive at a positive settlement. We finally obtained the charter for the seminary four years later. (149-262, 1986/11/23) 20 I established the theological seminary for the purpose of saving America. It was not founded as a business venture. Contemporary theological seminaries are not capable of saving America. In the future, our seminary graduates will exert influence on this country and on university education. Current educational institutions cannot change Americas path. No one, except for us, can offer new education. Christianity alone does not encompass the Will of God. Because we do, we need to be responsible to renew the content of theo logical education. I have hurried to establish this theological seminary for the purpose of educating America. Through re-creating Christianity, we can realize a new America and a new free world. (216-045, 1991/03/09) 21 I took responsibility for the University of Bridgeport. I am the only foreigner in America who came forward to preserve and protect a university. I am the first one. I set this record, but you do not know how much opposition I experienced from every direction. Various rumors proliferated. University towns began to say that Reverend Moon was taking over American education and would ruin Americas future. The New York Times, The Washington Post and other major newspapers slandered me, accusing me of committing all kinds of wrongdoing. After I came to America, however, I did not engage in even one instance of wrongdoing. By day and by night, I have stood tall. I have always lived as a man of integrity. (282-122, 1997/03/11) 22 I obey heavenly laws and ironclad rules in the course of my life. Because I am trying to connect you to the pipeline of Heavens blessings, you should know that there are blessings in the place where I have suffered. The University of Bridgeport is in the state of Connecticut. This is the same state where I went to prison, so it is a state where I have suffered. Now it is receiving blessings. If I had not sustained the University of Bridgeport, the state would have been dishonored. But, since I rescued a school that was struggling, Bridgeport now has become a proud city and the focus of attention. Bridgeport attracted the attention of the surrounding states. Even now, I am praying that America will do well. I never prayed for its ruin, even though it is a place where I went through hardships. Even if I leave America now, it will not perish. (383-222, 2002/06/28) 23 Academic studies must transcend national borders and even historical backgrounds. From such a perspective, the scholars of the world must unite and strive to overcome the cultural divisions that plague education. We are not talking about an educational system only fit for the United States, England or any other specific nation. Transcending the national level, we need to create a global educational system that can build a unified world of peace. Without setting a goal and establishing proper facilities for this purpose, we cannot provide world-level education. That is why I am planning to build a university suitable for such a project. Therefore, I am planning to establish a board of directors for a world university federation. (071-176, 1974/04/30) 24 In the future, not just anyone will be able to be a leader in the Unification Church. If you want to take a position of responsibility, you will have to gain approval through an examination process, just as is commonly practiced throughout the world. Then, if you are the national leader in Korea, you would be qualified for a leadership position at the same level in the United States. Once you have achieved that position, when you are asked, "What kind of responsibility do you hold?" you would reply, "I am in charge of a county," and that would clarify your rank wherever you are. As an elementary school teacher is accorded the same status wherever he or she goes, we need to institutionalize similarly. Therefore, when I went to America, I hastened to systematize our education. Such a process does not require large numbers of people, but it needs to be done based on an educational foundation. In Barry-town, we were in a rush to do that. Such a system is now being realized as we enter the phase of full-scale education. (075-091, 1975/01/02) 25 We need to compile a new encyclopedia, mobilizing world-renowned scholars and experts from every field. It will be compiled according to the value standards of each field. In order to revolutionize all fields, we need to first compile the original encyclopedia. We have to publish a daily newspaper, discussing key issues related to all fields of life, and educate the young people of the world. For that purpose, we need to create an integrated educational institution and that is why we need a federation. Universities in one nation alone cannot accomplish this. We need to tie universities together and make preparations to propose a direction that can influence the world. (110-196, 1980/11/17) 26 In January 1996,1 proclaimed the establishment of the World University Federation at the Victoria Hotel in Uruguay. The universities of the world need to acknowledge common values under the leadership of the World University Federation. National interests and academic freedom are not the matters of greatest concern. In the world of academics, all capable students at any college should be able to carry out activities and demonstrate their abilities freely without any restrictions on their cultural background, thereby transcending race, traditions and nationalities. That is why now I am opening the path where you can go to any university to teach and be influential. (276-289, 1996/03/03) 27 North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Africa can all connect through the work of the World University Federation in North and South America. With this in place, we can determine the global champion in each field of expertise once a year. In this way, universities will become a basis for moving society forward. It is education that can set the standard in spirituality, ethics and morality. Based on that foundation of education, one can teach about God. The media organizations can also make a connection with this foundation. Once all educational and media organizations align with one another internally and externally, the world will not be able to deviate even if it wants to. When people who finish school go out into society, teachers become influential and families unite, then the world will move in one harmonious direction. (276-291, 1996/03/03) 28 In the future, I am planning to hold many international seminars, inviting communist and democratic theorists and experts in Unification Thought. To reach this goal, we need the participation of the American government and the United Nations. This will enable the American government to figure out its direction in this confused era. That is to say, if America and the United Nations pursue the direction of the World University Federation, I envision an age of globalization that can be governed by the sphere of philosophy. (352-124, 2001/08/29) 29 My plan is to form a world university federation as well as to establish a United Nations university. In order to do this, we need the support of the presidents of Ivy League universities. We are currently engaged in these university projects. Before we can establish a United Nations university, we need to find a way to gather 50 percent of the students, and the Ivy League universities need to recruit the other 50 percent. Although I must start educating international people of talent in America, I would also like to provide such education in Korea. This project will require us to devise an enormous plan. (263-293, 1994/10/27) 30 There is an international vision at the heart of the United Nations, but there is no substantial network to put it into practice. The representatives who appear at the United Nations render service to profit only their own nations. A network to benefit the whole world does not yet exist. In order to organize such a network, I intend to tie the University of Bridgeport together with ten Ivy League universities. In this way, I plan to raise international people of talent and implement a global network through the United Nations. (252-285, 1994/01/01) 31 In the future, there will be no need for schools. We are entering the age of electronic education through video. I am initiating such a project. Since I know many world scholars, we are making preparations to invite experts in each field to tape their classes. We are doing so at our television studios in Washington. Our society has hitherto communicated through writing, but it will now be transformed into one that communicates through images. (209-316, 1990/11/30) 32 There is no longer any need to build high-density urban housing. Until now, we were compelled to live crowded together because of convenience, means of transportation, education and other such issues. In the future however, by having a television or a radio, human beings can live in the hills and valleys wherever they desire. In the future, we will not have school buildings. Education will be done entirely through videos. We are already living in that age. We can build an international system by which elementary school classes can be taught through video. There would be no need to attend school for six years; smart children could even graduate within two years. A person could study all the way to the university level through videos.
