Commenting on Lee Dong Hyun’s Alternative Farming Venture
Casper H. Claassen (2013/06/13)
Lee Dong Hyun’s (이동현) brand of alternative farming centers on the growing of germinated brown rice in an eco-friendly manner – a brand of organic farming – and is clearly preferable to farming based on the extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. It certainly highlights that our obsession with increasing production at the cost of human health is unsustainable. Indeed, he is quite innovative in avoiding this obsession and still running a profitable business, with, for instance, vinegar, enzymes, and even snails being used in the cultivation process of his rice.
His company, Misilran (미실란) – an agribusiness – has done a great job in selling various types of brown rice cultivated in this manner, as a cursory glance at their website would reveal. The fact that his company is profitable highlights the fact that nature can be used in innovative ways to provide communities with food, without greatly harming the environment; and, furthermore, highlights the growing desire for healthy food, with healthy food underpinning a healthy community and a healthy producer-consumer relationship. Such ventures might go a long way in changing the image of agribusiness, and perhaps attract more youth to the agriculture industry.
