주관적인 해석을 해 보자면,
일단 이 노래의 화자는 포경선에 탄 선원들이 아닌 선원들의 이야기를 들려주는 제 3자라는걸 노래에서 알 수 있죠. 전제로 두고 해석해야 합니다.
Billy of Tea라는 포경선이 고래를 잡으러 바다로 나갔는데 운 좋게도 2주도 안되서 참고래를 발견하였습니다(원래는 몇달 걸려서 고래 하나 못 보는 경우도 허다). 그래서 선원들은 작살을 들고 잡으려 했으나 고래에 작살만 고정시키고 고래는 심해로 내려가버려서 고래가 움직임에 따라 배도 같이 끌려다니게 되어버렸죠.
그 후 약 40일동안 고래에 끌려다니고 그 사이에 줄 한번 다시 묶은거 뺴면 고래잡이에 진전이 없었으며 엎친데 덮친격으로 그 사이에 같이 항해하던 배중 4척만이 남아버렸습니다. 이 후 화자가 아직도 선원들은 고래에 끌려다니며 고래잡이를 하고 있다고 말하는 가사를 보면 결국 선장과 선원들은 고래는 못 잡은채 보급선을 기다리다 모두 바다 위에서 죽은것 으로 볼 수 있습니다.
그래서 계속 "언젠가 고래 손질이 끝나는 그날 우린 작별을 고하고 떠나리라" 라는 가사가 있다고 해석 할 수 있죠.
