땅위의 모든 것은 각기 때와 계절이 있느니라. -- 전도서 3:1
성숙에는 지름길이 없다. 우리가 자라서 성인이 되기까지는 여러 해가 걸리며
과일이 커서 익을 때 까지는 꼬박 한 계절이 걸린다. 그리스도의 성품을 개발하기
위해는 서둘러서 안된다. 영적인 열매도 육체와 마찬가지로 시간이 걸린다.
과일을 빨리 익게 하려 하면 맛을 잃게 된다. 미국에서는 보통 토마토를
안 익었을 때 따는데 상점에 까지 가는 동안 멍이 들지 않게 하기 위해서다.
그리고는 팔기 전에 파란 토마토에 즉시 빨갛게 되도록 탄산가스를 뿌린다.
가스를 뿌린 토마토는 먹을 수는 있지만 밭에서 천천히 익은 토마토와
맛을 비교할 수는 없다.
우리는 얼마는 빨리 크느냐를 걱정하지만 하나님은 우리가 얼마나
건실하게 성장 하느냐에 관심을 두신다. 하나님은 영원한 곳으로
부터 영원토록 우리를 바라보고 계시므로 절대 서두르지 않으신다.
Lane Adams는 영적 성장 과정을 연합군이 2차 세계대전 당시 남태평양의
섬들을 해방시킬 때의 작전과 비교했다. 첫째, 해안에서 떨어진 배에서 섬에
있는 적의 거점에 포를 쏘아 저항을 약화시킨다. 다음에 소수의 해병대가
침공을 하여 섬에 근거를 마련할 수 있는조그만 교두보를 확보한다.
교두보가 확보되면 한 번에 하나 씩 나머지 섬을 해방시키는 긴 공정을
시작하는 것이다. 마침내는 섬 전체을 장악하는 것인데 이 전투는
꽤 큰 대가를 치루지 않을 수가 없다.
Adams는 이런 비유를 했다. 그리스도는 우리가 믿음을 받아드릴 적에
우리가 풀 수 없는 문제로 우리를 포격 하기도 하신다. 처음 그가 문을
두드릴 때 어떤 사람은 자기의 삶을 열어 보이지만 대부분은 저항하고
방어한다. 우리가 받아 들이기 전의 경험으로 보면 예수님이, "보라
내가 문앞에 섰으니 깨뜨릴 것이다"라고 말씀 하신다.
제자도는 그리스도에 맟추어 가는 과정이다. "우리가 진정으로
완숙에 도달 함이 '그리스도의 충만"을 뜻하는 성장의 척도"가
된다고 성경은 말한다. 예수님과 닮는 것이 당신의 마지막
도착점이더라도 당신의 여행은 일생 내내 계속 될 것이다.
Everything on earth has its own time and its own season. - Ecclesiastes 3:1
There are no shorcuts to maurity. It takes years for us to grow to adulthood, and
it takes a full season for fruit to mature and ripen. The same is true for the fruit
of the Spirit. The development of Christlike character cannot be rushed.
Spiritual growth, like physical growth, takes time.
When you try to ripen fruit quickly, it loses its flavor. In America, tomatoes are
usually picked unripened so they won't bruise during shipping to the stores.
Then, before they are sold, these green tomatoes are sprayed with CO2 gas
to turn them red instantly. Gassed tomatoes are eidble, but they are no match
to the flavor of a vine-ripened tomato that is allowed to mature slowly.
While we worry about how fast we grow, God is concerned about how strong
we grow. God views our lives from and for eternity, so he is never in a hurry.
Lane Adams once compared the process of spiritual growth to the strategy the Allies
used in World War II to liberate islands in the South Pacific. First they would
"soften up" an island, weakening the resistance by shelling the enemy strongholds
with bombs from offshore ships. Next, a small group of Marines would invade the island
and establish a "beachhead -- a tiny fragment of the island that they could control.
Once the beahhead was secured, they would begin the long process liberating
the rest of the island, one bit of territory at a time. Eventually the entire island would
be brought under control, but not without some costly battles.
Adams drew this parallel: Before Christ invades our lives at conversion, he sometimes
has to "soften us up" by allowing problems we can't handle. While some open their
lives to Christ the first time he knocks on the door, most of us are resistant and
defensive. Our pre-conversion experience is Jesus saying, "Behold I
stand at the door and bomb!"
The discipleship is the process of conforming to Christ. The Bible says, "We arrive
at real maturity -- that measure of development which is meant by 'the fullness
of Christ.'" Christlikeness is your eventual destination, but your journey will last a lifetime.
