최상급의 용법
(1) 셋 이상 중에서 가장 나은 것을 나타내는 데에는 「the+최상급」을 쓴다.
He is the tallest boy in his class.(그는 그의 반에서 가장 키가 큰 소년이다.)
(2) 최상급은 때로는 even(∼조차도)의 의미를 나타내기도 한다.
The cleverest boy in the class could not answer it.
(반에서 가장 영리한 소년조차도 그것에 대답할 수 없었다.)
'가장 영리한 소년이라는 사실'과 '그것에 답할 수 없다'라는 사실이 상충된다.
(3) 최상급이라 하더라도 다른 명사와 비교한 것이 아니라 자체 명사 가운데서 최상급이면 the를 생략한다.
The river is deepest here.(그 강은 여기가 가장 깊다.)
(4) 형용사 최상급의 의미의 내용은 다음과 같은 원급과 비교급을 써서 문장전환이 될 수 있다.
The Mississippi is the longest river in the world.
(Mississippi 강은 세계에서 가장 긴 강이다.)
The Mississippi is the longest of all the rivers in the world.
(Mississippi 강은 세계에 있는 모든 강 중에서 가장 길다.)
The Mississippi is longer than any other river in the world.
(Mississippi 강은 세계에 있는 다른 어떤 강보다 더 길다.)
None Mississippi is longer than all the other rivers in the world.
(Mississippi 강은 세계에 있는 다른 어떤 강보다 더 길다.)
No (other) river in the world is longer than the Mississippi.
(세계에 있는 다른 어떤 강도 Mississippi 강처럼 그렇게 길지는 않다.)
I have never seen such a tall man as he.
=I have never seen so tall a man as he.
=I have never seen a taller man than he.
=He is the tallest man that I have ever seen.
(나는 그 사람처럼 그렇게 키 큰 사람은 본 적이 없다.)
He is as brave a soldier as ever shouldered a rifle.
=He is the bravest soldier that ever shouldered a rifle.
=He is as brave a soldier as any other.
=He is as brave a soldier as any.
(그는 지금까지 어깨에 소총을 메었던 군인 중에서 가장 용감한 군인이다.)
(5) most, a most, the most의 용법
① most = (the great majority of∼) 「대개의」
Most young men are fond of outdoor sports.(most + 명사)
(대부분의 청년들은 옥의 스포츠를 즐긴다.)
② a most = (very, extremely) 「매우∼한」
She is a most (=very) charming girl. (a most + 형용사)
(그녀는 매우 매력적인 소녀이다.)
③ She is most attractive girl. (most + 형용사)
(그녀는 매우 매력적인 소녀이다.)
④ the most = (최상급) 「가장∼한」
He is the most famous of all Korean dramatists. (the most + 형용사)
(그는 한국 극작가 중 가장 유명한 사람이다.)
