- 문법을 기술하는 데 있어서 각 어휘가 속하는 부류에 대한 명칭이 필요한데. 이를 품사(parts of speech)라 한다. 각 부류에 대한 정확하고 철저한 정의를 내리기는 현실적으로 불가능하지만, 분류 방식에 대해 이의를 제기하지는 않는다. 각 품사에 대한 정의를 내리는 것보다는 단어를 예시하는 것이 더 이해하기가 쉽다.
- 명사(noun, 또는 실사 substantive)
- 생명체(living things, plants): God, devil, man, John, American, friend, thief, army, animal, cat, plant, rose
- 사물(things): star, stone, mountain, house, room, road, book, picture, nose
- 물질(substances): iron, air, water, taea, food, linen
- 사건, 행위, 상태(happenings, acts, states): lightning, galke, war, fight, walk, death, play, sleep, laughter
- 단위(measures, indications of quantity): year, month, hour, inch, mile, pound, handful, shilling
물론 어떤 단어는 두 기준을 충족시킬 수도 있다. 예를 들어 rain은 물질을 나타내고, 때로는 사건을 사타내기도 한다. 또한 이 기준이 모두 적용될 수 있는 것도 아니다. 예를 들어 time, space, form, cause 등은 위의 어떤 기준에 따라 명사가 되는지 말하기 어렵다.
- 형용사(adjective)
형용사는 성질을 나타내는 성상사(qualifier)와 수량을 나타내는 수량사(quantifier)로 나뉜다. 실사는 여러 성질을 가지고 있으며, 형용사는 어떤 개체를 찾아 내도록 하는 역할을 한다. - 성상사(qualifier): beautiful, healthy, kind, long, fast, balck, clean, American
- 수량사(quantifier): numerous, many, few, much
- 동작(activity): go, take, fight, surprise, eat, breathe, speak, walk, call
- 상태(state): sleep, remain, wait, live, suffer
- 과정(process): become, grow, lose, die, dry
- 인칭대명사(personal pronouns): my, your, his, her, its
- 지시대명사(demonstrative pronouns): this, that, same, such, the
- 의문대명사(interrogative pronouns): who, what, which
- 관계대명사(relatvie pronouns): who, what, which
- 부정대명사(indefinite pronouns): one, some, any, either, all, both, every, each, none, neither, a
- 불변화사(particles)
부사: well, fast, long, recently, yesterday, not
전치사: at, in, through, for, of
접속사: and, or, but, nor, that, if, unless, because
- 불변화사는 경우에 따라 부사, 전치사, 접속사로 쓰인다.
They have lived happily ever since.(부사)
They have lived happily ever since their marriage (전치사)
They have lived happily since they were married.(접속사)
