한국에 대한 개략적인 소개

how have you been? I want you to know your letter keeps me very happy. You asked about Korea. OK, I'll tell you a little about my country. As you know, North and South Korea are artificially divided by a de-militarized zone, at roughly the 38th parallel. The population of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) is over 42 million. Korea is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, denser than both India and Japan. We speak Korean which is called "Han-gul" (Korean Alphabet). Have you heard of it before? Many years ago, Chinese characters or letters were used by all Korean scholars. But in 1446 King Sejong invented Han-gul, so that "all" koreans could learn to read and write. It is a very scientific and easy to learn system. If you want to learn Han-gul, I would be happy to help you.

Thanks for your letter. I thought you might be interested in Korean folklore, so I'll tell you this story. Long long ago, a king from heaven sent his son Hwanung to earth. There, he met a bear and a tiger, and each wanted to become a human being. So he told them that if they did not come out of the cave, and ate only garlic and wormwood for one hundred days, then they would become mortal. The tiger gave up, but the bear obeyed Hwanung and became a woman. Eventually, Hwanung and the bear who turned into a woman, married and had a son, Tan-gun, became the first Korean leader. Even now, the people of Korea celebrate Tan-gun's birthday, calling it "sky-opening day". If you have any interesting folklore in your country, please let me know. I better go now.

종교에 대해

Hi,
I hope you don't mind my asking, but what religion are you? The reason I'm asking, is because I'd like to tell you about the religions of Korea. These days, a lot of people are Christian and the largest congregation in the world is in Seoul. But until recently, the majority of our country believed in Buddhism. The people's belief in Buddha, not only caused the country to unite, but also helped to give us more patience when approaching problems that seemed unsolvable. And the small temples that are hidden away in the most beautiful parts of the mountains are so calm, tranquil and refreshing that even people who are not Buddhists, go there to forget about the stress of everyday city life. I'm Christian, but I'm still amazed at how much Buddhism has affected Koran culture. Please tell me a bit about your religion next time. I'm really interested.

미국으로의 초대

미국 방문 계획

Dear Ann,
I have very shocking news that will surprise you. My family is making plans to visit the U.S. for summer vacation. My uncle lives in the U.S. and the great thing is that my uncle's house is very close to your house. I'll stay for about 20 days in the U.S. Isn't it exciting? Finally we have a chance to meet!!! And if you have enough time, you can show me some of your favorite spots.
It's my first time to go abroad, so I'm very nervous and excited. Especially, about the thought of seeing you. From now on, I'll study English very hard in order to talk freely with you.
There are many places where I want to go. I want to see movie stars in Hollywood, take a walk among the skyscrapers in New York City, play all day at Disneyland, and tour the Grand canyon. But, the U.S is so big that I can't do all of them. There is still a month to go before we leave. I can't wait. Until I get there, tell me more about the U.S. and you know, any fun things that are happening in your life.

한국 음식에 대해

It's Geun-hye again. I'll tell you a little about our food. Korean food can be either very delicious or leave you with a feeling that you may not want to experience it again.
Korean food ranges in taste from bland to extremely spicy, as many of the dishes are seasoned with red pepper. Koreans eat 'Bop'(rice steamed plainly or with other grains) as a staple, but it tastes so bland that we eat 'Kuk'(soup), 'Kimchi' and other 'Banchan'(side dishes) also. Kimchi is an essential part of the Korean meal and it is a fermented food. Basically it is made up of cabbages(Chinese cabbage) seasoned with red pepper powder, salt, garlic, ginger and a few other ingredients. (Recently Japanese Kimuchi was introduced to other countries, but Korean KIMCHI is the 'ORIGINAL'). Kuk is soup. A very popular type of Kuk is called 'Taenjang kuk' and is made up of 'Taenjang'(soybean paste), tofu(or bean curd), various vegetables and sometimes meat is included. A popular Bachan dish is called 'Pulgogi'. It is seasoned strips of beef (or pork) that is roasted. Westerners like it very much.
From what I told you, how do you feel about Korean food? If the chance permits, I want to treat you to some Korean Food. Take care.

이번엔 한국 음식에 대해 이야기 할까 해. 한국음식은 아주 깜짝 놀랄 만한 가쁨을 줄수도 아님, 다시는 맛보고 싶지 않은 느낌을 줄 수도 있을 거야.
너도 알다시피 한국 음식은 밋밋한 것에서 고추로 양념된 아주 매운 것까지 다양하다.
한국사람들은 밥(쌀이나 다른 곡물을 익힌 것)을 주식으로 먹는데 맛이 밋밋하기 때문에 국이나 반찬을 함께 먹는다. 김치는 한국 음식의 진수이자 발효음식이다. 기본적으로 고추가루, 소금, 마늘, 생강과 다른 재로들로 양념된 배추로 만들어.(최근에 일본의 기무치가 해외에 소개 되고 있지만 한국의 김치가 원조라는 사실을 잊지 말기를..)
국은 스프 같은 거야. 제일 유명한 국이 된장국인데 된장, 두부, 다른 야채들을 넣고 끓이는 거야. 경우에 따라서는 고기를 넣기도 해.
다른 반찬으로 불고기가 있다. 불고기는 쇠고기나 돼지고기를 양념한 뒤에 굽는 거야. 서양인들도 매우 좋아하단다.
한국 음식에 대해 어떤 생각이 드는지 궁금하구나. 기회가 된다면 너에게 한국음식을 대접하고 싶어.

한국의 결혼

Dear Hannah,
yesterday I was so happy, but on the other hand so sad. What am I talking about? It was my sister's wedding day!!! In korea , Marriage means the start of a new family and leaving your parents... so I will hardly see my sister anymore. I will now talk about Korean wedding ceremonies. We have two types of wedding ceremonies, "common" and "traditional".
A Traditional ceremony is very different from the common one. The Bride and Groom wear Han-Bok (Korean traditional clothes). The wedding ceremony usually takes place in the Groom's house. The Bride and Groom stand face to face , but between them there is a table on which many kinds of foods are placed. The couple participates in some simple rituals. After this, everyone goes to the Groom's house and all the neighbours are invited. Then we have a magnificent feast. All the people are very happy and wish the couple all the best. If I get married, I'll invite you to Korea for the wedding. Bye for now.........

어제 나는 매우 기쁘기도 하고 슬프기도 한 날이 었단다,
무슨 소리 하는 거냐구?
어제는 우리 언니의 결혼하는 날 이었거든. 한국에서는 결혼은 새로운 가정을 꾸림과 동시에 가족을 떠나는 것을 의미 하거든,,, 이제 난 우리 언니를 잘 볼 수 없게 되지...
오늘은 너에게 우리나라 전통혼례에 대해서 말해 줄까해.,
한국에는 두가지 방식의 결혼이 있단다. 하나는 너도 잘 아는 서양 식이고, 또 다른 방식은 전통식이지.
전통 혼례는 일반적인 결혼식과는 아주 다르단다. 신랑 신부는 한복을 입지, 그리고 결혼식은 신부의 집에서 열린단다.
신랑 신부는 음식이 가득 차려진 상을 사이에 두고 마주선단다 . 그리고는 간단한 의식을 치르지.
그것이 끝나면 신부의 집은 파티장이 된단다. 온 이웃들과 함께 맛있는 음식도 먹지. 그날엔 마을사람들 모두가 행복하단다. 마을 사람들은 그 부부가 영원히 행복하게 살기를 기원한단다.
내가커서 결혼하게 되면 너를 꼭 한국으로 초대해 줄께..

한국의 전통 놀이

Dear sam,
Happy new year !!! At last the 21st century is here!!! What did you do to celebrate it's arrival? In Korea , New Year's Day is the most important day of the year. On this day, all our families get together. In the morning, families wear Han-Bok (Korean traditional clothes) and have an ancestor-memorial service. We pray for peace for our forefathers and eat Duk-gook(rice cake soup). After that, we wish everyone that we meet Happy New Year.
We also play many fantastic games. Do you know "Yoot"? In "yoot", we use four sticks that are rounded on one side and flat on the other . We throw them up into the air and when they land we advance accordingly. The teams move a marker around a board and the first team to finish wins. Nul Ddwee Gee is another fun game. This is a Korean see-saw game. It is very popular among women. A woman stands at each end and one of them jumps into the air and lands on the board which sends the other person flying into the air.

Boys enjoy flying kites that they have made out of sticks and paper. Traditionally, people would write "Away evil, come blessings" on their kites and release them believing that all the bad luck would fly away with the kite. Next New

드디어 21세기가 다가 왔단다., 새해 첫날 넌 뭘 했니?
한국에서는 설날은 일년 중 가장 중요한 행사일이지..
그날엔 온가족이 모여, 한복을 입고 , 조상님께 차례를 드린단다. 그리고는 떡국을 함께 먹으며 덕담을 나누지.
그날 우리는 즐거운 놀이를 한단다,
너 윷놀이 아니? 윷 놀이 할때 우리는 4개의 막대기를 이용하지. 둥그런면과 납작한면으로 구분해서 그것을 던저 나오는 결과에 따라 앞으로 나아갈 수 있단다. 한바퀴를 가장 먼저 도는 팀이 이기는 놀이지
널뛰기 또한 정말 재미있는 놀이란다. 이건 시소와 비슷 하게 생기긴 했지만 좀 다르단다. 두명의 여자가 양쪽 끝에 서지 , 그리고 나서 한명이 공중으로 뛰어올랐다가 떨어지면서 반대편에 있는 다른 사람을 공중으로 뛰어 보내는 거지.
널 뛰기는 여자아이들이 많이 하고 연 날리기는 남자 아이들이 주로 하지. 그들은 4개의 막대기와 종이로 연을 직접만든단다.
전통적으로 , 연에다가 '불운은 가고 행운만 오너라' 라고 쓰고 그것을 날려 보낸단다,. 그리고 나쁜 기운이 모두 연과 함께 날라 갈것이아고 믿지.
내년 새해 첫날에는 가족들과 함께 이런 놀이들을 해보렴, 그러면 한국의 놀이들이 얼마나 재미 있는지 알수 있을 꺼야..

how are you doing? I'm so happy because a few hours ago on TV, I saw many foreigners learning 'Taekwondo' (our traditional sport). Let me tell you more about it.
A few years ago, "Taekwondo' was recognized as being a truly universal sport. So, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 'Taekwondo' will be initiated as a regular sport.
Taekwondo is a kind of Korean martial art using both hands and feet.It has a long history in Korea and is about 2,000 years old. Basic movements in Taekwondo are thrusting and kicking. In order to learn it, you need fortitude and a strong body. If you have time , you should try to learn it. It will make you strong and increase your self- confidence. At first you wear a white belt (lowest rank) and your rank is indicated by the color of belt you wear. As you practice and get better, you can eventually earn a black belt and with this belt you can enter competitions. I want to learn Taekwondo. 앤디야 안녕 ? 요즘 어떻게 지내니?
나는 지금매우 기쁘단단, 조금전에 TV에서 외국사람들이 우리나라 태권도를 많이배우고 있는 모습을 보았거든,
오늘은 그런의미에서 태권도를 소개해 주고 싶어.
몇년전 태권도가 세계적인 스포츠로 인정을 받았단다. 그래서 2000년 시드니 올림픽에서는 정식 종목으로 채택되었지.
태권도는 손과 발을 이용한 전통 무술의 일종이란다. 즉 고대사람들의 전투에서 유래 되었지, 그러니까 2000년의 역사를 지닌 스포츠란 말이지.
기본적인 동작은 찌르기와 차기야. 그것들을 배우기 위해서는 인내심과 강한 체력을 필요로 하지. 만약에 시간있으면 너도 한번 배워 보렴, 태권도는 너를 튼튼하고 자신감있는 사람으로 만들어 줄꺼란다.
처음에는 흰띠를 맨단다. 띠 색깔은 그사람의 실력을 나타내 주거든. 니가 열심히 연습하면 선수들이 매는 검은 띠 도 얻을 수 있게 된단다.
나도 곧 태권도를 배워볼 생각이란다. 열심히 연습해서 우리가 만났을때 멋있는 모습 보여 줄께...

학교 행사에 대하여

Hi Ricky,
I'd like to tell you about my school. It is about a 15 minute walk from my house. We have summer, winter and spring vacations. I like the summer one best because I can go swimming, fishing, hiking and so on. We have two terms, one begins in March and the other in September. We also have an exhibition and sports festival in October which is lots of fun. All of the students go on school excursions in spring and autumn and the 2nd grade students go on an educational tour for 3 days. Next month is the anniversary of the founding of our school, so we don't have to go to school that day. I think I will go on a picnic and tell you about it next time. Bye for now........

안녕, Ricky.
오늘은 우리 학교에 대해 말해주려고 해. 우리 학교는 집에서 걸어서 15분 거리에 있어. 여름, 겨울, 봄방학이 있는데 나는 여름 방학을 제일 좋아해. 수영이랑 낚시랑 등산 같은 것들을 할 수 있거든.
두 학기가 있는데 한 학기는 3월에 시작하고 다음 학기는 9월에 시작해. 거기다가 10월에는 전시회도 열고 체육대회도 열어, 아주 재미있단다.
모든 학생들은 봄이랑 가을에 소풍을 가는데 특별히 2학년 학생들은 3일간 수학여행을 가.
다음달에는 우리 학교 개교기념일이 있어서 그 날엔 학교에 가지 않아도 돼. 난 그 날 소풍 갈 거야. 다음 편지에 그 날 일을 말해줄게. 안녕.

Hi Susan,
I'm sorry for being so late. I was so busy preparing for the final exams. They lasted for 4 days and I am very tired. You may want to ask me about the results, but unfortunately I think that I did terrible. I used to be an above average student, but this time I can't be sure. I was so depressed that my mom had to console me. I feel much better now. I will try do better next year during the midterms.
Susan, what is your favorite subject? I like Math because it's so exciting to solve difficult problems. I don't like social studies much. Can you tell me a little about your test results? I'll be waiting.

How is it going? I spent all day studying. I want to be a teacher. I think it would be very interesting to teach students. But I have to study hard in order to be one. 한국에서 주의할 점

Dear Ann,
I received your letter and it was very interesting to read about your customs. I realized that there were many differences between our culture and yours, especially in expression‎!s of affection. In korea when we meet someone, we don't kiss each other in public. Until recently, we bowed to each other, but these days many Koreans shake hands. It is considered impolite to show affection openly between the sexes. If you walk down the street in Korea, you will see many people of the same sex holding hands or putting their arms around each other's shoulders. This is very common and is a way of showing friendship between them. Many foreigners can easily misunderstand this behavior if they don't know about our customs. There are many things you might be interested in learning about our culture. Eating Korean food, buying gifts, the rules of etiquette in interacting with elderly people, and so on. I'll tell you more about them in the next letter. I wish you much happiness.

Dear Pole,
I'm really sorry that you broke your leg last week. I heard you were tripped over someone's leg when you were playing soccer. I'm surprised that you were so seriously injured. Did you see a doctor and get a plaster cast? Once broke, a bone might become weaker so it may be easily broken again. You must take good care of yourself during the healing process. I believe it must be very uncomfortable for you. You'll need to get proper exercise to strengthen that bone. It'll take time and I hope you'll get better soon.

How are you? I'm feeling very good these days. Yesterday I bought, "In Utero", Nirvana's fourth album. You said you liked to listen to rock music, didn't you? I'm glad to know that you and I have the same hobby! I enjoy almost all kinds of music, but especially rock music : heavy metal and alternative rock!!! I'm crazy about Nirvana, so I'm collecting all of their albums. I'm sure you know them... Nirvana is famous for their new style of rock music called "Grunge". If you didn't have a chance to listen to their music, then what a pity!!! I would strongly recommend their so-called best album, "Nevermind". No need to explain! How have you been? I was pretty busy because of mid-term exams. But they're over now and I'm glad. I like to exercise in my spare time. Do you like sports? I like sports very much because I enjoy physical activities. I like soccer the most, both playing and watching. I attend a co-ed school, so sometimes I have the chance to play soccer with the boys during gym class. I usually play defense and sometimes it can get pretty rough, but it's much fun and I really enjoy it! Recently, I'm taking interest in watching NBA games, but I don't know many things about it. 넌 스포츠를 좋아하니? 나는 몸을 움직이는 걸 굉장히 좋아해! 내가 제일 좋아하는 건 축구야. 난 여자지만, 다른 애들과는 달리 보는 것과 직접 뛰는 것 둘 다 좋아해. 나는 남녀 공학에 다니고 있어서 체육 시간에 가끔씩은 남자애들이랑 축구 경기를 할 때도 있어. 그런 때면 보통은 수비를 맡지. 때때로 경기가 거칠어질 경우도 있지만 그럴 때도 아주 재미있다고 생각하고 즐기는 편이야.
최근에는 NBA에도 관심을 가지게 됐어. 하지만 많은 걸 알지는 못해. 그냥 관심만 있을 뿐이지. 나한테 NBA에 관해서 좀 알려 줄 수 있니? 기다리고 있을게.

Dear Ken,

Are you getting along all right? Summer vacation started a couple of weeks ago and I've spent my time listening to music, watching TV, studying(?), and playing computer games. Do you like computer games? I really enjoy playing computer games! Usually I play role playing games and tactical simulation games. The most impressive game I've ever played is 'Tae Hang Hae Shi Dae 4'(The age of great voyage 4) made by KOEI. I like it because of its easy interface, beautiful graphics and cool story-role playing game.
Oh, one more! Starcraft, Brood War! I'm nearly addicted to it, but it's so difficult to beat the game... I heard that Brood War was also a big hit throughout Japan. If you like Starcraft, I want to have game with you on Battle Net someday... Is this OK?

2주 전에 여름 방학이 시작됐단다. 그래서 나는 음악을 듣거나 TV를 보거나 공부를 하거나(?) 컴퓨터 게임을 하면서 시간을 보내고 있어.
너는 컴퓨터 게임을 좋아하니? 난 진짜 좋아하는데. 보통은 롤 플레잉이나 전략 시뮬레이션 게임을 해. 지금까지 내가 해본 게임 중에서 제일 기억에 남는 건 '대항해시대 4' 라고 KOEI사에서 만든 게임이야. 이 게임은 인터페이스가 간단하고 그래픽도 예쁘고 또 롤 플레잉에 필적하는 스토리를 가지고 있기 때문에 내가 가장 좋아하는 게임이지.
아, 하나 더 있다. 스타크래프트 부루드 워! 난 스타크래프트에 거의 중독될 뻔 했어. 하지만 게임에서 이기는 건 쉽지 않더군... 일본에서도 부루드 워가 유행한다고 들었는데. 너도 스타크래프트 좋아한다면, 우리 언제 배틀넷에서 한 판 붙어 볼까? 어때?

Spring is just around the corner here cause the flowers are beginning to bloom. What season is it in Austria? Are the beautiful flowers showing off themselves yet? Beautiful flowers, mountains becoming green are in my thought nature's gift to us.
Anyway, I want to ask you if you can send me something. Though I know that asking is somewhat rude, I would like to have some spoons with something about Mozart on them. I have a friend who bought some products or souvenirs about Mozart. I've heard that Austria, especially Vienna, is the land or the city of Mozart. He is my most favorite composer and his compositions always fills me with delight.
I think it might be very difficult for you to send me a sets of spoons, but I would be very thankful if you could. I'll send you a wonderful Korean souvenir in return. I will tell you my address, Take care.

How are you doing? I hope your happy and doing well at school. I want to thank you for those great presents that I asked for. Your gifts were just what I wanted and I'm decorating my room with the set of spoons. I think they are the most precious things in my room and I found out that Austria is really the land of Mozart. All the spoons had writings on them "Made In Austria" and I think every country has its own souvenirs which can represent the culture or life of that land. For example, Austria is famous for its products about great musicians (like Mozart). Holland is famous for windmills and roses. Every country has something to be proud of and to show off to the rest of the world.
You made me feel like we had a real friendship. When I asked for those spoons, I thought it would be really hard, but you graciously answered my rude request and I can now think about our friendship whenever I see the set of spoons. Thank you!! Thank you very much!!

I got your photos. Now I can see that you're very handsome and tall with lots of friends. My classmates, especially the girls, want to say hello to you. Anyway I wonder if my presents arrived in Austria. If they arrived, I think your a little bit surprised at those masks. If not, then you can expect some Korean Traditional Masks called "Ha-hwae Tal". They are the most famous Korean traditional products. Everyone in Korea knows what these masks are. They were and still are worn when people perform mask dances or at a Korean Opera in a small town named "Ha-hwae Ma-uel"- I wonder if this explanation can mean what I want to tell you. In that small town, they preserve Korean Traditions including traditional life and traditional products. There is an interesting story about the masks you received ( or will receive). There was really bad disease in that town a long, long time ago. When one man slept, a fairy appeared in his dream. It said that the man had to make some masks to protect the towns people from the disease and that no one could see what he was making. The man began making masks, but then a woman who was curious about the man's work tried to see what he was making. Then lightening struck the man and killed him and his last mask remains incomplete (it doesn't have a chin). I want to see your happy face when you have those masks that represent my friendship towards you. Please notify me when you get my gift or if you already have it. I wish you many happy school days.
