Thank you for bringing up an interesting aspect of human nature in your excellent essay. It is a real irony that the desirable human qualities such as intelligence and leadership can very often be interpreted as hubris. (By the way, I am just learning this new word "hubris", thanks to you. It certainly is associated with the not-so-graceful words as insolence, impertinence, impudence, and contemptuousness...)

I witnessed a similar situation on the TV show "Survivors" last night. I enjoy the show to see their survival strategies, not so much of their physical survival in the wilderness but the mental game of surviving each other. Last night's episode was particularly interesting because the Maraamu tribe voted off their leader Hunter Ellis. Being a former navy pilot, he seemed most fit to survive. His leadership was instrumental in the first few days of island life. But he felt aggravated by his members' poor work ethic and stubborn attitudes when they lost three consecutive Immunity Challenges. He eventually vented his steam by saying, "You guys signed on to do this survival game, but you still have to survive. Otherwise, we are just going to dwindle out, and you arn't going to have any energy." Well, this leadership costed him dearly. He was seen as being hubristic by his tribal members, and that was the end of his game.

People with excellent intellence and leadership don't easily see that they can hurt others in their pursuit to "truth". Oedipus never knew the tragic end when he unwittingly killed his father Laius and married his mother Jocastar.

I like Oedipus the King because it instructs me various aspect of human nature. Oedipus is intellectual enough to solve the Sphinx's riddles. He is from noble family. He is really good natured and ideal person.

Nevetheless, he has some flaws. He has hot and quick temper and hubris(pride). He is a really self-assertive person so he is not willing to listen to others' advice. He has lack of political strategy so he usually loses prudence in judging something. He is a mortal who become an immortal.

The most fatal error is his miscalculation on his identity. He think he can escape from oracle which is doomed to catastrophe. He is a great man because of his intelligence and he is a sinner because of his intelligence.

I think life is full of irony. Because of Oedipus' excellent intelligence, he has hubris. Ironically, Oedipus's intelligence become a Jocaster's brooch which gouges his eyes again and again.

Why can't Oedipus realize his pursuit to truth will hurt himself and others? What a pity!
