Controversial Subjects

I've been waiting around for Epyon to bring us more controversies and excitement for this cafe. Likely than not, he is probably having too much fun on his own out there in the real world.

So I thought I would attempt to bring a bit of controversy and discord in this cafe. If the mountain does not come to Mohamed, Mohamed shall go to the mountain.... or something like that...

Abortion.

This has been one of the most controversial subjects in the U.S. Many want to outlaw abortion. They think of it in terms of killing innocent babies. The U.S. Supreme Court in a case called Roe versus Wade held that the U.S. Constitution created the right of privacy which gave the mothers certain right over their bodies that the government cannot interfere with. Some believe that the fetus should not be treated as a human being.

The question has been: when does a life begin? Is this a moral question, medical question or a legal question? Some anti-abortionists (usually relgious fanatics) have become so extreme that they even killed doctors who perform abortions. These fanatics do this in the name of God and in the name of human life.

I will not hide behind any pretense of "neutrality" in this issue. I think the answer is pretty clear. A fetus is not a baby (and should not be given a human status) until it comes out of mothers belly and becomes physically separated. I believe that until that time, a government (or anyone else for that matter) has no business telling the mother what to do with a part of her own body that she created practically all on her own. Sure, a father plays a part in this too, but a donation of sperm is nothing compared to carrying the fetus in your own body as it grows and extracts nutrition from your body.

Anyway... I am not sure whether this is even a controversy in Korea. What is the general feeling towards abortions in Korea? Is this a fairly accepted practice? Does this mean that Korea is more civilized than the U.S? Does this mean that the U.S. citizens still hold on to the backward puritanical religious beliefs? The same belief that was responsible for buring innocent women for practicing witchcraft in the days of the puritans?

What do you think?
