필자가 예전에 읽은 적이 있는 인도출신의 지성 '반다나 시바'의 책을 더듬어 보니 다음과 같은 대목이 나온다
I remember the part of the book written by Vandana Shiva who was an intellectual of India.
~인도의 소는 그들이 소비하는 것보다 많은 먹거리를 제공해 준다. 이와는 대조적으로 미국의 목축업에서 소들은 그들이 생산하는 것보다 여섯 배나 많은 먹이를 소비한다. 게다가 인도의 소들은 매년 7억 톤의 재생 가능한 거름을 배설한다. 절반은 연료로, 나머지 절반은 비료로 사용된다. 소똥 연료는 2,700만 톤의 등유, 3,500만 톤의 석탄, 6,800만 톤의 나무와 맞먹는 열을 내는데, 등유나 석탄, 나무는 모두 인도에서는 희소한 자원들이다.
그러나 소의 다양한 쓰임새를 기초로 한 매우 효율적인 이 식량 체계는 바로 그 효율성과 개발이라는 이름으로 파괴되어 왔다. 녹색 혁명은 기본이 되는 농업용 비료를 재생 가능한 유기 비료에서 재생 불가능한 화학비료로 바꾸어 버렸다. 백색 혁명은, 가축과 작물이 생태학적으로 통합된 것이라고 생각하지 않고, 소를 단순한 우유 기계로 격하시켜 버렸다.
많은 양을 생산하지 못하는 소농들과 생물 자원들은 불필요하다고 간주하는 데서 백색 혁명 고유의 폭력성이 드러난다. 인도의 소를 “비생산적인” 것으로 만드는 바로 그 세계적 상품화 과정 때문에 미국 목축업은 과도한 과도한 생산성으로 인해 유럽의 소들을 필요 없게 만들고 있다. 다양한 가축이 멸종됨에 따라 생명의 원천인 생물 자원들을 보호하고 보존하는 방법에 대한 지식도 사라진다. 생물 자원의 보호는 부농의 이익 보호와 농업 관련 기업의 통제로 대체된다.
작물은 모든 생물을 위한 식량이다. 작물은 인간과 가축의 식량일 뿐만 아니라, 토양 속에 사는 수많은 생물의 먹이이기도 하다. 이같이 유기물을 머금은 토양은 토양을 비옥하게 만드는 수백만의 미생물들의 고향이다.
집약적 축산 경제.유럽의 집약적 축산 경제에서는 소 먹이를 생산하는데 유럽이외의 지역보다 7배나 많은 땅을 필요로 한다. 사료 생산에 필요한 이 같은 “알려지지 않은 땅”은 사실상 자원을 집약적으로 이용하는 것이 아니라 조방적으로 이용하는 것이다.~
The cattle in India produce more edibles than they consume. In contrast, the cattle in U.S. consume six times more feedstuff than they produce. In addition, Indian cattle produce 700 million tons of recyclable manures every year. Half of the manures are used as fuel, and other half as fertilizer. The manure fuel produce heat equivalent to 27 million ton of kerosene, 35 million ton of coal, 68 million ton of wood. Keronese, coal, and wood are rare materials in India.
This kind of very effective food system which is based on various use of cattle, however, has been destroyed in the name of efficiency and development. Green revolution has adopted un-recyclable chemical fertilizer instead of recyclable organic fertilizer as agricultural fertilizer. White revolution discarded the idea of integration between cattle and farm crops, and downgraded cattle as milk machine.
The violence of white revolution is based on the idea that small farming and small bio-resources are not necessary because they are inferior in terms of productivity. Worldwide merchandising made Indian cattle 'unproductive'. American livestock industry was so excessively productive that it made European cattle unnecessary. Many species of domestic animals became extinct. Much knowledge of protecting the bio-resources which was the basis of life and agriculture disappeared. The protection of bio-resources is replaced as protection of rich farmer and control of agriculture by businessman. Farm crops are food for every living organisms in the earth. Farm crops supply food not only for humans and domestice animals but also for numerous living organisms in the soil. The soil which has rich organic materials is homeground of numerous micro organisms which make soil fertile. Intensive livestock economy of Europe requires 7 times more field to produce feedstuff for cattle than traditonal livestock economy. The 'undisclosed field' which is necessary for producing feedstuff for cattle makes intensive agriculture rather extentive.

When I meet someone firstly, most question was "What country are you from?"
2. 이 85km구간 사이에는 숙소로 할만한 곳이 없다.
어제 오늘 중간쯤까지 걸은 후 내일은 Shajahanpur의 숙소로 버스로 짐을 옮길 예정이다.
During this 85 km interval, there is no proper shelter.
After walking about half way, I am going to move baggage by bus to shelter in Shajahanpur.
3. 어제밤 버스를 기다리던 곳에 다시 도착해서 걷는다.
I started to walk from the place where I was waiting for the bus last night.
4. 사탕수수 공장에서 찌꺼기를 밭에 잔뜩 뿌려두었다.
The leftovers from the sugar cane factory were spread on the field.
5. 큰길 건너편 등교하는 아이들에 손을 흔들어 주니 마주 흔든다.
I waved to the children going to school. Then they waved back in the other side of the street.

7. 어느 일가족이 불을 쬐고 있는 모습을 찍자니 필자를 초청한다.
I took a picture of a group of people warming themselves at the bonfire.
They they invite me to join.
8. 모친쯤 되는 여주인이 필자에게 의자를 권하면서 불가까이 안내한다.
A lady who seems to be a mother guided me to the chair at the bonfire.
9. 과자와 차도 꺼내온다.
She offered me cookies and chai.
10. 청년들과 얘기하면서 셀카도 찍고,
I talked with them, and took a selfie with the youths.
11. 필자는 의자를 여주인에게 도로 권하고 기념사진을 찍는다. 반다나 시바를 연상케 하는 여걸이다.
I offered chair back to the lady, and took a picture with them.
She looked like a heroine who reminded me of Vandana Shiva.
12. 솜타는 방직기계를 돌리는 곳이다.
They operate a spinning machine at this place.
13. 생과일주스를 지나칠 수 없어 주문하였다.
I ordered a cup of raw fruit juice.
14. 어제 재회한 그 식당주인이 아들과 함께 차를 몰고 자신의 집으로 돌아가는 코스에서 필자를 다시 발견했다.
예사 인연이 아니다~
The owner of the restaurant whom I met again yesterday was driving back to his house with his son.
We met again. This is the third meeting, What a persistent karma!
15. 어느 간이식당에서 먹은 인도 요리 (짜파티(밀가루반죽구이)와 에그프라이카레)다.
I ordered an Indian dish, chapati (roasted flour paste) and egg fry curry, at a quick-luch restaurant.

The owner of the restaurant became friendly,and took a picture of me eating lunch.

A boy is operating a machine which concentrates sugar cane.

The signboard advertising cement factory was very impressive.
21. 오후에도 생과일주스를 한잔 하려니 사람들이 몰려든다.
In the afternoon, I ordered a cup of raw fruit juice.
A lot of people flocked to me.

A religious meeting of Hindu was going on.
25. 최근의 선거철과 맞물려 그런 집회가 자주 열리는 듯 하다.
This meeting seems to be related with the election which is near at hand.

While I walk, many people approached to me.
They wanted to take a selfie.
29. 오후 늦게 어느 공사장을 지나면서 만난 일행들. 이중 푸른 터번이 인상적이다.
Late in the afternoon, I was passing by a work place and met these people.
Among them, the man with blue turban was impressive.
30. 저녁무렵 숙소부근에서 만난 모닥불. 소도 곁불을 쬐고 있다.
Around sunset, I found this bonfire near the shelter.
A cattle is warming himself at the side.
