First, phytoplankton as food producers need the sunlight for their photosynthesis. The sunlight, however, cannot penetrate below 200 meters of the oceans' surface. Therefore, as phytoplankton cannot be alive without the sunlight, other lives cannot live in the deep oceans. Second, the sediment, which is natural fertilizer and promotes the bloom of life, goes upward to the oceans’ surface, resulting in lack of life in deep oceans.
