We Who Died to Sin

Summary:

Paul emphasizes that believers who are united with Christ are also united with Him in His death and resurrection. Therefore, they are no longer slaves to sin. Just as Christ died and rose again, believers are called to consider themselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Sin no longer has power over them because they have been spiritually transformed through Christ’s work.

Teaching:

By believing in Jesus, one becomes dead to the sin of drinking and acting violently under its influence. A person who is dead to alcohol cannot drink.

When we say that we have died to sin, it means “we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death.” By believing in Jesus, the marks of His death are imprinted on our bodies - our bodies are no longer what they used to be, and neither are our hearts.

Baptism is a significant event. When we are baptized in the name of Jesus and united with His death, it means our bodies have died to sin. This is so that we would no longer serve sin or let it reign over us like a king.

If we have died with Christ, we must also know that we will live with Him. Being baptized in the name of Jesus is to experience both death and life. This is the mark of Jesus.
