A Task That Must Be Done

Summary:

Paul explains that since he and other ministers have sown spiritual things among the Corinthians, it would be reasonable for them to receive material support in return. However, Paul and his companions have chosen not to use this right, so as not to hinder the gospel of Christ. He reminds them that those who serve in the temple receive their living from temple offerings, and likewise, the Lord ordained that those who preach the gospel should make their living from it. Yet Paul refuses to claim such support, preferring to preach the gospel freely. He emphasizes that preaching the gospel is not optional for him - it is a divine obligation laid upon him, and woe to him if he does not fulfill it.

Teaching:

“For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about, for I am under compulsion; for woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.”

Paul wrote most of the New Testament, yet he said he had nothing to boast about because preaching the gospel was something he was compelled to do. It was a duty he absolutely had to fulfill; if he did not, it would not go well for him.

In the same way, it is also for our benefit to spread the gospel. The more we seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness, the more our lives are blessed.

When we read and believe the Bible, we must accept its message. If we truly accept the word that says “woe to me if I do not preach the gospel,” we will naturally proclaim it at every opportunity. And the purpose of preaching the gospel is to win people - true evangelism is done for the sake of gaining souls.
