Do Not Despise the Church

Summary:

Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their disorderly conduct during the Lord’s Supper. Instead of coming together in unity, their gatherings cause division. Some eat their own meals ahead of others, leaving some hungry while others become drunk. Paul condemns this behavior, reminding them that such actions show contempt for the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing. He asks if they despise God’s church and shames them for turning a sacred meal into a selfish feast.

Teaching:

Today’s passage presents an example of an unprofitable church gathering—one marked by division and factions. The passage specifically refers to a division between those who have and those who have not, and the issue lies with those who have.

When gatherings become harmful, God does not commend them. To treat the church lightly is to despise the poor and to look down on the weak. Forming exclusive groups within the church is itself a sign of contempt for the church.

A gathering in itself does not constitute doing the work of the church; rather, whatever form the meeting takes, it should be one that shares and reflects the grace of Christ.
