Simply Red의 최대명반인 1991년 발표한 'Stars'와 1989년 그들의 세 번째
앨범 'A New Flame'의 수록곡 'If You Don’t Know Me By Now'를 이전에 소개했었죠.
이번곡은 'The Air That I Breathe', 'You Make Me Feel Brand New'입니다.
고전적인 소울을 현대적인 감각으로 리메크하는데 뛰어난 재능을 가진 밴드 Simply Red는
싱어 믹 허크날, 베이스 주자 토니 바우어즈, 드러머 크리스 조이스, 브라스 주자 팀 켈렛과
함께 1984년 팀을 결성했다 .
나중에 기타리스트 실반 리차드슨,건반 주자 프리츠 매킨타이어가 팀에 합류한다.
영국 맨체스터 출신의 심플리 레드는 흑인의 소울과 재즈, 리듬 앤 블루스를 백인적인 감정을
표현해낸 ‘블루 아이드 소울(Blue Eyed Soul)’ 그룹이며, 1980년 부터 현재까지 전세계적으로
4천만장 이상의 앨범 판매고를 기록했다.
그룹의 히트곡은 [Holding Back The Tears], [If You Don’t Know Me By Now] ,[Stars],
[Something Got Me Started]가 있고,리메크곡 [If You Don’t Know Me By Now]가 있다.
심플리 레드라고 지은 이유는 리더 [믹 허크날]의 머리 색깔이 빨간데서 착안해 지었다.
이 그룹은 엘렉트라 레코드사와 계약후 1985년 10월 데뷔앨범 [Picture Book]을 발표했고,
이 앨범에 실린 곡들 중 싱글곡 [Holding Back The Tears]가 빌보드 팝 차트에서 정상을
차지한다.
1987년 2집 [Men And Women]는 크게 히트하지 못하고 2 년뒤에는 세 번째 앨범
[A New Flame]의 수록곡 [If You Don’t Know Me By Now]를 통해 세계적으로 인정받는 그룹이
되었다.
그리고 1991년 [Stars]는 심플리 레드 최대의 명음반이 된다.
동명 타이틀 곡 [Stars]는 고독한 심정을 잘표현해, 전 세계인의 사랑받는 영원한곡이 된다.
1995년 다섯 번째 앨범 [Life]에서 ‘Fairground’라는 싱글 히트곡을 발표한후, 한동안 멤버
교체 후유증을 앓다가 , 1998년 앨범 6집 [Blue]를 발표하여 영국 차트 정상에 다시 올랐고 ,
1년 뒤 내놓은 [Love & The Russian Winter] 역시 좋은 반응을 이어갔으며, 2001년에는
앨범[It’s Only Love]를 발표했다.
지금은 많은멤버 교체 끝에 허크날 혼자 힘으로 그룹을 이끌고 있다.
