The Little River Band
학창시절 좋아하던 밴드중 하나인 The Little River Band입니다.
호주 출신 그룹인 이들은 호주가 배출한 Air Supply와 버금가는 연주실력과 가창력을 지닌
밴드입니다.
오늘은 1979년 7월 발표한 네번째 앨범 「First Under The Wire」에서 싱글 커트된
＜Lonesome Loser＞와 ＜Cool Change＞를 올려봅니다.
오스트레일리아의 시드니 북쪽 53km 떨어진 곳에 이름모를 작은강 Little River가 있다. 밴드를 구성할 초창기 리드 보컬 Glenn Shorrock은 이곳을 거닐게 되었고 그룹 명칭을 무엇으로 정할까 고심하던 중 나무 팻말에 「Little River」라는 글을 보게 되어 오늘의 이름이 있게 된다. Little River Band의 첫 출범은 1976년 4월 데뷰 앨범 「Little River Band」로 시작된다. 이들의 노래는 곧 성공을 거두게 되는데 싱글 ＜It's A Long Way There＞와 ＜I'll Always Call Your Name＞은 아직도 이들이 즐겨부르는 레파토리로 사랑을 받는다. 이들의 첫 앨범은 오스트레일리아 음반제작 협회로부터 「올해의 앨범」상을 받았고 이 앨범에 수록된 ＜Down Under＞는 이들 최고의 연주물이라 하여 표창을 받기도 한다. 1977년 6월, 이들의 두번째 앨범 「Ddiamantina Cocktail」을 발표, 여기서 싱글 커트한 노래인 ＜Happy Anniversary＞와 ＜Help Is On It's Way＞는 국제적인 인기를 얻었으며 우리나라 방문시에도 불러주었던 곡이기도 하다.
이 앨범은 50만장 이상의 판매고를 올렸으며, 제1회 오스트레일리아 록 음악상의 최고 연예상, 최고 앨범상, 최고 앨범 쟈켓상, 리드 보컬인 Glenn Shorrock에게는 최우수 남자가수상, 심지어 이들의 매니저까지 최고의 매니저상을 받는 영광을 얻게된다. 오스트레일리아의 본격적 록 뮤지션이 세계 음악 시장에 도전한 것은 이들이 처음으로, 이후에 AC/DC, Sprit Enz, Air Supply 등이 큰 인기를 얻었지만 Little River Band의 음악은 저력있는 음악성과 완벽한 화음으로 이들에게 큰 영향을 주었다. 이들의 세번째 앨범인 「Sleeper Catcher」를 1978년 5월에 발표하여 200만장 이상의 매상고를 올렸으며 오스트레일리아 록 음악 사상 가장 많은 앨범 판매고를 세운다. 여기서 싱글 커트된 ＜Reminiscing＞과 ＜Lady＞, 이러한 곡들은 이들이 대중적으로 인기를 얻기 전부터 국내 팝 팬들에게 친숙했던 곡이기도 하다.
이들의 음악성은 미국의 그룹 Doobie Brothers나 Eagles, Fleetwood Mac과 같이 견줄 수 있는 실력과 재능을 겸비한 그룹으로 특별한 리더가 따로 없을만큼 각자 개성과 실력이 잘 융합되어 있는데 모두가 노래하고 작곡하며 또한 연주 실력도 대단한 뮤지션으로 꼽힌다. 1979년 7월, 네번째 앨범 「First Under The Wire」를 발표하여 싱글 커트된 ＜Lonesome Loser＞와 ＜Cool Change＞ ＜Mistress of Mine＞ 등은 고전적인 록 비트로 인기를 얻게됐다. 1980년 4월, 이들은 세계순회공연의 실황을 담은 두장짜리 앨범 「Backstage Pass」를 발표하여 우리나라 공연시에도 느꼈지만 스튜디오 레코딩이나 라이브 레코딩이나 변함없는 사운드를 들려주었다. 1981년은 이들에게 새로운 도약의 한 해였다. 앨범 「Time Exposure」는 그룹 Beatles의 프로듀서였던 George Martin이 맡아 주었으며 싱글·커트한 ＜The Night Owls＞는 일찌기 챠트의 Top 10 안에 드는 빅히트를 날린다. 이후 ＜Take It Is On Me＞가 82년 3월까지 챠트에 올랐으며 앨범은 100만장 이상의 매상고를 올렸다.
1981년 12월에는 국내에 내한하여 공연을 갖기도 했던 이들은 키보드 주자인 멜 로건을 새롭게 맞아들여 7인조 밴드로 면모를 갖추기도 했지만 얼마후 리드 싱어인 Glenn Shorrock가 그룹을 떠나 사운드의 변화를 갖는 계기가 되었다. 성인 취향의 음악을 추구해오던 이들의 사운드는 글렌이 탈퇴하면서 다소 헤비한 멋을 풍기고 있는데, 1983년에 발표한 「The Net」란 앨범에서 더욱 그러한 면을 엿볼 수 있다. 이 앨범에서 ＜We Two＞와 ＜Down On The Border＞가 싱글 커트되어 좋은 반응을 얻고 있는데, 이러한 곡에서는 새로운 보컬리스트 John Farnham의 거칠거칠하고 우람한 목소리가 더욱 다른 분위기를 느끼게 한다. 신선한 감각의 동양적인 연주와 오스트레일리아의 토속적인 분위기로 국내 팝팬들에게 대단한 인기에 있었던 리틀 리버 밴드는 새로운 감각의 연주 스타일로 변형된 모습을 보여주고 있다.
