제 11 강: 돌리다(Vert) 와 비틀다(Tort)
라틴어원 vert 혹은 vers 는 라틴동사 vertere 에서 유래하는데 그 뜻은 영어로 ‘turn(돈다, 돌리다)’ 이며 adversary, adverse, adversity, averse, aversion, avert, convert, conversion, convertible, divert,
diversion, extrovert, extroverted, extroversion, introvert, introverted, introversion, perverse, perversity, pervert, perverted, versatile, versatility, version, vertigo 등의 영어단어에 쓰인다.
Adversary(적, 원수)는 an opponent or an enemy 로 정의되며 어원적으로 보면 어떤 사람이 나로부터 ‘돌아섰다’ 는 것을 의미한다. President Bush regarded Saddam Hussein as his adversary. (부시 대통령은 사담 후세인을 자신의 적으로 간주했다.)
Adverse(적대적인, 불리한) 는 acting or serving to oppose 로 정의되어 사람이나 환경들이 나로부터 ‘돌아선’, 즉 우호적이지 못한 것을 의미한다. Abraham Lincoln became a successful
Adversity(역경, 곤경) 은 a state of hardship or affliction 으로 정의되어 곤란한 상황이나 고통을 주는 환경을 의미한다. No adversity could prevent Thomas Edison from inventing everyday necessities. (어떠한 역경도 토마스 에디슨이 일상생활에 필요한 물건들을 발명하는 것을 막지 못했다.)
Averse(반감을 가진, 혐오하는) 은 having a feeling of opposition 으로 정의되어 어떤 사람이나 사물에 대하여 반대하는 감정을 가진 상태를 나타낸다. 명사형은 aversion(반감, 혐오감)이다. Although I don’t drink much, I am not averse to the occasional glass of wine. (비록 나는 술을 많이 마시지 않아도 이따금씩 마시는 포도주에 대해 반감을 가지지는 않는다.)
Avert(회피하다) 는 to turn away or to ward off something 으로 정의되어 어떤 것으로부터 나의 눈을 ‘돌리거나’, 어떤 일이 일어나기 전에 미리 피한다는 의미를 가진다. The student cheated on the test while averting his teacher’s eyes. (그 학생은 자기 선생님의 눈길을 피하면서 시험 중 컨닝을 했다.)
Converse(반대의, 반대) 는 형용사로는 opposite로 정의되어 어떤 것에 반대되는 이라는 의미를 가지며, 명사로는 the opposite 로 정의되어 반대되는 것을 의미한다. My mother has a converse opinion on the topic. (어머니는 주제에 관해 반대 의견을 가지고 계신다.) If the project is

Convert(형태를 바꾸다, 개종시키다, 개종자) 는 동사로는 to change something into another form or to persuade someone to change his belief or religion으로 정의되어 어떤 사물의 형태를 바꾸거나 어떤 사람의 신념이나 종교를 바꾸는 것을 의미하는데 그 명사형은 conversion(변형, 개종)이며 그 형용사형은 convertible(변형되는, 컨버터벌 자동차)이다. 한편, convert 가 자체적으로 명사로 쓰이는 경우 one who has been converted from one religion to another로 정의되어 자신의 종교가 바뀐 개종자를 의미한다. Divert(방향을 선회하다, 기분전환하다)는 to turn aside from a course or direction/to distract 로 정의되어 현재 일하고 있는 방향에서 벗어나 다른 방향으로 ‘돌리거나’ 분위기를 바꾸는 것을 의미한다. 명사형으로 diversion(방향선회, 기분전환)이 있다. FBI resources were mostly diverted from investigating real crimes to detecting possible terrorist attacks. (미연방수사국의 자원이 진짜 범죄수사로부터 있을지도 모를 테러공격을 감지하는 데로 대부분 돌려졌다.)
Extrovert(외향적인 사람) 는 a person who is active and confident, and who enjoys being others 로 정의되어 성격이 외향적인 사람을 나타낸다. 즉, 그 사람의 관심이 자기 밖으로 ‘돌려져’ 있다. 형용사형은
extroverted(외향적인)이고 명사형은 extroversion(외향적인 성향)이다.
James is a total extrovert who will talk to anybody. (제임스는 누구와도 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 완전히 외향적인 사람이다.)
Introvert(내성적인 사람)은 a person who is quiet and shy, and who does not enjoy being with others 로 정의되어 조용하고 부끄러움이 많아서 남들과 같이 어울리는 것을 싫어하는 사람을 의미한다. 즉, 그 사람의 관심이 자기 안으로 ‘돌려져’ 있다. 형용사형는 introverted(내성적인)이고 명사형은 introversion(내성적인 성향)이다.
Perverse(불합리한)은 behaving in an unreasonable way로 정의되어 어떤 사람의 행동이 비합리적인 기준에 의해 이루어진 것을 의미한다. 동사형은 pervert(잘못된 길로 인도하다, 타락시키다)이고, 이 단어의 형용사형은 perverted(도덕적으로 타락한)이며, 명사형은 perversion(도덕적인 타락)이나 perversity(잘못을 고집하기, 도덕적인 타락)이다. My brother was perverse in that he did not want to change his habit even if he knew it was wrong. (내 동생은 자신의 습관이 잘못된 것임을 알고도 바꾸려 하지 않은 점에서 불합리했다.)
Versatile(다재 다능한)은 good at doing a lot of different things and able to learn new skills easily로 정의되어 어떤 사람이 다양한 일을 할 수 있거나 새로운 기술을 쉽게 배우는 능력이 있음을 의미한다. 명사형은 versatility(다재다능)이다. Michael Jordan is a versatile athlete: he is good at playing both basketball and golf. (농구와 골프 양쪽 모두 잘하는 마이클 조던은 다재 다능한 체육선수이다.)
Version(판, 번역본)은 a copy of something that is different from other forms of it, or a person’s description of an event compared with other descriptions, or a translation of something으로 정의되어 어떤 사물의 한가지 형태나 어떤 사건에 대한 한 사람의 묘사 혹은 어떤 책 등의 번역본을 의미한다. Vertigo(현기증, 어지럼증)은 a sick dizzy feeling 으로 정의되어 어지러운 증세를 나타낸다. 형용사형은 vertiginous(현기증을 느끼게 하는, 현기증이 나는) 이다. Looking down from the top of the mountain, the hiker felt a mild vertigo. (산의 정상에서 내려다보며 그 등산가는 약간의 현기증을 느꼈다.)
다음으로, 라틴어원 tort 혹은 tors 는 라틴동사 torquere 에서 유래하는데 그 뜻은 영어로 ‘twist(비틀다)’ 이며 contort, contorted, contortion, distort, distorted, distortion, retort, torque, torsion, tort, tortuous, torture, torturous 등의 영어단어에 쓰인다.
Contort(홱 비틀다, 일그러지게 하다) 는 to twist something, especially one’s face or body 로 정의되어 어떤 것을 홱 비틀다 혹은 일그러지게 하다 라는 의미이다. 형용사형은 contorted(비틀어진, 일그러진)이며, 명사형은 contortion(비틀림, 일그러짐)이다. The defeated boxer’s face

Distort(비꼬다, 왜곡하다) 는 to explain something in a way that makes it seem something else 어떤 것을 그 본 모습이 아닌 것처럼 설명하다 라는 의미이다. 형용사형은 distorted(왜곡된)이고, 명사형은
distortion(왜곡)이다. People say that President Bush distorted his contender, John Kerry’s image to win the election. (부시 대통령은 선거에
이기기 위해 자신의 경쟁자 죤 케리의 이미지를 왜곡했다고 사람들은 말한

Retort(말대꾸하다, 말대꾸) 는 동사로 to reply quickly, in an angry or humorous way로 정의되어 화가 나거나 익살스럽게 짧은 대꾸를 하는 것을 의미하거나 명사로 a short and angry or humorous reply로 정의되어 짧은 말대꾸를 의미한다. My angry father retorted, “Nonsense.” (화가 난 아버지가 “말도 안돼” 라고 말대꾸했다.)
Torque(출력) 은 the power that makes something turn around a central point 로 정의되어 어떤 엔진 등이 회전하면서 내는 힘을 나타낸다.
A big SUV generally has more torque than a big sedan. (큰 SUV가 큰 세단차 보다 보통 엔진출력이 좋다.)
Torsion(비틀림)은 the twisting of a piece of metal 로 정의되어 어떤 금속이 비틀리는 것을 의미한다. Stainless steel is more resistant to torsion than copper. (스테인레스 강철은 구리보다 비틀림에 더 강하다.)
Tort(민사상의 상해)는 a wrongful action that is not a crime and can be dealt with in a civil court 로 정의되어 범죄가 아닌 잘못된 행동으로서 다만 민사상의 손해만 물을 수 있는 행위를 말한다.
