제 36 강: 동등한(equa)
라틴어원 equa, equi 혹은 egal은 ‘동등한’ 것을 의미하는데 이 어원을 가진 영어단어로는 egalitarian, egalitarianism, equality, equalize, equanimous, equanimity, equilibrium, equinox, equitable, equity, equivalent, equivocal, equivocate, inequity, inequitable, unequivocal 등이 있다.
Egalitarian(이갤리테리언)은 형용사로서 believing that everyone is equal and should have equal rights 로 정의되어 ‘평등한’ 이란 의미를 지니며, 그 명사형 egalitarianism(이갤리테리어니즘)은 ‘평등주의’ 를 의미한다. The French Revolution was based on the ideology of egalitarianism. (프랑스대혁명은 평등주의이념에 기초하고 있었다.)
Equality(이퀄러티)는 명사로서 a position or situation in which people have the same rights로 정의되어 ‘평등’ 을 의미한다. Martin Luther King, Jr. asserted that African-Americans should enjoy the same equality as whites. (마틴루터 킹은 흑인들이 백인들과 똑같은 평등권을 누려야 한다고 주장했다.)
Equalize(이퀄라이즈)는 동사로서 to make two or more things the same in size, value, or amount 로 정의되어 ‘동등하게 하다’ 라는 의미를 가진다. His annual income was equalized with that of his officemate. (그의 연소득은 회사동료의 그것과 동등하게 되었다.)
Equanimous(이쿼니머스)는 형용사로서 calm or tranquil 로 정의되어 마음 등이 ‘고요한’ 혹은 ‘평안한’ 상태를 나타내며, 그 명사형은 equanimity(이쿼니머티)로서 ‘고요’ 또는 ‘평안’ 을 의미한다. The Buddhist monk looked equanimous while he was meditating. (명상하고 있는 동안 그 불교승려는 평안하게 보였다.)
Equilibrium(이퀼리브리엄)은 명사로서 a balance between opposing forces or influences 로 정의되어 서로 반대되는 세력 간의 ‘균형’ 을 의미한다. Both
Equinox(이퀴낙스)는 명사로서 one of the two times a year when day and night have the same length로 정의되어 밤과 낮의 길이가 같은 ‘춘분’ 혹은 ‘추분’ 을 의미하는데, 특별히 춘분은 vernal equinox(버널 이퀴낙스) 라고 하며, 추분은 autumnal equinox(오텀널 이퀴낙스) 라고 한다. Equitable(에퀴터블)은 형용사로서 treating someone in an equal way, or fair 로 정의되어 ‘공평한’ 것을 의미한다. The equitable distribution of wealth among the family members was pursued by the lawyer. (그 변호사는 가족구성원들 간에 재산을 공평하게 분배하려고 추구했다.)
Equity(에쿼티)는 명사로서 fairness 로 정의되어 ‘공평’ 을 의미하거나 the value of a property or of a company’s shares 로 정의되어 ‘자산가치’ 를 의미한다.
Google has increased its equity dramatically by selling an astronomical number of advertisements on its website. (구글사는 자사의 웹페이지상에 천문학적인 숫자의 광고를 팔아 그 자산가치를 극적으로 증가시켜왔다.)
Equivalent(이퀴벌런트)는 형용사로서 having the same value, purpose, job, etc 로 정의되어 ‘상응하는’ 또는 ‘대응하는’ 이란 의미를 가진다. He deserves harvesting the equivalent amount he has invested. (그는 자신이 투자한 금액에 상응하는 금액을 거둬들이는 것이 마땅하다.)
Equivocal(이퀴보컬)은 형용사로서 having more than one meaning or deliberately unclear 로 정의되어 한 개 이상의 의미를 가지거나 고의적으로 불분명하여 ‘애매모호한’ 또는 ‘흐릿한’ 이란 의미를 가진다. The witness gave an evasive and equivocal testimony. (증인은 회피적이면서 애매모호한 증언을 하였다.)
Equivocate(이퀴버케이트)는 동사로서 to say something that has more than one possible meaning in order to avoid giving a clear answer 로 정의되어 명확한 답을 주기를 꺼려하여 ‘애매모호하게 말하다’ 라는 의미를 가진다. The student equivocated his answer to the difficult question. (학생은 어려운 문제에 대해 애매모호하게 답을 했다.)
Inequity(이니쿼티)는 명사로서 unfairness or something that is unfair 로 정의되어 ‘불공평’ 을 의미하며, 그 형용사형은 inequitable(이니퀴터블)로서 ‘불공평한’ 이란 의미를 가진다. The bankrupt company showed gross inequities of its revenue and expenditure. (파산한 회사는 전반적으로 불공평한 수입과 지출을 보여주었다.)
Unequivocal(언이퀴보컬)은 형용사로서 completely clear and having no possibility of doubt 로 정의되어 완전히 ‘명쾌한’ 또는 ‘분명한’ 것을 의미한다.
My boss gave an unequivocal answer of “No” to my proposal. (나의 상관은 내 제안에 대해 분명하게 No라는 답을 주었다.)
