개정판 Greek/Latin 어원 영어단어 (20) 소리(son) 소리(phon)

 

            라틴어원 son ‘소리’ 의미하며, 이는 원래 라틴동사 sonare에서 유래하는데 영어의 to sound(소리나다) 해당된다. 어원을 가진 단어들은 assonance, assonant, dissonance, dissonant, resonance, resonant, resonate, resound, resounding, sonar, sonata, sonic, supersonic, sonnet, sonogram, sonority, sonorous, ultrasound 등이 있다.

 

           Assonance(어소넌스: 유사한 , 유운) the similarity in the vowel sounds of words that are close together 정의되어 근접한 곳에 위치한 단어의 모음이 유사하여 발음할 음악적인 효과가 나는 것을 의미하는데 보통 시적인 표현에서 많이 쓰인다.  형용사형은 assonant(어소넌트: 유사한 음을 가진)이다.  There is assonance in the words born and warm, both of which have two similar vowel sounds. (영어단어 born warm 유운을 공유하는 , 단어 모두 유사한 모음발음을 가지고 있다.)

 

           Dissonance(디소넌스: 불협화음, 불일치) a harsh combination of sounds or disagreement 정의되어 개의 조화롭지 못한 음이 결합되어 있거나 서로 의견이 불일치한 것을 의미한다.  형용사형은 dissonant(디소넌트: 불협화음의, 불일치한)이다. President Bush and the Congress had a severe dissonance concerning the budget for Iraqi War. (부시 대통령과 의회는 이라크 전쟁예산에 관해 심각한 불일치를 보였다.)

 

           Resonance(레조넌스: 공명, 반향) the deep, loud, continuing quality of sound 정의되어 어떤 소리가 깊고 높게 계속 울리는 공명을 의미하거나, the special meaning that something has for you because it relates to your own experiences 정의되어 어떤 일이 당신의 경험과 관련되어 있기 때문에 당신으로부터 반향을 얻는 것을 의미한다.  형용사형은 resonant(레조넌트: 공명의, 반향의)이다.  The movie had a special resonance for me. ( 영화는 내게 특별한 반향을 불러 일으켰다.)

 

           Resonate(레조네이트: 반향을 불러 일으키다, 공명하다) to have a special meaning or effect if an event or message relates to ones experiences 어떤 사건이나 메시지가 사람에게 반향을 불러 일으키는 것을 의미하거나, to make a deep, loud, clear sound that continues for a long time으로 정의되어 소리가 공명하는 것을 의미한다. Martin Luther King, Jr.s name resonates in the heart of every American. (모든 미국사람들의 가슴 속에 마틴 루터 주니어 목사의 이름이 반향을 불러 일으키고 있다.)  The rumble of the taiko drum resonated through the air. ( 북의 우렁찬 연주소리가 대기 속으로 공명되었다.)

 

           Resound(리자운드: 소리로 가득하다, 공명하다) to be filled with sounds 정의되어 소리들로 가득한 것을 의미하거나, to have a sound continued loudly and clearly 정의되어 어떤 소리가 크고 분명하게 공명하는 것을 의미한다.  형용사형은 resounding(리자운딩: 소리가 울리는, 공명하는)이다. The auditorium resounded with thunderous applause. (강당은 우뢰와 같은 박수소리로 가득찼다.) Laughter and cheers resounded through the building. (웃음소리와 환호소리가 건물 전체에 공명했다.)

 

           Sonar(소우나: 음파탐지기) equipment on a ship or submarine that uses sound waves to find out the position of objects under the water 정의되어 음파를 이용하여 속의 물체를 파악하는 음파탐지기를 의미한다.  The ship detected an enemy submarine by using its sonar. (음파탐지기를 이용하여 배는 적군의 잠수함 척을 탐지했다.)

 

           Sonata(소내터: 소나타) a piece of music with three or four parts that is written for a piano, or for a piano and another instrument 정의되어 보통 피아노나 피아노와 다른 하나의 악기에 의해 연주되는 형식의 소나타 음악을 의미한다. Beethovens Spring is a sonata played by a piano and a violin. (베토벤의 “봄” 소나타로서 피아노와 바이올린으로 연주된다.). 

 

           Sonic(소닉: 음향의, 음속의) relating to audible sound 정의되어 음향에 관련된 것을 의미하거나, having the speed of sound in air 정의되어 소리의 속도와 관련된 것을 의미한다.  There was a sonic boom when the jet plane sped away over the town. (제트기가 마을 상공을 날아갈 충격음이 들렸다.)

 

           Supersonic(수퍼소닉: 초음속의) having a speed greater than the speed of sound 정의되어 소리의 속도를 뛰어넘는 것을 의미한다.  Supersonic airplanes transport passengers across the ocean. (대양을 가로질러 초음속여객기가 승객들을 수송한다.)

 

           Sonnet(소넷: 소네트) a 14-line verse with one of several conventional rhyme schemes 정의되어 전통적인 운율을 가진 14행짜리 시를 의미한다.  Shakespeare composed many impressive sonnets. (셰익스피어는 많은 인상적인 소네트를 썼다.)

 

           Sonogram(소노그램: 초음파사진) an image for example of an unborn baby inside its mothers body, that is produced by a machine which passes electrons through the body 정의되어 초음파로써 신체 내의 태아 등을 찍은 사진을 의미한다.  The pregnant woman wanted to know the gender of her baby in her womb through the sonogram. (임신한 여자는 초음파 사진을 통해 자신의 태아의 성별을 알고 싶어했다.)

 

           Sonority(소노러티: 울려퍼짐) the state of having a pleasant full deep sound 정의되어 어떤 소리가 깊고 풍부하게 울려퍼지는 상태를 말한다.  형용사형은 sonorous(울려퍼지는)이다.  The jazz musician enjoyed the rich sonority of the bass. ( 재즈음악가는 베이스의 풍부한 울려퍼지는 소리를 즐겼다.)  The singer has a sonorous voice. ( 가수는 울려퍼지는 음성을 지니고 있다.)

 

           Ultrasound(얼트러사운드: 초음파, 초음파측정) sound that is higher than human beings can hear 정의되어 초음파를 의미하거나 a medical process that produces an image of what is inside your body 정의되어 초음파측정을 나타낸다.  Ultrasound showed that she was expecting twins. (초음파측정에 의하면 그녀는 쌍둥이를 낳을 예정이었다.)

 

           다음으로, 그리스어원 phon ‘소리’ 의미하는데, 어원을 가진 단어들은 cacophonous, cacophony, euphonious, euphony, phoneme, phonemic, phonemics, phonetic, phonetics, phonological, phonologist, phonology, phonograph, polyphonic, polyphony, symphonic, symphony 등이 있다.

 

           Cacophonous(캐코포너스: 불협화음의, 불일치의) having harsh unpleasant sounds 정의되어 소리가 서로 화음을 이루지 못하고 시끄럽기만 것을 나타낸다.  명사형은 cacophony(캐코포니: 불협화음)이다.  A cacophony of voices in a dozen languages filled the train station. (수십개의 외국어로 떠드는 불협화음의 목소리들이 기차정거장을 가득 채웠다.)

 

           Euphonious(유포니어스: 듣기에 좋은) pleasant to listen to 어떤 소리가 듣기에 좋은 것을 의미한다.  명사형은 euphony(유포니: 기분좋은 소리)이다.  This cello produces euphonious sounds. ( 첼로는 듣기에 좋은 음들을 낸다.)

 

           Phoneme(포니임: 음소) the smallest unit of speech that can be used to make one word different from another 단어를 구성하고 있는 최소단위를 의미한다.  형용사형은 phonemic(포니믹: 포음소의)이고, 그것을 공부하는 학문을 phonemics(포니믹스: 음소론)이라고 한다.  The pig is different from the word big because the phoneme ‘p’ is different from the phoneme ‘b’. 

 

           Phonetic(포네틱: 음성의) relating to the sounds of human speech 정의되어 인간대화 속에 등장하는 음성에 관련된 것을 의미한다. 그런 음성을 연구하는 학문을 phonetics(포네틱스: 음성학)이라고 한다.  Phonetic alphabets are used to show the pronunciation of a word. ( 단어의 발음을 표시하기 위해 음성철자가 쓰인다.)

 

           Phonology(포놀러지: 음운론, 음성학) the study of the system of speech sounds in a language 정의되어 음성에 관한 체계적인 학문을 나타낸다. 형용사형은 phonological(포놀러지컬: 음운론의)이고, 그런 연구를 하는 학자를 phonologist(포놀러지스트: 음운론자)라고 한다. Phonology analyzes human speech in a systematic way. (음운론은 인간의 대화를 체계적으로 분석한다.)

 

           Phonograph(포노그래프: 축음기) a machine that reproduces sound by a stylus in contact with a grooved rotating disk 정의되어 에디슨이 발명한 축음기를 의미한다.  Thomas Edison invented the first phonograph. (토마스 에디슨은 최초의 축음기를 발명했다.)

 

           Polyphony(폴리포니: 다음, 다성음악) music with two or more independent melodic parts sounded together 정의되어 이상의 독립적인 멜로디가 결합된 다성음악을 나타낸다.  형용사형은 polyphonic(폴리포닉: 다성음악의)이다.  Bach was famous for composing many polyphonic pieces. (바하는 많은 다성음악작품 작곡으로 유명했다.) 

 

           Symphony(심포니: 교향곡, 교향악단) a long complicated piece of music for a large orchestra, in three or four main parts 정의되어 교향곡을 의미하거나, a group of musicians led by a conductor 정의되어 교향악단을 나타낸다. 형용사형은 symphonic(심포닉: 교향곡의, 교향악단의)이다.  Beethovens Symphony No. 9 is frequently played by famous orchestras around the world. (베토벤의 교향곡 9번은유명한 교향악단들에 의해 전세계적으로 자주 연주된다.)
