개정판 Greek/Latin 어원 영어단어(39) 새로운(Nov/Neo/Nou)
라틴어원 ‘nov’, ‘neo’, ‘nou’ 는 ‘새로운’ 이라는 의미를 가지는데, 이 어원에서 유래하는 영어단어로는 novel, novella, novelty, innovate, neologism, neolithic, neophyte, nouveau riche, renovate등이 있다.
Novel(나블)은 명사로서 a long written story in which characters and events are usually imaginary 로 정의되어 ‘소설’ 을 의미하거나, 형용사로서 not like anything known before and thought of as new, unusual, and interesting으로 정의되어 ‘참신한’ 또는 ‘새로운’ 이란 의미를 가진다. 예문: Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote wonderful novels and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.(가브리엘 가르시아 마르께스는 훌륭한 소설들을 써서 1982년 노벨문학상을 받았다.) 예문: That is a novel idea-selling ice cream in Antartica. (남극대륙에서 아이스크림을 파는 것-그것은 참신한 생각이다.)
Novella(노벨라)는 명사로서 a story that is shorter than a novel but longer than a short story 로 정의되어 ‘중편소설’을 의미한다. 예문: The novelist is known for his marvelous novellas which have attracted many readers and critics alike. (그 소설가는 많은 독자들과 비평가들 모두를 사로잡은 훌륭한 중편소설들로 유명하다.)
Novelty(나블티)는 명사로서 Something new and unusaul which attracts people’s attention and interest 로 정의되어 사람들의 관심이나 흥미를 끄는 ‘새로운 것’ 이나 ‘진귀한 것’ 을 의미한다. 예문: A car was a novelty at the beginning of the 20th century. (20세기 초에 자동차는 진귀한 물건이었다.)
Innovate(인노베이트)는 to start to use new ideas, methods, or inventions 로 정의되어 새로운 생각, 방법, 신발명품 등을 사용하기 시작하다 라는 뜻 즉, ‘혁신하다’ 라는 의미를 가지며, 그 명사형은 innovation(인노베이션: 혁신)이며, 그 형용사형은 innovative(인노베이티브: 혁신적인)이다. 예문: By innovating new software, Microsoft maintains its competitiveness in the market. (새로운 소프트웨어를 혁신함으로써 마이크로소프트사는 시장에서의 경쟁력을 유지한다.)
Neologism(니알러기즘)은 a new word or expression!, or a word with a new meaning으로 정의되어 ‘신조어’를 의미한다. 예문: In computer industry, numberous neologisms are invented every year. (컴퓨터 업계에서는 매년 수많은 신조어가 생겨난다.)
Neolithic(니오리씩)은 형용사로서 related to the latest period of the stone age about 10,000 years ago 로 정의되어 ‘신석기시대의’ 라는 의미를 가진다. 한편, paleolithic(팰리오리씩)은 ‘구석기시대의’ 라는 의미를 가진다. 예문: The Washington Post featured the discovery of a Neolithic burial mound in North Carolina. (워싱턴 포스트지는 노스캐롤라이나주의 신석기시대 매장지구릉 발견을 특집으로 다루었다.)
Neophyte(니오파이트)는 명사로서 a new member to a religiou group 으로 정의되어 어떤 종교의 ‘초신자’를 의미하거나, someone who has just started to learn a particular skill, art, trade, etc 로 정의되어 어떤 것을 처음 배우는 ‘초심자’를 의미한다. 예문: Richard Gere was a neophyte in Buddism when he first met Dalai Lama. (달라이라마를 처음 만났을 때 영화배우 리처드 기어는 불교의 초신자였다.)
Nouveau Riche(누보리쉬)는 명사로서 someone who has only recently become rich and spends a lot of money 로 정의되어 갑자기 부유하게 되면서 돈을 펑펑 쓰는 ‘벼락부자’ 를 의미한다. 예문: Mr. Kelly became a nouveau riche after hitting the lotto. (복권에 당첨되고 나서 켈리 씨는 벼락부자가 되었다.)
Renovate(레너베이트)는 동사로서 to repair and paint a building so that it is in good condition again 으로 정의되어 건물을 ‘개축하다’ 라는 의미를 가지며, 그 명사형은 renovation(레너베이션: 개축)이다. 예문: The Adams are living in temporary accommodation while their townhouse is being renovated. (아담스씨 가족은 자신들의 타운하우스가 개축되는 동안 임시숙소에서 살고 있다.)
