In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo, various explanations are provided to assist in understanding the goals, directions, as well as new perspectives and insights of the practice.
It's important in martial arts training to specify what goals are being pursued, what values are being pursued, and what direction one wants to develop.
These goals and directions can be enumerated concretely as follows:
1. Self-improvement and overcoming challenges:
The primary goal of martial arts is to improve oneself and overcome difficulties. It involves enhancing internal strength and physical and mental abilities, as well as strengthening the ability to cope with adversity.
This is called Grid, which is "Gyeokgi" (극기) in Korean.
2. Balance and harmony:
Martial arts seek not only physical skills but also mental harmony and balance. The aim is to maintain a balance between body and mind, and to achieve harmony between the external and internal. This can also be expressed as "Chusebueung" (추세부응), which means to adapting to trends and surroundings. This applies not only to martial arts training but also to everyday life and all aspects of the universe.
3. Transformation and innovation, growth and development:
It seeks comprehensive development encompassing various physical techniques and philosophical aspects. It involves encountering diverse ways of thinking and cultures from different areas such as tradition and modernity, East and West. Continuous growth is pursued through acquiring new knowledge and experiences.
It should be possible to use the extensive database and meta-language
practically and immediately, moment by moment.
Furthermore, when one can view things from various perspectives, it becomes possible to have complex combinations through understanding and acceptance of different things. The ability to appropriately manifest this as needed becomes one's current ability and level.
Therefore, based on such abilities, one can expect better changes, innovation, and growth.
4. Challenge and development:
Through a mindset of always wanting to acquire and an open mind towards challenges and failures in what one desires, one can frequently reflect on oneself and aim to develop into a better person through reflection, determination, and gratitude.
Through such continuous and repetitive processes, one overcomes difficulties and grows. This principle applies not only to martial arts training but also to all aspects of human society.
5. Courtesy, Ethics, and Respect
The goal is to prioritize respect, courtesy, ethics, and truthfulness through daily life, fostering an attitude of understanding and consideration for others. By basing actions on morality and a sense of responsibility, one grows into a socially mature individual. This creates individuals with proper character and allows for the pursuit of correct values through changes in consciousness throughout life.
This is why humans should possess culture, becoming law-abiding citizens who uphold societal laws, orders, and norms. It speaks to the path for both individuals and society as a whole to thrive.
Such correct martial arts training based on these goals and directions:
- Promotes personal growth and development
- Pursues societal values and benefits
- Benefits oneself, one's family, and society and the nation
Through this, Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu seeks to present new perspectives and understandings of martial arts, fostering growth into better martial artists and members of society.
Ultimately, all aspects of human society revolve under the same principles as the world does.
Recognizing this principle in a single stroke of the sword, one can understand the essence of healing.
It's only then that one can understand the essence of healing and begin the journey of learning it.
6. Sword with Ki
In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo,
there are three types of swords:
the killing sword(살인검, Salinkum) , the savior
sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum),
and the mind sword (심검,Simkum) .
The training is based on the fundamental principle
that the sword follows the body,
the body follows the mind,
and the mind follows the natural flow of energy.
It suggests that even a single stroke of the sword can discuss the philosophy of the sword and speak of the order of the universe. This indicates that the energy of the sword can be expressed through the body and mind, not just through reading, hearing, or understanding, but through bodily awareness, which is accessible to anyone.
Even if one reads excellent scriptures, translates them over many years, and possesses high knowledge and intellect, it is irrelevant if it does not connect with this principle. The flow of energy underlies even a single stroke of the sword, enabling philosophical discourse.
The "philosophy of martial arts" is the essence of the martial artist's life. Finding it oneself, learning it oneself, and realizing it oneself is the "learning of martial arts."
Simply memorizing martial arts techniques and repeating them can build physical strength, but over time, these physical aspects will eventually deteriorate.
However, proper martial arts learning, according to the principles of nature, leads to health and happiness, physical and mental strength, and the maintenance of a sound mind and body for a long time.
The sword with Ki can be explained in two ways: the killing sword(살인검, Salinkum) and the savior sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum)
The killing sword(살인검, Salinkum) indeed refers to a sword that kills people, while the savior sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum) refers to a sword that saves people. The mind sword (심검,Simkum) is a sword in which the mind is planted, and literally, "심" (sim) represents the mind, and "검" (Kum) represents a sword. Therefore, the mind sword signifies the sword of the mind.
In the term 'Hwalrinkum,' 'Hwal' signifies vitality or energy breathed into life, while 'In' means a person. Therefore, 'Hwalrinkumm' implies a sword that revitalizes or saves people.
The killing sword(살인검, Salinkum) is about overpowering and eliminating opponents. Its training requires physical enhancement, with the basics being strength reduction(힘빼기,muscle relaxation) and continuous training for repeated improvement of techniques.
Accumulating Ki in the sword and harnessing Ki require a strong and flexible body to contain them, which takes time. Even without understanding Energy Flow, individuals can demonstrate it through their efforts to strengthen and reinforce their bodies.
Thus, the overall muscles and joints of the body must be strong to accumulate stronger Ki.
the savior sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum) is directly connected to the mind sword. From the perspective of the sword and Ki, one must recognize where the energy goes and how it operates.
Understanding the savior sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum) through sword training allows one to move with the energy of the mind, benefiting oneself and others, which is Love.
Recognizing the flow of energy, whether using the sword or not, allows one to perceive the essence of the energy that moves according to the mind. Through repeated training and accumulation of energy, one gains the ability to benefit oneself and others.
This is the essence of the savior sword(활인검, Hwalrinkum) .
At that point, while training with the long sword continues, one can also begin studying how to heal others using a very short and thin needle-like sword. Again, this requires a considerable amount of time.
