■ The True Meaning and Final Destination of Martial Arts Training
Where Are You Really Headed?

1. The Essence of Martial Arts Training- Not Experience,
but the Realization of Principle

Martial arts training does not deepen simply because time passes.

Neither high ranks nor an impressive résumé truly represent the depth of one’s practice.

True training is a journey taken with clarity— knowing both the starting point and the final destination.

○ Starting Point
Becoming aware of the fundamental Energy Flow that governs all movement.

○ Final Destination
The ultimate goal of martial arts—
which is inseparable from the ultimate direction of human life itself.

That is why understanding the basic principle is essential.

In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu,

we often refer to *Dongyi martial arts, the ancient Korean proto-martial tradition, not out of nostalgia, but because it offers a clear example of this fundamental principle.

2. Seven Insights Gained Through Energy Flow

When the basic principle is practiced repeatedly and the flow of energy is embodied, profound inner changes naturally occur.

○ Insight – The ability to see through phenomena
○ Attitude – A genuine desire to understand, supported by an open mind
○Humility – The ability to lower oneself without force
○ Understanding Others – Deeper reflection and empathy
○ Self-Respect – No longer comparing oneself to others
○ Principle – A true grasp of Follow the Energy
○ Integration – The realization that technique, philosophy, and healing (medicine) are fundamentally one

3. The Trap of “Illusion”

“Do not pretend to know” really means
“Do not mistake assumption for understanding.”

Others already see your level clearly.
They simply choose not to say anything.

Without even a basic understanding of principle, martial arts training is easily reduced to nothing more than fighting to win.

○ Obsession with Form

In Haedong Kumdo especially, practitioners often fixate on sword techniques, cutting forms, or sword dances.

Yet these skills depend entirely on the physical body. As the body inevitably ages, they fade—and the aging process itself becomes increasingly painful and exhausting.

○ The Business Trap

In many cases, the focus shifts away from depth and maturity toward expanding organizations and commercial influence.

Under the label of “short-term instructor certification,” some pay $5,000–$6,000 to obtain high-rank instructor titles.

Such credentials may satisfy ego or boost confidence, but they have nothing to do with the core of training,
nor with the destination one must reach in life.

Finally, spending a large amount of money to do so is nothing more than self-satisfaction, self-indulgence, and the gratification of one’s ego.

○ Comfort and Complacency

As years pass, instructors and students alike often value familiarity—
personal bonds, loyalty, and shared time— more than genuine inquiry into the quality of their art.

As a result, the decline in depth is quietly ignored. Training becomes increasingly shallow,
yet those involved neither recognize it nor wish to.

4. The Virtue of a True Instructor
And the Necessity of Self-Reflection

A true martial arts instructor must continuously teach and learn.
Without the fundamental principle repeatedly emphasized here,
it is impossible to elevate one’s skill to a new dimension.

If someone has practiced Haedong Kumdo for 20 or 30 years
yet cannot clearly explain—or has misunderstood—the foot positions of Jayeonse or Daedose,
serious self-reflection is required.

Human beings are designed to evolve.
We constantly stand at the edge of time, facing choices.

Remain on a familiar path?
Or step, uncomfortably, into deeper territory?

No one can make this choice for you.

○ The Cage Metaphor

A bird confined to a cage knows nothing of the world outside.
But a bird that has flown beyond the cage never returns to it.

Martial arts training is the same.
Once you truly understand the basics
and experience genuine flow,
you cannot return to superficial practice.

5. Closing Thoughts

Martial arts training is not about endlessly accumulating techniques.
It is about seeing both the beginning and the end.

The beginning is awareness of Energy Flow.
The end transcends martial arts and leads directly into the direction of life itself.

So ask yourself:
Are you staying inside a familiar cage,
comfortably praising one another?

Or are you willing to step outside—
even if it feels uncomfortable—
and walk the true path of martial arts?

This essay is not meant to persuade.
It exists to invite honest questions—
so that each reader may arrive at their own answers.

○ Final Questions

Are you resting comfortably inside a familiar cage?

Or are you prepared to endure discomfort in order to walk the authentic path of martial arts?

■ Personal Note
It is a quiet Sunday morning.
The sunlight over Oryukdo pours out enough energy to charge the entire day.

I took a brief moment
to write down these thoughts as they came to me.

■ Reference:
Dongyi Martial Arts (東夷武藝) refers to the proto-martial traditions of ancient Korea during the prehistoric and early antiquity periods, formed prior to later China-centered textual systems.

Rather than focusing on combat techniques alone, Dongyi martial arts represent an integrated system of life, practice, and martial movement, in which bodily motion, awareness of natural rhythm, and sensitivity to Energy Flow are inseparable.

At its core, Dongyi martial arts emphasize not victory over others, but the restoration of harmony between the human body and the rhythms of nature.

This perspective reflects a foundational way of thinking about martial arts that predates later institutionalized and militarized forms.
