베르디의 오페라 <나부코> 가운데 '히브리 노예들의 합창'입니다.
19세기 말 이탈리아가 오스트리아, 프랑스의 간섭을 물리치고 독립과 통일을 쟁취하던 시절, 이탈리아 사람들의 민족적 여망을 대변한 노래이기도 합니다.
오페라 자체는 구약 성경에 나오는 유대 민족의 수난사, 즉 기원전 6세기 유대민족이 바빌론 제국에 정복당하고 끌려간 '바빌론 유수'를 배경으로 한 것입니다.
