About 20 kilometers from Batalhal, we arrived at Patima, the village where the Virgin Mary appeared. Named after a 12th-century Moorish princess, it has been the world's largest Marian shrine since 1917, attracting thousands of pilgrims each year.
On May 13, 1917, during the height of World War I, three shepherd children—ten-year-old Lucia dos Santos, her seven-year-old cousin Francisco, and nine-year-old Jacinta Marta—were tending their sheep in a field near Fátima when they saw a light appear in an oak tree and a woman appear. This woman was the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary appeared to them and told them to pray for the conversion of sinners and for an end to the war. She said she would come down from heaven on the 13th of every month for the next five months and return to this place. She continued to appear on June 13th and July 13th. On August 13th, the children were arrested by the authorities, who accused them of lying about their apparitions, and the next day, the apparition occurred. On September 13th, she instructed them to pray the Rosary for the end of the war. She identified herself as the "Queen of the Rosary" and urged them to continue praying and making penance. The Virgin Mary gave the children three revelations, including a terrifying vision of hell and a prophecy foretelling the outbreak of World War II and the collapse of Soviet communism. The third and final revelation was secretly transmitted to Pope John XXIII by Lucia. On October 13th, the final day, a crowd of some 70,000 gathered to witness the "miraculous appearance of the sun" that occurred immediately after the Virgin Mary appeared to the three children. The children's visions were officially recognized on October 13th, 1930. After a lengthy investigation and review, the Bishop of Leiria authorized the cult of Our Lady of the Rosary in the Cova da Iria. Shortly after the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, both children died: Francisco, who saw the apparitions but did not hear the words, died on April 4, 1919, and his sister Jacinta died on February 20, 1920 (both children were weak and died of pneumonia). The only survivor, Lucia, became a nun and lived in a convent near Fatima; this Sr. Lucia dos Santos died at the age of 97 in the Carmelite convent in Coimbra on February 13, 2005. The first nationwide pilgrimage to Fatima began in 1927. Construction of the basilica began in 1928, and its dedication took place in 1953. A 65-meter-tall tower crowns a massive bronze crown and crystal cross. The church is flanked by a hospital and a retreat house, and in front is a large plaza with a small chapel of the Virgin Mary's apparitions. Many miraculous healings have been reported, but none are officially recognized.
The Fatima guidebook provided by the Information Desk is not available in Korean. Given that the Catholic Church in Korea is larger than in China or Japan and the number of tourists is likely greater, I found it odd that Chinese and Japanese versions were available.

| 31)3월29일(목) 성지 순례 Nazare-Batalha-Fatima-Conimbriga-Coimbra-Porto(U) Batalhal에서 20여 Km 가니 성모 마리아가 출현한 마을 파티마에 도착하였다. 12세기에 무어 공주의 이름을 따서 명명된 마을로, 1917년 이래 세계적으로 가장 큰 성모 마리아 성지가 되어 해마다 수천 명의 순례자들이 방문하고 있는 마을이다. 1917년 제 1차 세계대전이 한참이던 5월 13일, 파티마 근처의 코바 다 이리아(Cova da Iria)에 있는 한 들판에서 양치기 목동인 세 어린이인 10살의 루치아 도스 산또스(Lucia dos Santos)와 그녀의 사촌동생 프란치스꼬(Francisco 7살), 그리고 히야친따 마르타(Jacinta Marta 9세)는 양들을 돌보던중 떡깔나무에 한 줄기 빛이 보이면서 한 여인이 나타나는 것을 보았다. 이 여인이 곧 성모 마리아 였다. 성모 마리아는 이들에게 나타나 죄인들의 회개를 위해 그리고, 전쟁의 종식을 위해 기도 하라고 이르시면서앞으로 5개월 동안에 매월 13일에 하늘에서 내려와 다시 이 곳으로 돌아오겠다고 말하였다. 그 후, 6월 13일, 7월 13일에도 계속해서 발현하였다. 8월 13일에는 이 어린이들의 성모 발현을 거짓말이라고 하여 관헌들에 붙잡히는 바람에 이들이 풀려난 다음 날 발현하였다 한다., 9월 13일에는 전쟁이 끝나도록 로사리오를 바치라고 이르셨다. 성모님께서는 당신을 "로사리오의 모후"라고 알려 주시고, 계속하여 기도하고 보속하라고 이르셨다. 성모 마리아는 이들 어린이에게 무서운 지옥에 대한 비젼과 2차대전의 발발과 소련 공산주의의 몰락을 예언하는 세가지의 계시를 전하였으며, 마지막 세번째 계시는 루치아에 의해 비밀리에 교황 요한23세에게 전달되었다. 마지막 10월 13일에는 이 소식을 들은 7만 여명의 군중들이 운집하여 성모 마리아가 세 어린이에게 나타난 직후 일어난 '기적적인 태양의 현상'을 목격했다. 어린이들이 목격한 환시를 공식적으로 인정한 것은 1930년 10월 13일 이였다. 이에 대해 레이리아의 주교는 오랜동안 조사와 검토를 한 뒤에 코바 다 이리아에서 로사리오의 성모 공경을 허가했던 것이다. 성모 마리아의 발현 얼마 뒤에 두 어린이는 선종하였는데, 성모님의 발현은 보았으나 말씀은 듣지 못했던 프란치스코는 1919년 4월 4일에 선종했고, 동생 히야친타는 1920년 2월 20일에 하느님 품에 안겼다.(두 어린이는 몸이 허약했으머, 폐렴으로 하나님 품에 안겼다.) 유일한 생존자인 루치아는 수녀가 되어 파티마 인근에 있는 수녀원에서 살았으며, 이 루치아 도스 산토스 수녀는 코임브라에 있는 가르멜 수녀원에서 2005년 2월 13일 97살의 나이로 선종하였다. 전국적인 규모의 파티마 성지순례는 1927년에 처음 이루어졌다. 1928년에 바실리카가 건축되기 시작했고, 1953년에 봉헌식이 거행되었다. 65m 높이의 탑 위에 거대한 청동 왕관과 수정 십자가가 있으며, 교회당의 양측면에는 병원과 피정(避靜)의 집이 있고, 정면에는 작은 성모 마리아 출현 예배당이 있는 거대한 광장이 있다. 기적적인 치유사건이 많이 보고되었지만 공식적으로 알려진 것은 없다.
