LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The music world was mourning the death of Whitney
Houston at age 48, while Grammy Awards producers worked today to put together a
tribute to the mercurial singer for tonight's awards show.
Houston, in town for the Grammys, was staying at the Beverly Hilton and
found unresponsive in a bathtub and declared dead at 3:55 p.m. Saturday. While
the singer had battled cocaine addiction, there was no word on whether drugs
played a role in her death. Some prescription pill bottles were found in the
fourth-floor room, TMZ.com reported, but sources told the website there was no
evidence the six-time Grammy winner had been drinking alcohol.
Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen said a member of Houston's entourage
made an emergency call at 3:43 p.m., with Houston's body remaining on site
several hours until it was turned over to coroner's investigators for an
autopsy.
According to some reports, Houston may have drowned.
Toxicology tests can take up to a month sometimes. It was unclear when
the gross autopsy would be done, but it could happen as soon as today.
As news of Houston's death spread, people flocked to the hotel, and
tributes poured in from musicians far and wide, most of whom are in town for
the Grammys.
Dolly Parton wrote Houston's biggest hit, ``I Will Always Love You.''
``I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she
did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, 'Whitney, I

Aretha Franklin, Houston's godmother said: ``It's so stunning and

She had been set to perform a legendary producer Clive Davis' annual pre-
Grammy party Saturday night. According to some reports, she was sweating
profusely at the rehearsal, and some people said she was acting a little
unusual around the hotel, doing handstands by the pool at one point.
L.L. Cool J remarked that ``we all gotta go, but not at that age.''
Her mother reportedly talked with her by telephone about a half-hour
before she died and said nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Houston was born Whitney Elizabeth Aug. 9 in Newark, N.J., the third and
youngest child of Army serviceman and entertainment executive John Russell
Houston, Jr. and gospel singer Cissy Houston.
Her mother, along with cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick and
godmother Aretha Franklin were all notable figures in the gospel, R&B and
blues, pop, and soul genres.
After the 1967 Newark riots, the family moved to East Orange when she
was four. About age 11, Houston started tagging along with her mother at clubs
and singing in a junior gospel choir at church, where she learned to play piano
about age 14.
Though raised Baptist, she attended the Roman Catholic girls school
Mount Saint Dominic Academy, where she met best friend Robyn Crawford. Among
her influences then, according to her mother, were Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight
and Roberta Flack.
At 14, she sang backup on the Michael Zager Band's single ``Life's a
Party," and Zager offered to help get her a record contract, but her mother
wanted her to finish school.
The next year, she sang backup on Chaka Khan's hit ``I'm Every Woman," a
song she would later record on her mega-hit ``The Bodyguard'' soundtrack. She
also sang on albums by Lou Rawls and Jermaine Jackson.
After being spotted singing with her mother at Carnegie Hall, the
natural beauty starting working as a fashion model in the 80s, become one of
the first black women to be featured on the cover of Seventeen. She would also
do Canada Dry television commercial.
In 1983, Arista artist-and-repertoire man Gerry Griffith saw her perform
with her mother in New York City and persuaded Arista chief Clive Davis to
see her. He did and offered her worldwide recording contract. Houston signed
it, appearing alongside Davis on ``The Merv Griffin Show'' that same year.
Davis groomed her, first recording a duet with Teddy Pendergrass called
``Hold Me," a single released in 1984 that became a Top 5 R&B hit. The song was
included on her debut album ``Whitney Houston'' in 1985.
Critics were won over without reservation. The soulful ballad ``You Give
Good Love" was the album's first single. The album sold briskly -- eventually
selling 25 million copies. The final single, "Greatest Love of All," became
Houston's biggest hit at the time and she set out on a worldwide tour under
that banner.
At the 1986 Grammys, she was up for three awards and won for best female
pop vocal performance for ``Saving All My Love for You.'' She sang it at the
show and won an Emmy for the performance.
Rolling Stone put her debut album on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums
of All Time,
Her next album, ``Whitney,'' was released in 1987, and Houston became
the first female artist debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the
first to enter the chart at No. 1 in the United States and Britain. ``I Wanna
Dance With Somebody'' was a huge hit worldwide. The album eventually sold about
20 million copies worldwide.
At the 1988 Grammys, she won for best female pop vocals on ``I Wanna
Dance With Somebody,'' and she launched her Moment of Truth World Tour, which
became one of the top 10 grossing tours in 1987. Forbes ranked her as the
eighth highest-earning entertainer. Among black entertainers, only Bill Cosby
and Eddie Murphy made more money at the time.
The anti-Apartheid activist joined like-minded musicians at London's
Wembley Stadium that year for then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday,
playing before a crowd of 72,000 and more than a billion people via
television.
Because of her wide appeal, Houston took some flack from black critics
who accused her of selling out in the late 80s. But at the 1989 Soul Train
Music Awards, she responded to some hecklers by saying: ``If you're gonna have
a long career, there's a certain way to do it, and I did it that way. I'm not
ashamed of it."
Her third studio album ``I'm Your Baby Tonight'' was released in 1990,
with L.A. Reid, Babyface, Luther Vandross, and Stevie Wonder pitching in.
Rolling Stone called it her ``best and most integrated album."
During the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Houston sang ``The Star Spangled
Banner" at Super Bowl XXV and it was released as a single -- the first time the
national anthem had climbed so high on the charts since Jose Feliciano's
version hit No. 50 in 1968. Proceeds went to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis
Fund, and Houston was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors.
Houston's career likely peaked with ``The Bodyguard'' in 1992, playing a
star in distress opposite Kevin Costner. Though she nominated for a Razzie
for worst performance and the movie was panned, it grossed $121 million in the
United States, ranking at the time as one of the top 100 grossing films ever.
The Dolly Parton-written ``I Will Always Love You'' became her signature
song. It was on the Billboard Hot 100 for a then-record-breaking 14 weeks,
No. 1 the R&B chart for a then-record-breaking 11 weeks, and number one on the
Adult Contemporary charts for five weeks, becoming the first single to top all
three charts at the same time. As a single, it sold 12 million copies.
Houston met Bobby Brown at the 1989 Soul Train awards. The two married
in 1992 and, about a year later,
Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown was born. She is her only child.
In 1994, Houston performed at a White House dinner for Mandela, then the
president of South Africa.
In 1995, Houston starred with Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela
Rochon in her second film, ``Waiting to Exhale.'' The next year, she starred in
the holiday comedy ``The Preacher's Wife,'' with Denzel Washington.
In 2000, she and Brown were caught with pot at a Hawaii airport as her
behavior gave rise to rumors she was using drugs. Two months later, when Clive
Davis was to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Houston was set
to perform, she failed to show up. She was later to perform at the Academy
Awards but was fired by musical director Burt Bacharach.
In 2001, Houston signed a $100 million record deal with Arista/BMG, the
biggest contract ever at the time. She appeared so thin while performing on
``Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special'' that rumors of drug use gained
momentum.
In a 2002 interview by Diane Sawyer, Houston was frank about her drug use.
``First of all, let's get one thing straight. Crack is cheap. I make too
much money to ever smoke crack. Let's get that straight. OK? We don't do
crack. We don't do that. Crack is wack."
In 2004, Brown starred in the reality TV show ``Being Bobby Brown,''
which provided a peek into the couple's lives. The Hollywood Reporter called it
``undoubtedly the most disgusting and execrable series ever to ooze its way
onto television."
Houston separated from Brown in September 2006, filing for divorce the
next month. It was finalized the next year, giving Houston custody of their
daughter. She would later talk about the break-up on ``Oprah.''
By the spring of 2011, Houston was in an addiction treatment center for

BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - Pop star Whitney Houston had been dripping sweat
and acting erratically in the hours leading up to her death, and her lifeless
body was found underwater in a Beverly Hilton hotel bathtub by her hairdresser,
according to media reports today.
The Los Angeles Times said reporters noticed Houston in the hotel
Saturday afternoon because of ``erratic behavior, dripping sweat and disheveled
clothes.''
TMZ.com reported that the one-time superstar was found in a hotel
bathroom by her hairdresser, with her head below water and legs sticking up in
the air ``like she had slide down the back of the tub.''
The website's reporters said Houston had earlier decamped to her hotel
room to prepare for the party, and had been in the bathroom for an hour when
the female hairdresser went inside to check on her.
The hairdresser screamed, bodyguards rushed in, and Houyston's body was

BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - The daughter of Whitney Houston collapsed at the
Beverly Hilton today and was taken by paramedics to a hospital, several news
agencies reported today.
Beverly Hills firefighters told City News Service that they were called
to a report of a seizure at the hotel at 10:30 a.m. today. They confirm that
Bobbi Kristina Brown was taken on a gurney from the hotel where her mother had
died.
The young woman was taken about two miles across Beverly Hills and Los
Angeles to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The hospital refused comment about
their patient, whose age has been variously described as 18 or 19.
Bobbi Kristina Brown was reportedly performing in the South and rushed
to Los Angeles on learning of her mother';s death. Whitney Houston's remains
had been transferred to the coroner's office in Los Angeles by this morning.
News of the daughter's emotional collapse was first reported by TMZ and
CNN.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Although an autopsy reportedly was conducted on
Whitney Houston today, no details are to be released due to a security hold
placed by the Beverly Hills Police Department, a coroner's spokesman said.
The security hold means that ``nothing is being released at this time,''
John Kades of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said.
Ed Winter of the coroner's office told a crowd of reporters a cause of
Houston's death has not been determined and toxicology reports remained
pending.
``We're looking at all aspects of the case,'' Winter said. ``Hopefully,
maybe, by Wednesday or Thursday this next week I can give you another update,
but there won't be anything else this evening or probably tomorrow or the next
day.''
A Beverly Hills police official said the department has no plans to
release any information regarding the case today.
``We had a security hold on Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy, Corey Haim
-- all high profile cases,'' Winter said. ``A lot of times on in-custody or
officer-involved shooting cases or high profile murder cases we'll put security
holds to give the law enforcement agency a chance to do further investigation,
so it's not uncommon.''
Houston died Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel at age 48.
