"Desiderata"는 요한 바오로 2세 전 교황께서 당신의 집무실에 걸어 놓고 늘 보셨다는 시입니다. "Desiderata"는 라틴어 desideratum 의 복수명사로 우리에게 꼭 필요하거나 절실히 요구되는 것을 뜻하는 단어입니다
세상의 소란함과 서두름 속에서 너의 평온을 잃지 말라. 침묵 속에 어떤 평화가 있는지 기억하라. 너 자신을 포기하지 않고서도 가능한 한 모든 사람과 좋은 관계를 유지하라. 네가 알고 있는 진리를 조용히 그리고 분명하게 말하라. 다른 사람의 얘기가 지루하고 무지한 것일지라도 그것을 들어 주라. 그들 역시 자신들만의 이야기를 갖고 있으므로. 소란하고 공격적인 사람을 피하라. 그들은 정신에 방해가 될 뿐이니까. 만일 너 자신을 남과 비교한다면 너는 무의미하고 괴로운 인생을 살 것이다. 세상에는 너보다 낫고 너보다 못한 사람들이 언제나 있기 마련이니까. 네가 세운 계획 뿐만 아니라 네가 성취한 것에 대해서도 기뻐하라. 네가 하는 일이 아무리 보잘 것 없는 것일지라도 그 일에 열정을 쏟으라. 변화하는 시간의 흐름 속에서 그것이 진정한 재산이므로. 세상의 속임수에 조심하되 그것이 너를 장님으로 만들어 무엇이 덕인가를 못 보게 하지는 말라. 많은 사람들이 높은 이상을 위해 노력하고 있고 모든 곳에서 삶은 영웅주의로 가득하다. 하지만 너는 너 자신이 되도록 힘쓰라. 특히 사랑을 꾸미지 말고 사랑에 냉소적이지도 말라. 왜냐하면 모든 무미건조하고 덧없는 것들 속에서 사랑은 풀잎처럼 영원한 것이니까. 나이 든 사람의 조언을 친절히 받아들이고 젊은이들의 말에 기품을 갖고 따르라. 갑작스런 불행에 자신을 지킬 수 있도록 정신의 힘을 키우라. 하지만 상상의 고통들로 너 자신을 고통스럽게 하지는 말라. 두려움은 피로와 외로움 속에서 나온다. 건강에 조심하되 무엇보다 너 자신을 괴롭히지 말라. 너는 우주의 자식이다. 그 점에선 나무와 별들과 다르지 않다. 넌 이곳에 있을 권리가 있다. 너의 일과 계획이 무엇일지라도 인생의 소란함과 혼란스러움 속에서 너의 영혼을 평화롭게 유지하라. 부끄럽고, 힘들고, 깨어진 꿈들 속에서도 아직 아름다운 세상이다. 즐겁게 살라. 행복하려고 노력하라 ***** Desiderata/by Max Ehrmann Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
