 전술 배치 軍形 군형 Tactical Dispositions 孫子曰：昔之善戰者，先為不可勝，以待敵之可勝，不可勝在己，可勝在敵。故善戰者，能為不可勝，不能使敵必可勝。故曰：勝可知，而不可為。 손자왈 석지선전자 선위불가승 이대적지가승 불가승재기 가승재적 고선전자 능위불가승 불능사적필가승 고왈 승가지 이불가위 손자는 말했다: 예로부터 잘 싸우는 자는 먼저 적이 이기지 못 하도록 조치한 뒤에 적에게 이길 것을 기다린다. 적이 이기지 못 하는 까닭은 나에게 있는 것이고 적을 이기는 까닭은 적에게 있는 것이다. 그러므로 잘 싸우는 자는 적이 이기지 못 하도록 할 수 있지만 적을 반드시 이긴다고 할 수는 없는 것이다. 그러므로 싸워서 이길 것을 알아도 무리하게 싸우지 않는 수가 있는 것이다.
Sunzi said: The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy. To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the pportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy. Hence the saying: One may know how to conquer without being able to do it. (다른 영문 번역을 보면 Therefore it is said one may know how to win but cannot necessarily do it) 不可勝者，守也；可勝者，攻也。守則不足，攻則有餘。善守者，藏于九地之下；善攻者，動于九天之上，故能自保而全勝也。 불가승자 수야 가승자 공야 수즉부족 공즉유여 선수자 장우구지지하 선공자 동우구천지상 고능자보이전승야 九地: 땅의 가장 낮은 곳 九天: 하늘의 가장 높은 곳 이길 수 없다면 지키는 것이다. 이길 수 있으면 치는 것이다. 지키는 까닭은 [유리한 조건이] 부족한 탓이요 치는 것은 [유리한 조건이] 넘치는 덕분이다. 잘 방어하는 것은 가장 깊은 땅에 숨는 것과 같고 잘 공격하는 것은 가장 높은 하늘에서 움직이는 것과 같다. 그러므로 능히 스스로 지킬 수 있고 완전하게 승리할 수 있는 것이다.
Security against defeat implies defensive tactics; ability to defeat the enemy means taking the offensive. Standing on the defensive indicates insufficient strength; attacking, a superabundance of strength. The general who is skilled in defense hides in the most secret recesses of the earth; he who is skilled in attack flashes forth from the topmost heights of heaven. Thus on the one hand we have ability to protect ourselves; on the other, a victory that is complete. 見勝，不過眾人之所知，非善之善者也。戰勝，而天下曰善，非善之善者也。故舉秋毫，不為多力；見日月，不為明目；聞雷霆，不為聰耳。古之善戰者，勝于易勝者也；故善戰者之勝也，無智名，無勇功。故其戰勝不忒，不忒者，其措必勝，勝已敗者也。故善戰者，立于不敗之地，而不失敵之敗也。是故勝兵先勝，而後求戰；敗兵先戰，而後求勝。 견승 불과중인지소지 비선지선자야 전승 이천하왈선 비선지선자야 고거추호 불위다력 견일월 불위명목 문뇌정 불위총이 고지선전자 승우이승자야 고선전자지승야 무지명 무용공 고기전승불특 불특자 기치필승 승이패자야 고선전자 입우불패지지 이불실적지패야 시고승병선승 이후구전 패병선전 이후구승 霆 천둥 소리 정 많은 사람이 알고 있는 것을 벗어나지 않는 승리는 최선이 아니다. 잘 싸웠다고 천하 모두가 칭송하는 승리도 역시 최선이 아니다. 그러므로 털 한 올 들 수 있다고 힘이 세다 하지 않는 법이요 해와 달을 볼 수 있다고 눈이 밝다 하지 않는 법이요 천둥 소리를 들을 수 있다고 귀가 밝다 하지 않는 법이다. 예로부터 잘 싸우는 자는 싸워서 쉽게 이기는 듯이 보이는 것이다. 그러므로 잘 싸우는 자의 승리는 지혜롭다는 명성도 용감하게 공을 세웠다는 칭송도 없는 것이다. 그 승리란 틀림이 없는 것이며 틀림이 없는 것은 그 하는대로 반드시 이기는 것이니 싸우기도 전에 이미 패전한 적에게 이기는 셈이다. 그러므로 잘 싸우는 자는 지지 않을 위치를 확보하여 적의 패착을 놓치지 않는 것이다. 그러므로 싸움에 이기는 자는 이미 이겨놓은 뒤에 싸우는 것이고 싸움에 지는 자는 일단 싸워보고 요행히 이겨 볼까 하는 것이다.
To see victory only when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence. Neither is it the acme of excellence if you fight and conquer and the whole Empire says, "Well done!" To lift an autumn hair is no sign of great strength; to see the sun and moon is no sign of sharp sight; to hear the noise of thunder is no sign of a quick ear. What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease. Hence his victories bring him neither reputation for wisdom nor credit for courage. He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated. Hence the skillful fighter puts himself into a position which makes defeat impossible, and does not miss the moment for defeating the enemy. Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory. 善用兵者，修道而保法，故能為勝敗之政。兵法：“一曰度，二曰量，三曰數，四曰稱，五曰勝；地生度，度生量，量生數，數生稱，稱生勝。”故勝兵若以鎰稱銖，敗兵若以銖稱鎰。勝者之戰，若決積水于千仞之谿，形也。 선용병자 수도이보법 고능위승패지정 병법 일왈도 이왈량 삼왈수 사왈칭 오왈승 지생도 도생량 양생수 수생칭 칭생승 고승병약이일칭수 패병약일수칭일 승자지전 약결우적수우천인지계 형야 鎰 24냥 일 銖 24분의 1냥 수 仞 길 인 잘 싸우는 자는 도를 갈고 닦고 법을 지키므로 승패를 지배할 수 있는 것이다. 병법에 첫째 지형 분석(度), 둘째 물량 계산(量), 셋째 병력 계산(數), 네째 피아彼我 비교(稱), 다섯째 승리 예측(勝)이라 했다. 지형을 분석하고, 투입할 물량을 가늠한다. 이 결과 병력 수가 계산된다. 그리고 이것들로 적군과 비교한다. 이러고나서야 승리할 수 있는 것이다. 그러므로 이기는 군대는 바위로 자갈을 치는 기세고 지는 군대는 자갈로 바위를 치는 격이다. 이기는 싸움이란 마치 쌓아 놓은 물을 일시에 터뜨려서 천길 아래 계곡에 쏟아붓듯이 맹렬한 형세다. The consummate leader cultivates the moral law, and strictly adheres to method and discipline; thus it is in his power to control success. In respect of military method, we have, firstly, Measurement; secondly, Estimation of quantity; thirdly, Calculation; fourthly, Balancing of chances; fifthly, Victory. Measurement owes its existence to Earth; Estimation of quantity to Measurement; Calculation to Estimation of quantity; Balancing of chances to Calculation; and Victory to Balancing of chances. A victorious army opposed to a routed one, is as a pound's weight placed in the scale against a single grain. The onrush of a conquering force is like the bursting of pent-up waters into a chasm a thousand fathoms deep. |
