2,000 Babies Left at His Doorstep: The 71-Year-Old Pastor
behind Koreas First Baby Box
On a quiet side street in Seoul, theres a small box built into the wall of a small building.
It stays warm and lit around the clock. A parent can open it, leave a newborn inside,
and walk away without ever giving a name.
Its called the Baby Box, and a pastor named Lee Jong-rak built it in 2009.
In this episode of the Korean Next Door documentary,
we spent a day with him to see the legacy he has built.
More than 2,210 babies have been left in that box over the years - and that was only the beginning.
Many of the children have disabilities, and instead of sending them on,
Pastor Lee raised them as his own and opened a care facility to look after them.
For the mothers - many of them young, unwed, or with nowhere to turn -
he built a shelter where they could stay, get back on their feet, and not be found.
But the real question is why. Why would one man give his whole life to this?
The answer goes back further than the Baby Box itself.
