Gardai have issued an urgent warning to Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Bank (AIB) customers over a new smishing scam doing the rounds.

Fraudsters are texting members of the public, pretending to be from AIB and Bank of Ireland, and telling them their bank card has been compromised.

The messages request the individual to click a link to review or block a fraudulent transaction on their account in an attempt by scammers to obtain sensitive information or data.

Gardaí are reminding people that your bank will never message you in this way. People are further advised to never click a link in an unsolicited text and to never give away personal data like PINs, card numbers and passwords.

A garda spokesperson said: "Be Alert to ongoing scams. Gardaí continue to advise people in relation to ongoing text message scams: "Never click a link in an unsolicited text.

"Never give away personal data like your PIN, card numbers and passwords.

"Your Bank will never text and ask you to click on a link."

"If in doubt, ring your financial institution on a recognised number. If you have been a victim of such scam, report it to An Garda Síochána."
