The Sedlec Ossuary (kostnice Sedlec) a small Christian chapel,
is located beneath the Church of All Saints (Hřbitovní kostel Všech Svatých) in Sedlec,
a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic.
The ossuary of the "Bone Church,"
as it is popularly known, contains approximately 40,000 human skeletons
which have been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.
이러한 해골 교회가 체코에만 있는 것은 아니다.
체코에 있던 이 교회는 가장 화려하고 규모가 커서 UNESCO 문화 유산으로까지 지정되어 있었고,
유럽의 다른 지역에도 이와 비슷한 교회가 있다고 한다.
이러한 해골 교회들을 만드는 것이 한 교리(?)라고 하는데,
교회를 이런 식으로 만듦으로
'하나님 앞에서 빛을 발하는 자 없다', '죽음 앞에서는 만인이 평등하다'
등의 의미를 전달하려 했다고 한다.

A 13th Century Abbot brought soil back from Golgotha and sprinkled it over the Ossuary graveyard,
spurring a belief that if one was buried here, their body decomposed to dust in three days.
In the 1500’s, bodies had been dug up due to over-crowding.
It is said that a bored, half-blind monk decided to do something constructive
with the stacked bones of 40,000 people around the Ossuary and used them for interior design.

The Schwarzenburg family bought the Ossuary in the 1700s
and commissioned a woodcarver to redecorate some more.
He added a coat-of-arms and a chandelier made from every bone in the human body.

Hanging outside one of the bell pyramids was the Schwarzenburg coat-of-arms.

Some of the designs have a touch of humour about them.

The chandelier was definitely impressive and worth seeing in real life,
although Gunter hogged my photo frame as he perfected his spiel underneath.

Schwarzenberg가의 문장.
보헤미안의 명문 귀족 가문으로 1918년까지 Český Krumlov에 거주했다고 한다.
교회장식에 쓰인 해골은 약 40,000명 분. 성인남자의 평균 뼈 수가 206개라고 하니,
대략 8,240,000개의 뼈가 있는 셈이다.
이들 대부분은 1318년의 흑사병과 1421년의 후스 전쟁에서 죽은 사람들이라고 한다.
하지만 그것을 어찌 알 수 있으랴. 이들은 교회 밖 묘지에 묻혔으나
16세기 묘지가 축소되면서 교회 안으로 옮겨졌다.
1870년 Schwarzenberg가에 고용된 Ceska Skalice 출신의 목수 František Rint가
이 해골들을 정리하는 일을 맡았다.
교회 안쪽 네 귀퉁이 종 모양으로 쌓아놓은 거대한 해골 더미,
교회 중앙에 있는 해골 샹들리에, 제단, Schwarzenberg가의 문장
그리고 입구에서 내려가는 계단 오른편에 남아 있는 그의 이름까지,
교회를 장식하고 있는 해골 작품이 그의 손을 거쳐 만들어졌다.
해골 교회는 짧은 인생을 상기시키기 위해 만들어졌다고 한다.
죽어서 해골이 된 육신을 보며 조화로운 인간관계를 위해 노력하고,
삶을 찬양하며, 자신의 책무를 되새기라는 것이다.
소위 말해 Memento Mori(죽음을 기억하라)로 대표되는
기독교 신앙의 일면을 보여주는 것일까?
