늙고 가난한 사람들은 얼마나 아름다운지 그들을 묘사하기에 적합한 말을 찾을 수가 없다 인물화가들과 거리를 산책하다가 한 사람에게 시선을 주고 있는데 그들은 '아, 저 지저분한 사람들 좀 봐' '저런 류의 인간들이란'하고 말하더구나 그런 표현을 화가한테서 듣게 되리라고는 상상도 못했지 그래 그런 일이 나를 생각에 잠기게 한다 그런 장면은 사람들이 가장 진지하고 가장 아름다운 것을 의도적으로 피하는 것이라 느껴졌다 (1883.3)

인물화나 풍경화에서 내가 표현하고 싶은 것은 감상적이고 우울한 것이 아니라 뿌리 깊은 고뇌다 다른 사람들 눈에는 내가 어떻게 비칠까? 보잘것없는 사람, 괴벽스러운 사람, 비위에 맞지 않는 사람 사회적 지위도 없고 앞으로도 어떤 사회적 지위를 갖지도 못할 한마디로 최하 중의 최하급 사람....그래 좋다 설령 그 말이 옳다 해도 언젠가는 내 작품을 통해 그런 기이한 사람 그런 보잘것없는 사람의 마음속에 무엇이 들어있는지를 보여주겠다 (1882.7)

특이한 화가 빈센트 고흐
아마 독특한 그의 마음을 이해하기는 어려울 거에요.
우리는 단지,, 그림을 보면서
그의 천재성을 느낄 수 밖에 없어요.
사람이 사람을 어찌 다 안다고 하겠어요?
단지 자기의 바램대로 이기를 바라는 것일 뿐?
사람이 어찌 물처럼 속이 다 보이겠어요?
아니 깊은 물 속은,,
맑아도 안보일 수도 있어요.

그래서 자기가 바라는대로
믿고 믿음으로써 행복을 갖는 겁니다.

만든 노래라는건 다 아시죠?
1972년 빌보드 차트 12위곡인 이노래를 반 고흐에게 바쳤다고 합니다.
1970년대 암스테르담에 위치한 반 고흐 박물관에서 이노래가 매일
연주되었고,반 고흐의 그림붓 세트와 함께 악보가 박물관
밑에 타임캡슐로 묻혔다고 합니다.
