프랭크 시나트라는 레이찰스야말로 이 시대 진정한 천재라고 칭송했다. 그가 태어 난 1930년부터 1966년 사이의 일대기를 영화화한 레이(Ray)에서 레이찰스역을 맡은 제이미 폭스(Jamie Foxx)는 2005년 아카데미 남우주연상을 받기도 했다. 2004년 10월 영화 개봉을 앞두고 레이는 끝내 그해 6월에 세상을 떠나고 말았지만 그의 행적은 영화와 음악으로 영원히 남아있다.
