폴 맥카트니가 만든 곡. 1968년 발매된 앨범(The White Album)에 수록된 곡으로 여러 나라에서 같은 해 싱글로 발매되었지만 미국에서는 1976년에 다시 싱글로 발매되었다. 원곡은 Bb, 1976년판은 A Major.

가사에 나오는 데스몬드는 당시 영국에서 유행하던 자메이카 레게 음악가 데스몬드 데커(Desmond Dekker)를 말한다.

"Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah"는 폴이 알고 있던 나이제리아의 콩가 연주가 지미 스콧이 입버릇처럼 말하는 표현으로 "뭐 그래, 인생은 흘러가는 거야" 라는 뜻이다. 지미 스콧의 밴드 이름도 Jimmy Scott and His Obladi Oblada Band로 지미 스콧은 뒤에

폴 매카트니에게 Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, brah는 자기 것이라 주장, 결국 폴 매카트니가 합의금을 주고 무마했다.

처음 폴 매카트니가 녹음을 위해 혼자 기타로 연습할 때는 느리게 했는데 존이 피아노를 강하게 그리고 빠르게 연주하면서 지금의 곡이 완성되었다 한다.
