타계한 美애플사의 창업주 Steve Jobs는 생전 스탠포드대학 졸업식에서 인생은 유한하니 타인의 삶을 사는데 시간을 낭비하지말 것을 충고했다 (Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life). CNN은 스티브 잡스의 통찰력이 깃든 명언 10가지를 George Beahm의 저서 "I, Steve: Steve Jobs in His Own Words"에서 추려 보도했다.
아래와 같이 잡스가 한 말들은 동양적 운문(韻文)이 아닌 서양의 실용주의적 산문(散文)이며 그가 표현한 의미는 심오(深奧)하다.
1. What a computer is to me is the most remarkable tool that we have ever come up with. It's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds. 컴퓨터는 놀랄만한 도구이다. 컴퓨터를 쓰면 인간의 사고는 마치 걷다가 자전거를 타는 것과 같아진다
2. I end up not buying a lot of things, because I find them ridiculous. 나는 물건을 많이 사지 않는데 이 물건들이 터무니없다는걸 알게되기 때문이다
3. I think death is the most wonderful invention of life. It purges the system of these old models that are obsolete. 죽음은 인생에서 가장 멋진 발명이라고 생각한다. 죽음은 쓸모없는 낡은 모델들의 시스템을 없앤다
4. People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things I have done. 5. Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful.That's what matters to me. 최고의 부자로 이름남는게 나에겐 의미 없다. 밤에 잠자리에 들며 대단한 일을 했다고 말하는것,그것이 중요하다
6. My job is not to be easy on people. My job is to make them better. 내 일은 사람들을 살살 다루는 것이 아니라 이들이 더 나아지도록 하는 것이다
7. If you want to live your life in a creative way as an artist, you have to not look back too much. You have to be willing to take whatever you've done and whoever you were and throw them away. 예술가로서 창조적으로 살려면 뒤를 너무 자주 돌아보지 말아야 한다. 당신이 한 일과 당신이 어떤 사람인지를 기꺼이 받아들이고 또 이것들을 던져버릴 수 있어야 한다
8. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. 혁신은 리더와 뒤따르는 자를 구별 짓는다
9. My model for business is the Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other's kind of negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other, and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That's how I see business. Great things in business are never done by one person.They're done by a team of people. 내 사업 모델은 비틀스다. 비틀스 네 명은 상대방의 부정적 성향을 통제했다. 이들은 균형을 이뤘고 총합은 개개의 합계보다 컸다. 이것이 내가 사업을 보는 관점이다.즉 사업에서 대단한 일은 결코 한 사람이 아니라 팀이 해낸다는 것이다.
