신체를 이용한 영어표현들 재대로 교육하려면 어떻게?

유치원이나 어린이집에서 영어교육을 받은 어린이들도 finger가 무엇을 의미하는지 알 것이다. 초등학교에 들어가도 finger/thumb에 대해 교육하고 받는 내용은 기껏 손과 관련해서 손가락의 명칭만 줄줄 외우게 하는 수준이다.

중학교에 다닐 쯤에야  아래와 같은 표현을 알게 된다.

keep[have] one's fingers crossed

(중지를 인지에 포개고) 기도하다, 좋은 결과[행운]를 빌다

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

내가 행운을 빌어 줄게.

keep one’s fingers crossed

(인지 위에 중지를 교차시켜) 소원이 이루어지도록 행운을 빌다(=hope for something)

cross one's fingers

(중지를 인지에 포개고) 기도하다, 행운을 빌다

Cross your fingers. Good luck for your exam.

시험 잘 봐라.

 

thumbs–up 

[singular] :  a gesture in which you hold your hand out with your thumb pointed up in order to say yes, to show approval, etc. 그렇다고 말하거나 마음에 든다는 것을 나타내거나 하기 위해 엄지손가락을 위로 향하게 하여 손을 내미는 동작 
▪ The coach gave me a/the thumbs-up after I scored the goal. — 흔히 비유적으로 씀 ▪ Our proposal got a/the thumbs-up. [=our proposal was approved] ▪ The movie got a thumbs-up from most critics. [=most critics liked the movie]

 

point an accusing finger at or point a/the finger at

:  to accuse or blame (someone) (누군가)를 비난하다·탓하다<<손가락질하다>> 

He was quick to point an accusing finger at his coworkers.

fingerprint

1 a :  the mark that is made by pressing the tip of a finger on a surface 손가락 끝을 표면에 대고 눌러서 생기는 무늬 <<지문>> 
▪ Detectives found his fingerprints all over the gun. ▪ Everyone has a unique fingerprint. — 때때로 비유적으로 씀 ▪ This project has his fingerprints all over it. [=it is obvious that he was very involved in this project] 

b :  a mark of this kind made in ink for the purpose of identifying a person 신원 확인을 목적으로 잉크를 묻혀서 만들어 내는 이런 무늬 — 대개 복수형 ▪ The police took her fingerprints for their files. —called also print

2 :  something (such as genetic material) that can be used to identify a person 신원 확인에 사용될 수 있는 (유전 물질 같은) 것 
▪ a DNA fingerprint 

 to take the fingerprints of (someone, such as a criminal) for the purpose of identification 신원 확인을 목적으로 (범죄자 같은 사람)의 지문을 채취하다 
▪ He was arrested, taken to the police station, and fingerprinted.

— fingerprinting noun[noncount] 
▪ He was arrested and taken to the police station for fingerprinting.

  

  위와 같이 배웠으면 많이 배웠다고 생각할지 모르지만 손가락으로 할 수 있는 동작이나 행위를 표현하기에는 너무 부족하다는 것을 모두다 알 것입니다. 이제 영어로 그것들을 어떻게 표현하는지 살펴보겠습니다.

우선 thumb과 관련해서

thumb through [phrasal verb]

thumb through (something) :  to turn the pages of (a book, magazine, etc.) quickly (책, 잡지 따위)의 페이지를 얼른 넘기다 <<대충 훑어보다>> 
▪ I thumbed through a magazine while I waited.

thumb your nose at

:  to show very clearly that you do not like or care about (something) (어떤 것)을 좋아하지 않거나 관심이 없음을 분명히 나타내다 <<무시하다>> 
▪ She thumbed her nose at my suggestions. ▪ They thumb their nose at the rules. [=they ignore the rules]

green thumbnoun

[singular] US :  an unusual ability to make plants grow 식물을 잘 기르는 비범한 능력 
▪ Thanks to my mother's green thumb [=(Brit) green fingers], we usually had vegetables fresh from the garden.

— green–thumbed  /ˈgri:nˈθʌmd/ adjective
▪ a green-thumbed gardener

all thumbs (US) or Brit all fingers and thumbs

:  extremely awkward or clumsy 극도로 어색하거나 서투른 

  
▪ I'm all thumbs when it comes to wrapping packages.

be good at ~: ~에 능하다 be poor at ~ : ~에 서툴다 학교 시험문제에서 반드시 한번은 접하는 내용입니다. 그런데 all thumbs는 학교에서 안알려줍니다. 물론 이것을 나타내는 많은 표현들이 있습니다. 여기선 손가락에 대한 학습을 하는 곳이니 이만줄입니다.

put/stick two fingers up at someone

Brit, informal :  to make an obscene gesture by holding up the index finger and the middle finger of one hand in the shape of a V while keeping the palm turned inward 손바닥은 자신을 향한 상태에서 한 손의 집게손가락과 가운뎃손가락을 V자 모양으로 들어 올려서 저속한 몸짓을 하다, (욕을 하는 몸짓으로, 손등이 상대방을 향하게 해서 검지와 중지의) 손가락 두 개를 들어 보이다

   

   

These protest marches are a way of putting two fingers up at politicians.

lay a finger on 

informal :  to touch or hit (someone) (어떤 사람)에게 손대다, (어떤 사람)을 때리다 — 대개 부정문에 씀 

I don't know what he's complaining about. I never laid a finger on him.

make a heart with his thumb and forefinger to show that he loves her like this

give[flip] 사람 the finger

the finger US, informal :  an obscene gesture made by pointing the middle finger up, keeping the other fingers down, and turning the palm towards you 다른 손가락은 오므린 상태에서 가운뎃손가락을 세워 올리는 저속한 몸짓인데, 손바닥은 자기를 향하게 함 

She was so mad, she gave him the finger. 

Some angry driver flipped me the finger on the highway this morning.

     

  

     

  이런 것도 있어요!

pay out (something) or pay (something) out

 to allow (a rope or chain) to become loose and move through your hands (밧줄이나 사슬)을 풀어 주어 손 사이로 움직이게 하다 

▪ We lowered the anchor and continued to pay out several more feet of rope.

  

 아래는 학교 다닐 때는 반드시 한번쯤은 푹 빠져서 연습하는 것인데.

twirl a pencil between one's fingers 연필을 손가락 사이에 끼워 돌리다.

• He was rolling a pencil between his fingers.
• 그는 가락 사이로 연필을 돌리고 있었다.
  

  

  청각적인 부분[소리]와 연관시켜 알아봅시다. 예술적으로 아래와 같이 소리를 내시는 분들은 정말 부럽습니다.

snap one's fingers

 to use your thumb and fingers to make a short, sharp sound 엄지와 다른 손가락을 써서 짧고 날카로운 소리를 내다 <<딱 소리를 내다>> [+ obj] 

▪ People snapped their fingers to the beat. 

▪ He snapped his fingers to get the waiter's attention. [no obj] ▪ People in the audience snapped to the beat.

crack one’s knuckles

손가락 마디를 꺾어서 딱딱 소리를 내다

 감정이나 기분이 연결되면 아래와 같은 표현도 할 수 있습니다.

fiddle with (something)

to move or handle (something) with your hands or fingers in a nervous way 초조해 하면서 손이나 손가락으로 (뭔가)를 움직이거나 만지작거리다 

▪ She was nervously fiddling with her pen as she waited for the test to start.

  아래와 같은 인식을 심어주는 것은 영어교육에 있어서 중요과제들 중의 하나라고 생각됩니다.

a :  something that is long and thin and looks like a finger 길고 가늘어서 손가락처럼 생긴 것 

▪ a finger of land extending into the sea 

▪ a finger of flame 

b :  the part of a glove into which a finger is placed 장갑에서 손가락을 끼워 넣는 부분

 fish finger

plural ∼ -gers

[count] Brit :  fish stick

1 :  to touch (something) with your fingers 손가락으로 (어떤 것)을 만지다 

She fingered the silk. 

She fingered her necklace.

2 chiefly US, informal :  to identify (someone) as the person who has committed a crime (어떤 사람)이 범죄를 저질렀다고 일러바치다 <<찌르다>> 

 He was fingered as a suspect.
