시간의 뜻을 가지는 무수한 명사들이 있는데, 토익, 토플, 텝스 등 인증시험에 등장하는 대표적인 두 단어 hour, time은 강의를 하시는 분이나 학습자들을 헷깔리게 하고 있고, 엉터리로 학습되어지는 대표적 어휘 중에 하나이다. 물론 학교시험에도 등장하고 학교나 학원 어디 할 것없이 엉터리로 교육되어지고 있다. 여기서는 이러한 엉터리 영어교육을 바로 잡아보려 한다.
일단 영어사전을 보면 몇가지 알 수 있는데도, 영어를 가르치는 분들 대부분이 여태까지 잘못된 교육을 받아온 분들인 모양이다. 물론 지금 강단에 계신 분들 대부분이 엉터리 교육을 받아온 분이지만[정원장영어 저를 포함헤서]. 이렇게 가르쳐도 되는지 한번쯤 의심을 가지고 살펴볼 시간이 있음에도 게으럼 피우지 않았나?
time은 두 번, 세 번 등 횟수를 나타내거나, 두 배, 세 배 등 배수를 나타낼 때만 [two times, three times] 복수로 나타내고 시간의 뜻일 때는 복수로 나타내지 않는다고 가르친다. 과연 그러한가? 일단 영어사전을 뒤져보자.

시간의 뜻일 때는 복수로 나타내지 않는가?

시간의 뜻일 때도 복수로 나타낼 수 있군! 여태까지 엉터리로 학습되는게 분명하군!
아래와 같은 숙어를 외우게 할 때에도 '왜 복수인지' 한번도 설명해주지 않고 그냥 외우게 한다. 대부분의 학습자들은 연관시켜서 생각하지 못하기 때문에 반문해 보지도 못한다.
