직함이나 직위앞의 전직/현직/부/대리/대행/고인이 된/뒤에 붙는 당선인

  각종 시험, 영어방송, 영자신문, 잡지, 책 등에서 직함[직위]앞에 전직[전] ~[대통령 등], 현직[현] ~, 부 ~,  ~ 대행 등의 의미를 가지는 어휘를 가끔 접하게 된다. 회원여러분들은 이것들에 대해 잘 파악하고 있나요? 오늘은 이러한 표현들을 정리해볼까 합니다.

1. former

used to say what someone or something was in the past 과거에 있었던 사람이나 사물을 언급할 때 씀 <<전의, 전임의>> ▪ a former congressman ▪ her former husband ▪ two former friends

He is a lawyer and former public prosecutor.

그는 변호사이자 전직 검사였습니다.

A former president once said, "You can borrow brains from other people, but not health." 

예전에, 전직 대통령은 "다른 사람들로부터 머리를 빌릴 수 있지만, 건강은 빌릴 수 없다."고 말했습니다.

2. ex-

former 이전의, 전(前)
▪ ex-president ▪ ex-girlfriend ▪ ex-husband

The ex-captain of the national team has finally accomplished the feat.

국가대표팀의 전 주장이 마침내 업적을 달성했다.

Oh, my! He turned out to be an ex-convict.

3. past

used to say what someone or something was in the past 어떤 사람이나 사물이 과거에 무엇이었는지 말할 때 씀 <<전직의, 전 …>> ▪ She is a past [=former] president of the club. ▪ Several past employees were interviewed for the story. ▪ past champions

He is a past chairman of the Boy Scouts of America.

The only past presidents to score higher were George W.Bush in 2001, in the aftermath of the Sept.11 attacks, and John Kennedy in 1961.

            더 높은 점수를 받은 대통령으로는 2001년 9.11 사태 이후 조지 W 부시 전 대통령과 1961년 존 케네디 전 대통령이 유일하다.

4. sometime

used to say what someone or something was in the past 어떤 사람·것이 과거에 …이었다고 말할 때 씀 <<한때 …였던, 전(前) …>> ▪ the sometime [=former] prime minister

A member of the Conservative Party, all his adult life, he was sometime President and also Chairman of the Conservative Monday Club for seventeen years.

He was sometime Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and is now Emeritus Professor at its School of Law.

5. present

You see stray incidents everyday, they even attempted to kill the present president.

What both former and present Presidents and their aides failed _ or refused _ to realize, however, was the FTA is not just about tariff-less trade but about the integration of two economies _ and toward the larger one's system. The controversial ISD is about whether Korea is ready to accept the U.S. economic system and practices, which puts private ownership ahead of all else, including public good. (코리아타임즈)

            그러나 전 현직 대통령들과 그들의 보좌진들이 깨닫기를 실패했거나 거부한 것은 FTA가 단지 관세 없는 무역뿐 만이 아니라 두 경제의 통합, 즉 더 큰 경제국가의 체제로의 통합이라는 점이었다. 말썽 많은 투자자-정부 간의 분쟁 해결 절차도 한국이 사적 소유권을 공공 선을 비롯한 그 모든 것보다 우선하는 미국식 시스템과 관행을 받아들일 준비가 되었느냐에 대한 문제이다.

과거와 현재의 선생님들은 학생들에게 매우 다른 걸 가르칩니다.

6. current

North Korea's current leader is Kim Jong-un, the son of the former dictator Kim Jong-il.

북한의 현 지도자는 전 독재자 김정일의 아들 김정은입니다.

South Korea's current leader is President Lee Myung-bak, while North Korea is led by Kim Jong-il.

한국의 현 지도자는 이명박 대통령, 북한의 지도자는 김정일입니다.

The KFTU on Thursday re-elected current leader Lee Yong-deuk, who has been emphasizing the need to actively engage in dialogue to deal with pending labor issues.

한노총은 목요일에 노동현안의 해결을 위해서는 적극적인 대화 참여의 필요성을 강조해 온 이용득 현 위원장이 재선됐다.

7. incumbent

holding an office or position 직무나 지위를 맡고 있는 <<현직의, 재직의>>
▪ the incumbent president/mayor/senator ▪ incumbent members of Congress

U.S. voters went to the polls and chose incumbent President Barack Obama as their next president on Nov. 6.

미국 유권자들이 11월6일 투표소에 가서 현직 대통령 버락 오바마를 자신들의 차기 대통령으로 선출했다.

Robb was the only Democratic incumbent senator to be defeated in that election.

8. on the active list

현역(복무)에 있는

My oldest son is on the active list.

내 큰 아들이 현역 복무 중이다.

I will see a policeman on the active list.

He returned home in 1880 with the character of being perhaps the most able commander on the active list of the navy.

9. in-service

happening while you are being paid to work 급료를 받고 일하는 중에 행해지는 <<재직 중의>>
▪ a day of in-service training for teachers

You can watch in-service police officers passing by.

10. sitting

currently holding an office 현재 직무를 맡고 있는 <<현직의>>
▪ a sitting President ▪ a sitting member of Parliament

Just we need is Obama jumping on the bandwagon against a sitting President.

Of couser politicians are perfectly free to express the pros and cons on any issue, including the hororing of a sitting President.

11. vice

The President could not attend the meeting, so the Vice President is sitting in. = The Vice President is sitting in for the President.

 sit in [phrasal verb]

to take the place of someone who is not present 없는 사람을 대신해서 참석하다

Meanwhile, Vice Premier Li Keqiang replaced Wen Jiabao as the new premier.

한편 리커창 부총리가 원자바오의 뒤를 이어 총리로 발탁되었다.

12. acting

You use acting before the title of a job to indicate that someone is doing that job temporarily.

performing a job for a short time 잠시 직무를 수행하는 :  holding a temporary position 임시 직책을 맡은 <<대리의, 서리의>>

The college's acting president will be replaced with a permanent one next fall.

Deputy Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan took over as acting caretaker premier.

니와툼롱 분송파이산 부총리가 임시 과도 총리가 되었다.
 

Deputy Mayor Kwon Young-gyu has been appointed as acting mayor until the election.

권영규 부시장이 그 선거까지 대행 시장으로 임명되었다.

13. deputy

an important assistant who helps the leader of a government, organization, etc. 정부, 조직 등의 지도자를 지원하는 중요한 보좌역 <<대리인>>  대리의, 부(副)의
▪ (US) a sheriff's deputy [=an assistant who helps a sheriff enforce the law] — 흔히 다른 명사 앞에 씀

a deputy sheriff  / a deputy mayor

She's now the department's deputy director.

There are countless duties carried out by prime ministers and deputy prime ministers.

총리들과 부총리들에 의해 수행되는 수 많은 의무들이 있다.

14. late

항상 명사 앞에 씀 :  living until recently 최근까지 살아 있던 :  not now living 현재 살아 있지 않은 <<고(故)>>
▪ He made a donation to the school in memory of his late wife. ▪ the late John Smith

I know that the late president Kim delivered a congratulatory message for the first issue of The Teen Times.

저는 고(故) 김 대통령이 틴타임즈 창간호를 위해 축전을 보내준 것을 알아요.

Will the daughter of late President Park Chung-hee have what it takes to navigate the nation in the coming five years?

15. president-elect / governor-elect

a person who has been elected president but who has not officially become president yet 대통령으로 선출되었으나 아직 공식적으로 대통령이 되지 않은 사람 <<대통령 당선인>>

She became Korea’s first female president-elect, beating her strong opponent Moon Jae-in.

President-elect Park will be sworn in on Feb. 25, 2013 for a single five-year term.

swear (someone) in or swear in (someone) :  to place (someone) in a new office or position by having an official ceremony in which that person makes a formal promise to do the work properly, to be honest and loyal, etc. 공식적인 의식을 치뤄서 임무를 합당하게 수행하고 정직과 충성 등을 나타내겠다는 정식 약속을 하게 하여 (어떤 사람)을 새로운 직무·지위에 앉히다 <<취임 선서를 하게 하다>>
▪ When do they swear him in? — 흔히 (be) sworn in의 형태로 씀 ▪ The new president will be sworn in tomorrow.

governor-elect

명사

(선출되어 곧 취임할) 차기 지사[총독].

On December 7, 1942, Governor-elect Orland Steen Loomis died before his inaugural.

-elect 형용사

선출된(명사 뒤에 붙어 '~당선자', '차기~'의 뜻으로 쓰임).
