동작, 행위의 영어표현은 어떻게 학습하나?

  현대사회는 위험이 중심현상이라고 한다. 과학기술의 위험성에 대한 경고가 여기저기서 울려 퍼지고 있다. 그러나 과학기술을 더 안전하고 안정적으로 실행할 수 있도록 하는 노력 또한 절실히 필요할 것이다. 전세계 기술의 대부분이 영어로 기술(기록)되어 있는 상태에서 대한민국의 영어교육은 무엇을 위해 행해지고, 어떻게 방향잡아져야 하는가? 실험실에서나 기술의 실행 현장에서나 사람이나 기계의 조작과 실행을 위한 행위와 동작에 대한 지시(기술, 서술)는 아주 세밀한 부분까지 유의해서 살펴야 한다. 같이 일하는 동료들과도 적절한 의사소통이 이루어져야함은 물론이다. 그래야 잘못된 실험이나 실행으로 인한 손실을 없앨 수 있고, 혹시나 일어날 지도 모르는 사고에 대해 예방을 할 수 있을 것이다.이러한 동작이나 행동에 대한 서술, 즉 표현은 어릴 적부터 차근차근 익숙해져야 할 부분이다. 그런데 대한민국의 교육자들은 그렇게 하고 있는가? 학습자들은 그렇게 배우고 있는가?

1. 들어가기

 ' I cleaned the room.' 이 문장에서 우리는 무엇을 알 수 있는가?

room이라는 단어를 배우고 clean이라는 단어를 배운 후에 접하게 되는 문장이다. 기껏 I clean the desk. I clean the bed. I clean the floor. 등으로는 'I'가 어떤 행동을 하는지 구체적으로 알 수 없다. clean의 행위를 묘사(표현)할 수 있도록 진화해 가야 한다. 학년이 높아질수록 청소도구인, duster(feather duster, hair duster, 총채)를 등장시켜서 dust books on the bookcases with a duster,  broom을 등장시켜서 sweep crumbs[the dirt, snow] on the floor with a broom라고 표현이 진화되어 간다.

  아마 위의 글 정도까지 말하고 서술할 수 있게 해주는 것이 고등부 수능이나 시험영어 교육의 한계라고 생각되어진다. 'grab the broom, move it from side to side / grab the handle of the mop, put the mop cloth on the floor, move it slowly back and forth on the floor and push it to the right corner'와 같이 더 구체적으로 묘사할 수 있도룍 영어교육이 나아가야 한다. 그렇게 하지 않는 것은 무엇때문일까? 시험에 그렇게 출제하지 않기 때문일까? 다른 이유가 있나?

2. leg, foot, knee

  사람이 다리를 이용해 이동하는 것에 대한 표현의 다양성을 어떻게 교육하고 학습할 것인가? 가장 먼저 go, move와 같은 단어를 비롯해서, step, walk, run, hop, jump, climb, leave, start 등을 배우게 된다. 회원 여러분들은 이 단어들이 주는 느낌이 머리 속에서 감지될 것이라 믿습니다. 사람이 다리로 이동하면서 나타내는 움직임은 다양합니다. 여기선 그것들에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

  먼저 다리와 관련하여 움직임을 나타내는 어휘들에 대해 살펴봅시다.

walk	walk 목적어 to 장소 :   ~와 ~까지 같이 걸어가다[바래다 주다]  I'll walk you to your car. take a walk / go for a walk/ go on a walk get a walk 는 야구에서 '포볼로 1루에 나가다'입니다
tiptoe	to walk with your heels raised up and only your toes touching the ground 발뒤꿈치를 들어서 발끝으로만 바닥을 디디며 걷다         She tiptoed through the puddle.  He tiptoed quietly around the house to avoid waking the children.
stagger	to move or cause (someone) to move unsteadily from side to side 불안정하게 이리저리 움직이다 또는 (어떤 사람)이 불안정하게 이리저리 움직이게 하다 <<비틀거리다, 비틀거리게 하다>> The drunk staggered away/off.        noun an unsteady movement while walking or standing 걷거나 서 있을 때 불안정한 동작 <<비틀거림>>   He walked with a slight stagger.
stride	to walk with very long steps 아주 큰 걸음으로 걷다 <<성큼성큼 걷다>>      She strode across the room towards me. We strode across the snowy fields.                             우리는 눈 덮인 들판을 가로질러 성큼성큼 걸어갔다 She came striding along to meet me.                             그녀가 성큼성큼 걸어서 나를 만나러 왔다.
tramp	1   to walk or step heavily 무겁게 걷다·밟다 <<터벅터벅 걷다, 짓밟다>>  Workmen were tramping [=(US) tromping] through the house all day.          2 :  to walk for a long distance or time 먼 거리를 걷다, 장시간 걷다   We spent the day tramping through the woods. [+ obj] ▪ He tramped the streets looking for his dog.
stomp	to walk or move with very heavy or noisy steps 발걸음이 아주 무겁거나 요란하게 걷다·움직이다 <<쿵쿵거리며 걷다·움직이다>>        He stomped angrily out of the room.  She stomped [=stamped] around the yard in her muddy boots.
waddle	to walk with short steps while moving from side to side like a duck 오리처럼 좌우로 움직이면서 종종걸음으로 걷다 <<뒤뚱뒤뚱 걷다, 어기적거리며 걷다>>          He waddled down the hallway.  A fat goose waddled across the yard.
strut	to walk in a confident and proud way 자신 있게 뽐내며 걷다 <<거만하게 걷다>>  She strutted across the stage.
slouch	to walk, sit, or stand lazily with your head and shoulders bent forward 머리와 어깨를 앞으로 구부리고 굼뜨게 걷다·앉다·서다 <<구부정하게 걷다·앉다·서다>>     She slouched into the room. .
wade	to walk through water 물을 헤치며 걸어가다 <<첨벙첨벙 걷다>>    (US) They took off their sandals and waded [=(Brit) paddled] at the edge of the pond.
dabble	to play or move around in water 물에서 놀거나 첨벙거리다      Jake dabbled in the water with Sue.
puddle	to wade in the puddle   The boys are puddling about in the puddle.
lumber	to move in a slow or awkward way 느리거나 어색하게 움직이다  If someone or something lumbers from one place to another, they move there very slowly and clumsily.  [뚱보·탱크·짐수레가] 육중하게[소란스럽게] 움직이다, 돌아다니다[after, into, along ‥]       The fat guy is lumbering along the beach.
hobble	to walk with difficulty because of injury or weakness 다치거나 허약해서 힘들게 걷다 <<절뚝거리다>>    She picked up her cane and hobbled across the room.
limp	to walk in a slow and awkward way because of an injury to a leg or foot 다리나 발을 다쳐서 느리고 어색하게 걷다 <<다리를 절다, 절뚝거리다>>    The injured player limped off the court.
hike	to walk a long distance especially for pleasure or exercise (특히 재미나 운동으로) 먼 거리를 걷다 :  to go on a hike 하이킹을 하다 <<도보 여행을 하다>>                     We spent the afternoon hiking around the lake.  She hiked 10 miles in the hot desert sun.  Our neighbors spent their vacation hiking the Rockies. go on a hike / go fo a hike   아래 표현은 조심하세요! take a hike  a rude way of telling somebody to go away (美, 비격식) (남에게 상스럽게 하는 말로) 꺼져 Take a hike, will you?    All right, I'm gonna take a hike. 알았어, 이제 사라져 주지.

run	to move with your legs at a speed that is faster than walking 다리를 사용하여, 걸을 때보다 빠른 속도로 움직이다 <<달리다, 뛰다>>    How fast can you run?  He runs faster than anyone else on the team.  She ran up the stairs to get her jacket.

leg it	chiefly Brit, informal :  to run fast especially in order to get away from someone or something (특히 어떤 대상에게서 달아나기 위해) 빨리 달리다    When they saw the police car, they legged it. We saw the police coming and legged it down the road. 우리는 경찰이 오는 것을 보고 도로 아래로 달아났다
career	[no obj] :  careen                   If a person or vehicle careers somewhere, they move fast and in an uncontrolled way.         (사람이나 차량이) (제멋대로) 달리다 The vehicle careered across the road and hit a cyclist.                             그 차량이 제멋대로 길을 가로질러 달리더니 자전거 탄 사람을 치었다.

step	to move in a specified direction by lifting your foot and putting it down in a different place 발을 들어 올렸다가 다른 곳에 내려놓는 동작으로 특정한 방향으로 움직이다 <<걷다>>  They stepped aside/forward/backward to let her pass.        He is stepping backward.

3. What is scooter? / How to Ride a Scooter / Can you tell me how to ride a scooter safely?

  많은 분들이 kickboard[= flutterboard]라고 잘못 알고 있는 scooter로 동작, 행위에 대한 학습을 해 봅시다. 입으로 말할 수 있도록 하는 것이 학습의 목표입니다.

kickboard      . A buoyant board used to keep the upper body of a swimmer afloat while allowing free movement of the legs, used chiefly to improve kicking technique or develop leg strength and endurance.

                               

Riding a kick scooter is a great way to build balance. It is also much easier to learn than how to ride a bike. After you master the basics, you can then move onto performing many scooter tricks.

Steps

Wear a helmet. Even though you may feel you don’t need one you will be safe, especially when learning. As you get more experienced you’ll feel confident enough to ride without it. It is also advisable to wear pads for the knees, wrists and elbows as well as a helmet.

Find a flat area, like a road, with as few cracks and ruts as possible. This ensures a smooth ride.

Put one foot on the scooter and grip the handlebars. Put your foot in the middle of the deck and keep the other foot planted on the ground.

Use the foot on the ground to push off and propel yourself forward. Keep that foot up, maybe a few inches off the ground so in case you tip over, you can stabilize yourself.

Know that once you have your balance you should try moving your kicking foot onto the scooter, behind your other foot.


One suggestion for parents is that they can hold the shoulder or the back of children for supporting them. In addition, some parents choose to run behind their children so that the child will feel safe and confident with their scooter.

Note that when you want to stop you should hit your brake with your back foot. Keep your foot there for a few seconds until you come to a complete stop, if you simply tap the break you’ll stop for a second and keep going.

Take a curve by slowly rotating the handlebar. If you make a sudden swerve, you may fall.

If you must ride on the road, stay as close to the curb as possible and give way to oncoming cars. Remember, the road is for cars and motorbikes, not kick scooters.

Learn how to safely jump or step off of your scooter if you lose control (this can often happen when riding downhill). Try your best to avoid doing this, but if you must, warn any people in the scooter’s path and be sure to retrieve it. If possible, try stepping off the scooter but grip the handlebars so the scooter doesn’t move.

Have your child ready to be familiar with the scooter yet? Here are some suggested questions for you to know whether this is an ideal time for teaching your child the method for riding:

1. Consider the ability to coordinate and make various movements of their body? Since riding the scooter requires more possibilities as balance, driving, turn, and stopped the scooter while running. As a result, parents should consider clearly the ability as well as the ages of children.

2. The ability to balance of children? Can the child jump immediately when playing on the street? The ability to balance when riding the scooter is considered as one of the hardest skills.

3. Can the child go by scooter without dropping it down on the road? Young children are less afraid to go scooter, he can learn to keep their balance and control the speed without  fear of falling. If the children can go on scooter easily, then this is a great chance to improve more.
