[많은]의 뜻을 가진 수식어들과 출제문제에 대한 대응을 위해

  '많은'의 뜻을 지닌 수많은 어휘나 숙어가 있다. 'numerous, multiple, hunderds of, thousands of, multitude' 등의 어휘는 알고 있어야 한다. 물론 'various, varied, diverse, different'와의 느낌차도 알아야 한다. 중등교육과정에서 주로 다루어지는 수식어들을 아래에 정리한다. 이렇게 정리해주는 교사나 강사를 만나는 것도 쉬운 일이 아님을 아시는지요?^^

수	양
a lot of / lots of a large number or amount of (things, people, etc.) (물건, 사람 등)의 수나 양이 많은 ▪ A lot of people feel that way. ▪ There was a lot of space. = There was lots of space. ▪ We had lots of fun. ▪ You can enjoy yourself without spending a lot of money. ▪ I don't need a lot of help; I just need a little. ▪ We don't have an awful lot of money/time. [=we don't have much money/time] ▪ (informal) I think their ideas are a lot of garbage/nonsense. [=I think their ideas are very foolish] ▪ (informal) It doesn't make a whole lot of [=very much] difference. ▪ Not a lot of people [=not many people] know that. ▪ “I've brought an umbrella.” “A (fat) lot of good that will do [=that will not do any good] now that it's stopped raining!”
plenty of a large number or amount of something 많은 수나 양 :  a number or amount of something that is enough for a particular purpose 특정한 목적에 충분할 정도로 많은 수나 양 <<풍부함>> ▪ “Would you like more pie?” “No, thanks. I've had plenty.” ▪ There's plenty [=enough] for everyone. — 흔히 + of ▪ He has plenty of room to work. ▪ There will be plenty of time to relax later. ▪ Remember to drink plenty of water before and after you exercise. ▪ He'll be in plenty of trouble when he gets home. — 흔히 뒤에 to + 동사가 나옴 ▪ There's plenty to see and do in the city. ▪ Your family has plenty to be thankful for. ▪ We always have plenty to talk about. man with plenty of guts 배짱이 센 남자
a great[good] deal of  a large number or amount 큰 수나 분량 :  a lot 많음 — a good deal 또는 a great deal이라는 어구로 씀 ▪ It doesn't cost a great deal of money. [=doesn't cost much money] ▪ I spent a good deal of time [=a lot of time] thinking about it. ▪ It would mean a great deal to us if you would come. ▪ I learned a great deal from my mistakes. ▪ It's a good deal [=much] faster to go by bus. ▪ I felt a great deal better after the surgery. ▪ The town hasn't changed a great deal since we left.

a large[great] number of A good number of college students [=many college students] have entered the competition. [a number of]는 '많은'의 뜻이 아님에 주의 - 잘못 가르치고 있는 것 중 하나임 a number of     얼마간의(some) There are a number of [=several] different options to choose from. quite a number of     상당한 수의, 제법 많은    Quite a number of students came to his funeral. 꽤 많은 학생들이 그의 장례식에 왔다
	a large[great] amount of The process takes a great amount of money and effort. 그 과정에는 거대한 비용과 노력이 듭니다. 또한 때때로 복수 가산 명사와 함께 쓰기도 하지만, 그렇게 쓰면 오류라고 흔히 말한다.  There were a large amount of mistakes.

  아래에서는 영화나 미드, 애니, 영어방송 등에서 어린이들도 자주 접하게 되는 '많은'이라는 뜻을 지닌 수식어구를 좀 더 정리한다. 늦어도 중학교에서도  다루어져야 할 어구들이다.

수	양
a host of / hosts of a great amount or number 많은 양이나 큰 수   대부분의 사전이나 용례에서 '수'에 사용함  ▪ a (whole) host of options A host of unwelcome  thoughts were pressing in on him. 반갑지 않은 수많은 생각들이 그에게 마구 밀려왔다. Too much drink can lead to a host of  ills. 과음은 여러가지 질병을 유발할 수 있다.  Hosts of  tourists came to watch the event.   그 행사를 보려고 관광객들이 대거 몰려왔다 cf) She is a host of EBS’s Tok! Tok! Boni Hani. 그녀는 EBS의 톡!톡! 보니하니의 진행자입니다.
a mass of / masses of  a [count] :  a large number or amount of something 큰 수, 많은 양 ▪ The plant produces a (great/large/huge) mass of blossoms every spring. = The plant produces masses of blossoms every spring. ▪ a mass of data/information b [count] :  a large number of people 많은 수의 사람들 ▪ A great mass of voters turned out for the election. ▪ The team was greeted by a mass [=crowd] of fans. ▪ The war has forced masses of people to flee their homes. c masses [plural] Brit, informal :  a large amount of something 어떤 것의 많은 양 ▪ Don't worry: we've still got masses [=lots] of time.
a heap of / heaps of informal :  a great number or large amount of something 어떤 것의 다수 또는 다량 <<많음>> ▪ He's in a heap of trouble! — 흔히 복수형 ▪ They've got heaps of money.
a ton of / tons of a great quantity; a lot:, a large amount 아주 많음  a ton of jokes. I've got tons of letters to write. tonne أطْنان، كميَّه كَبيرَه много montes de tuny die Unmenge tonsvis πάμπολλοι He earns a ton of money.  I've got tons of homework to do.   다음은 '많은'의 뜻을 지닌 수식어로 우리의 상식을 벗어나서 'a[n]'와 many가 어우러져 있는 것인데, 동사의 수의 문제로 자주 출제되니 반드시 숙지하시길.

수	양
many a 단수명사 + (단수동사) used with a singular noun to refer to a large number of things or people 단수 명사를 써서 사물이나 사람의 수가 많음을 나타낼 때 씀 <<여러, 많은, 다수의>> ▪ It remained a mystery for many a year. [=for many years] ▪ I've been there many a time. [=many times] ▪ Many a tale was told. [=many tales were told] ▪ Many an answer [=many answers] can be found in this book. ▪ Many a man has tried [=many men have tried] but few men have succeeded.
a good[great] many + 복수명사 + (복수동사) very many; a lot A good many people think she's right. She has a good many friends. 그녀는 친구가 제법 많다. A lot of people have tried to climb the mountain, but a great/good many of them have failed.
