시간의 뜻을 가지는 무수한 명사들이 있는데, 토익, 토플, 텝스 등 인증시험에 등장하는 대표적인 두 단어 hour, time은 강의를 하시는 분이나 학습자들을 헷깔리게 하고 있고, 엉터리로 학습되어지는 대표적 어휘 중에 하나이다. 물론 학교시험에도 등장하고 학교나 학원 어디 할 것없이 엉터리로 교육되어지고 있다. 여기서는 이러한 엉터리 영어교육을 바로 잡아보려 한다.
일단 영어사전을 보면 몇가지 알 수 있는데도, 영어를 가르치는 분들 대부분이 여태까지 잘못된 교육을 받아온 분들인 모양이다. 물론 지금 강단에 계신 분들 대부분이 엉터리 교육을 받아온 분이지만[정원장영어 저를 포함헤서]. 이렇게 가르쳐도 되는지 한번쯤 의심을 가지고 살펴볼 시간이 있음에도 게으름 피우지 않았나?
time은 두 번, 세 번 등 횟수를 나타내거나, 두 배, 세 배 등 배수를 나타낼 때만 [two times, three times] 복수로 나타내고 시간의 뜻일 때는 복수로 나타내지 않는다고 가르친다. 과연 그러한가? 일단 영어사전을 뒤져보자.
times [plural] — used to say how much bigger, smaller, faster, etc., something is than something else 어떤 것이 다른 것보다 얼마나 더 큰지, 작은지, 빠른지 등을 말할 때 씀 <<배>> ▪ Her salary is five times greater than mine. = She earns five times as much money as I do. ▪ The area received three times the amount of rain it got last year. ▪ You would have to spend two times [=twice] as much at a regular department store. ▪ Their original investment has paid for itself many times over. 시간의 뜻일 때는 복수로 나타내지 않는가?

시간의 뜻일 때도 복수로 나타낼 수 있군! 여태까지 엉터리로 학습되는게 분명하군!
아래와 같은 숙어를 외우게 할 때에도 '왜 복수인지' 한번도 설명해주지 않고 그냥 외우게 한다. 대부분의 학습자들은 연관시켜서 생각하지 못하기 때문에 반문해 보지도 못한다.

hours내 나타내고자 하는 의미와 times로 나타내고자 하는 의미의 차이를 이해하는게 필요할 뿐입니다. 회원 여러분들은 이해가 되셨으면 좋겠는데. ㅋㅋ. 1시에서 2시까지 one hour, 1시부터 3시까지 two hours. 1시에서 2시까지와 3시에서 4시까지 two hours, two times, 10시에서 12시까지, 1시에서 3시까지 그리고 4시에서 6시까지 합해서 six hours, three times. 월요인은 1시부터 6시까지, 화요일은 10시부터 5시까지, ~ 등은 times로 나타낼 수 있구나! 이렇게 이해가 되시면 OK입니다. 또는 월요일은 7:00에 화요일은 8:00에 open하는구나!

알고보면 엉터리로 교육되어지는 영어가 time/times 하나 뿐이겠습니까?
전부다 엉터리로 교육되어지는 것입니다.
걱정스러운 바는
그렇다면 지금까지 배운 엉터리 영어를 바로잡아야하는데
하나하나 다 따져가면 언제 다 바로잡느냐 하는 것이죠.
time으로 쓰일 때와 times로 쓰일 때의 차이를 관통할 수 있다면
그동안 우리가 잘못 배운 모든 단수형과 복수형의 사례에 그대로 적용시킬 수 있지 않겠습니까?
엉터리 설명에서 출발하여 그 엉터리 설명들을 타파하려 한다면 여전히 엉터리 설명의 올가미와 함정에서 벗어나기 힘들듯 합니다.
차라리 엉터리 설명을 모두 배제하고 아예 생각하지 않고 처음부터 다시 시작하는 것이 낫지 않을까요?

하나, 시간 ㅡ 시간의 간격 또는 양을 나타내는 단위로서의 year month hour minute 등을 언급하지 아니하셨습니다. 통찰까지는아니더라도 연구와 정리가 덜 된 상태이실 듯합니다.

3 시대 a period in history > ancient times 등인데
1,2,3 에 대한 기본적이고 적절한 ㅡ 초6 수준의 아이들에게 적합한 예문으로 쉽고 간명한 ㅡ 예문없이 인용문으로 도배를 하는 건 무책임합니다.

이곳은 광고나 홍보를 위한 곳도, 자신의 짧은 지식을 내보이기 위한 곳은 더더욱 아니겠지요.
time이 쪼갤 수 없는 관념적 추상적 개념적 개념이어서 쪼개거나 세는 게 어색할 때와 ㅡ 즉, uncountable
그것들의 합이거나 반복되는, 즉 셀 수 있는, 구분할 수 있는 경우 둘로 나누게 된다는 말씀 아닌가요?
셋, 한국어에서는 단수와 복수 개념이 구체적이지 않은 것도 우리가 영어의 수개념을 어려워하는 까닭 중 하나이겠지요.

솔직히 수업시간에 단어 하나하나에 많은 시간을 할애할 수 없는 건 어쩔 수 없는거 아닌가요..
문맥상 어떻게 쓰였느냐를 파악해가다보면 굳이 time을 countable이냐.. uncountable이냐.. 확정지어주는게아니라.. 이런땐 이렇게 쓰이고 해석하고 나중에 그렇게 써라.. 이렇게 하시지 않나요..?
수업을 대충 때우시는 선생님들한테는 엉터리란 표현을 쓰셔도 무방하다 싶은데.. 그렇지 않으신분들도 많으세요..;; 그냥.. 공격적인 어투 보다는 이렇군요~ 하면서 그냥 편하게 설명하듯이 해주셨으면 마찰이 없었을텐데...;;
