교과서나 수능 참고서 등에 [believe + 사람], [believe in + 사람]이 들어간 문장때문에 가끔 헷깔리게 한다. 미드나 영화, 애니 등에도 물론 나오고, 일상생활에도 사용되지만 명쾌하게 알려주지 않는다. 아래는 한 카페에 있는 질문과 답변내용이다. 이것이 대한민국 영어교육의 현실일 것이다.
believe in의 의미는 believe와 어떤 차이가 있나요?
차이가 있는 것으로 아는데 기억이 희미해서요. Believe in yourself and never anyone tell you~ 이런 식으로 나가는 문장입니다. 여기에 in이 쓰인 이유는 무엇인가요?
제가 줏어 듣기로는 believe 다음에 in 이 붙으면 완전히 믿는다 뭐 그런 뜻으로 들었어요 I believe you. 나는 네 말을 믿는다 I believe in you. 나는 너의 인격을 믿는다 = 나는 너를 믿는다. 사전에 이렇게 씌여 있습니다. 설명 잘 하셨네요. 'believe you'는 널 믿는다. 즉 '네 말을 믿는다'라는 뜻이죠. I believe in God.은 난 신(의 존재)를 믿는다 정도의 뜻... 제 느낌상 말씀드리면 believe you는 나를 속이지 않는다고 생각한다. 니 말이 사실임을 믿는다. 이런 느낌이고, believe in 은 trust + rely on 의 의미랑 비슷하면서 훨씬 강력한 의미의 느낌입니다.
