Joyce has been at our house for 1 week and several days so far and has adjusted to the time change extremely well. She knows English well and understands much of what we are saying. She is a quiet and smart young lady with a pleasant nature about her and it has been wonderful getting to know her. Life in our house is quite busy with many activities and such and she has adjusted well.
Last week and this week Joyce has been reading short stories out loud from the "Doors to Discover" series and answering comprehension questions with me in full sentences. She does well at pronunciation and has not had to have much correction in this area. She is quick to ask when she does not understand a word and we are keeping a list of those words for her to remember. She will also be working on "Daily Grams" which is a short review of capitalization, punctuation, grammar concepts and sentence combining which she will be doing each day - in this she is at a Grade 7 level. We are also working through the Easy Grammar Level 1 Book and she is doing very well. She has a good understanding of prepositions, subjects and irregular and regular verbs. We also work on a journal each day and generally it will be centered around questions that I provide. So far she has told me all about her favourite foods in Korea, her family in Korea and described her bedroom in Korean using colorful language. I have given her a novel to read entitled "Parvana" and she will be working through this on her own time. We will also be putting together a little activity in regards to this once she is finished.
Joyce plays the flute very well and we have had an opportunity to play a couple of Christmas songs together. We will be working together on several songs so that we can play them for our family at Christmas. She also attended a conference with Rachel and I last Saturday in the U.S. where we spent 4 hours with 600 other young girls singing, listening to a speaker and making a craft. Some of the other activities that Joyce will be participating in will be a guided tour of the Powerhouse Dam in Mission, fieldtrip to the Spacestation in Vancouver which will be in January and probably a trip to ScienceWorld. She also attends "band" practice every Monday night with our family and sits in the drum class with Rachel. In December she will be participating in a cupcake class and T-Shirt making class. We will also have opportunity to swim, skate, jump on the trampoline (which she already is enjoying) and watch parades - which we will be doing tomorrow!
The kids all love Joyce especially Rachel and Rebekah as they are around the same age. We are looking forward to our time together over these next months and know already that Joyce will exceed very well in her studies and her interaction with the kids and family as a whole.
