Of course, we’re a few weeks off yet. But there are a few things you can do now to improve your chances of pocketing some serious bargains this year. Here’s everything you need to know now about Black Friday 2018, from when it is to where and how to find the best Black Friday camera deals this year.

When is Black Friday 2018?

Black Friday 2018 officially falls on 23 November – it’s always the first Friday after Thanksgiving – with Cyber Monday following three days later.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is widely considered to be one of the best shopping periods of the year. Marking the start of the seasonal shopping season, it was traditionally a one-day event during which high street prices would plummet for 24 hours – giving savvy shoppers the chance to save money on Christmas presents.

In recent years however, the sales period has extended to the entire month of November. And the best Black Friday deals are no longer just in-store. These days many of the best bargains are found online, which means you can bag brilliant Black Friday camera deals from the comfort of your home.

Black Friday camera deals: predictions

So where do we think the big savings will be for photographers this year? Well, we’re likely to see a selection of decent Black Friday DSLR deals from Canon and Nikon, in particular, throughout November.

However, in 2017 the best Black Friday camera deal by far came courtesy of Sony and Amazon, with the full-frame mirrorless Sony A7 and 28-70mm lens kit slashed to £799 after cashback. We’ve since seen that price drop even further: over Prime Day, Amazon cut the cost of the Sony A7 and FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens kit to just £569 after cashback. The camera has of course been superseded by two additional models, but this was a fantastic bargain for anyone wanting a full-frame or mirrorless camera on a budget – and we would hope to see equally good offers this Black Friday on any remaining A7 stock.

We also anticipate that some of the most popular Black Friday camera deals will come from GoPro. Sure, the new GoPro Hero 7 Black won’t see a notable price cut – but the older GoPro Hero 6 Black and GoPro Hero 5 Black are likely to be subject to some decent savings.

Finally, we also expect discounts on DSLR, mirrorless and compact cameras from all other major manufacturers, including Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm and Kodak – and from the big accessory players as well.

How to get the best Black Friday camera deals

1. Do your homework

The best way to avoid falling for a bad deal is to know the value of what you’re buying – and its normal retail price. We know retailers sometimes inflate prices before Black Friday to make discounts look bigger, but if you know the normal price, you can make a sound judgement on how good a deal really is. Also, online price-comparison shopping sites like PriceGrabber.com can help here.

2. Make a list

It’s easy to become carried away in the shopping frenzy and make impulse purchases. A good way to stay focused is to create a list of items you might want to buy on Black Friday. Read the reviews, and educate yourself on the specs – that way you’ll be better placed to tell the difference between good and bad deals (and good and bad versions of that product, too).

3. Check whether you can get cashback

A lot of debit and credit cards offer cashback on purchases, so take a look at the fine print on yours. Many credit cards also come with benefits like free warranties, return protection and sale price protection – which are worth thinking about.

4. Sign up for Amazon Prime

There are a lot of advantages to having an Amazon Prime membership over Black Friday – not least an exclusive 30-minute access period to all Amazon Lightening Deals. An Amazon Prime subscription will set you back £79/$99 per year, but if you're not sold on committing to Prime up, don't worry. You can also get access to the same Black Friday benefits by signing up for a 30-day free trial. You can cancel any time before the 30 days with no strings attached.
