체코 화가·장식화가. 모라비아 출생.
프라하의 미술학교 입시에 실패한 뒤 빈으로 나가 무대미술 공방(工房)에서 일하였고,

그 뒤 뮌헨에서 수업하다가 1888년 파리로 가서 아카데미쥘리앵에서 공부하였다.
-
1894년 여배우 사라 베르나르의 포스터를 그린 것이 크게 히트하여 명성을 떨쳤다.

사라와 계약한 6년 동안에 그린 포스터, 꽃과 여자의 화려한 무하양식은
-
아르누보의 대명사가 되었다.
-
1904년 이후 몇 차례 미국으로 가서 그림도 그리고 교편도 잡았다.
-
1910년에는 조국으로 되돌아가, 18년간이라는 긴 세월을 보내면서 그린 대작
《슬라브서사시(敍事詩)》를 완성하였다. 국장(國章)·우표·지폐도 디자인하였다.
