토마스 게인즈버러 

영국 초상화가·풍경화가. 잉글랜드 서퍽주 서드베리 출생.
1742년 런던에서 F.헤이먼에게 그림을 배우고 풍경화에 관심을 가졌으나

초상화가로 데뷔하였다.
초상화에서는 반 다이크의 영향을 받아 라이벌이던 레이놀즈의

냉정한 통찰에 입각한 성격묘사와는 대조적으로,

모델의 성격을 정서적으로 파악하여 유연한 광선 밑에 생겨나는
명암조와 우아한 색조로 표현하였다.
68년 아카데미 회원이 되고, 74년 이후 런던에 거주하였다.
평생 풍경화를 계속 그렸으며 만년에 취재차 시골을 방문할 틈이 없을 때에는
탁상에 놓아둔 나뭇가지나 작은 돌을 보며 풍경화를 그릴 정도로 정열을 쏟았다.
그의 풍경화는 자연에 대한 애정 표현으로 19세기 풍경화의 선구적 역할을 하였다.
1767년 레이놀즈와 함께 로열 아카데미 창립에 참여하였으나,
그 후 아카데미와의 관계가 항상 원활하지 못하여

자택을 작품 발표회장으로 삼았다.
68년 아카데미 회원이 되고, 74년 이후 런던에 거주하였다.
당시의 궁정 및 상류사회인들에게서  가장 높은 평가를 받았으며

대담한 색채를 구사하여  당시의 화가들과 다른 화풍을 보였다.
영국 풍경 묘사의 선구자로 J. 컨스터블 등
19세기 풍경화가에게 큰 영향을 주었다.
작품으로는 《푸른 옷의 소년》 《양치기 소년》 《아침 산책길》 등이 있다.
