When the Seattle SuperSonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder five seasons ago, the timing of their ownership group's rebuilding plan was nearly perfect. After a poor start Oklahoma City fans were willing to sit through because of their excitement about adding an NBA team, the Thunder surged into the playoffs during their second season of existence and haven't looked back. Oklahoma City reached the NBA Finals in Year 4 and has an excellent chance of getting back and maybe even claiming the title this time around.
If the Seattle ownership group fronted by investor Chris Hansen succeeds in its bid to purchase the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family and bring them up I-5 to become the new incarnation of the Sonics, fans in the Emerald City will certainly hope for a similar turnaround in the team's new home.
Despite the worst point differential in the Western Conference, Sacramento has shown signs of life in going 6-5 after a 7-17 start to the season. Here's how the team could maximize its chances of aping the Thunder.
1. Commit to DeMarcus Cousins
Whether in Sacramento, Seattle, Virginia Beach or almost any locale, building around Cousins is an inevitable first step. He's the only talent on the Kings' roster who can compare to the young stars Oklahoma City accumulated before moving. As much trouble as Cousins might be, he's worth it, as his motivated play since his suspension for a confrontation with coach Keith Smart has demonstrated.
In his past seven games, Cousins is averaging 19.3 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists, the kind of production that could make him an All-Star if maintained over an extended stretch. Cousins is shooting better, pushing his true shooting percentage from a dreadful 48.2 percent to 51.6 percent, and has also become more efficient by cutting his turnovers. His rebound rate is up by a quarter. Perhaps most importantly, Cousins is sharing the ball and taking advantage of his passing skills from the high post, nearly doubling his assist rate from the season's first two months.
The impact of Cousins' improvement can be seen in Sacramento's bottom line. He's part of a new Kings starting five -- along with Isaiah Thomas, Francisco Garcia, John Salmons and holdover Jason Thompson -- that has outscored opponents by 6.8 points per 100 possessions since he was reinstated. Since Dec. 28, adjusted for a road-heavy schedule, Sacramento has rated only 1.0 point per game worse than an average team. That's not playoff-caliber, but it's major progress from a team that had been floundering.
Finding a way to keep Cousins committed to a smart, team-oriented brand of basketball may always be a challenge. Still, there's no way the Kings could get anything close to equivalent value, or production, if they trade Cousins at this point. In terms of the star talent needed for playoff runs, the franchise would be back to square one without him.
2. Move on from Tyreke Evans
The other player once considered a cornerstone of Sacramento's building process hasn't been a part of the team's recent success. Evans, the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, missed nearly a month with a sore left knee before returning for Monday's blowout loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. While it's not fair to say the Kings played well because Evans was out of the lineup, it is accurate to say they did not miss him during that span, as backup Marcus Thornton and a resurgent Jimmer Fredette were able to replace Evans' scoring production with no noticeable drop-off.
The organization is getting close to having to decide whether to commit to Evans, a restricted free agent at season's end. Since his dynamic rookie season, Evans has stood still and even gone backward. It's clear by now that Evans is not a point guard, which leaves him as a shooting guard incapable of spacing the floor from the perimeter. Evans is a career 25.8 percent shooter from beyond the arc, one reason Sacramento has scored 3.1 more points per 100 possessions with him on the bench this season, according to NBA.com/Stats.
Evans is still just 23, so some team will take a chance at converting his potential into more production. He would be most valuable before the deadline, when a trade would allow his new employers to evaluate Evans for a couple of months before he hits free agency. If there's a market for Evans, the Kings should look to move him by the Feb. 21 deadline.
3. Add paint protection
The combination of better shooting on the wings and Cousins' focused play has turned Sacramento into a solid offensive team. Since Dec. 28, the Kings rank eighth in the NBA in offensive rating. The other end of the floor remains a major problem, as the Kings are still 29th in points allowed per 100 possessions. They also sit near the bottom of the league in defensive rebounding and sending opponents to the foul line.
The biggest issue Sacramento must solve is defending the rim. Per Hoopdata.com, opponents shoot 67.3 percent around the basket against the Kings. Only the Cleveland Cavaliers have weaker interior defense. This points to the difficulty caused by Cousins' skill set. To space the floor on offense, Sacramento needs him at center, but Cousins isn't a shot-blocker. He rejects just 1.5 percent of opponents' 2-point attempts, which puts him below average -- not for a center, for any player. Five Kings teammates, including wing Francisco Garcia, block shots more frequently.
Ideally, the Kings would pair Cousins with an athletic shot-blocker like Serge Ibaka who also has the ability to play away from the basket, but such players are not easy to find. Sacramento might hope Thomas Robinson eventually develops into that partner for Cousins, but he remains inconsistent from the perimeter and hasn't been much better as a shot-blocker than Cousins with a block rate of 2.1 percent.
4. Find a Sam Presti
One of the most important assets the Thunder took to Oklahoma City can't be found on the roster. Presti, hired as general manager before the team's final season in Seattle, did a masterful job of accumulating pieces to build around the stars the team drafted in the lottery. Ibaka, for example, was drafted at age 18 with one of the two first-round picks the Sonics got from Phoenix for taking on the final season of Kurt Thomas' contract. After a year developing in Spain, he quickly proved a steal.
Kings president Geoff Petrie, who is responsible for the slow pace of the team's rebuilding effort, is in the final year of his contract. It's not clear Petrie wants to return, and new ownership would likely want to install their own GM anyway. Petrie's replacement must follow Presti's example by using every avenue to upgrade the roster and utilizing all the tools available to a modern executive, including statistical analysis.
Wherever they play next season, the Kings need more time to develop a core. Recent lottery picks besides Cousins have yielded intriguing complementary pieces like Fredette, who has shown potential as a scoring threat off the bench yet remains inconsistent, instead of the starters Sacramento needed to add. While Oklahoma City arrived partially formed with a pair of stars in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, soon to be joined by Ibaka and James Harden, the Kings have Cousins and a series of question marks.
