Getting Shaq in '96 was a slam dunk for the Lakers, but most
decisions aren't quite that easy. Look back at some of the notable

Before and After
By Rob Peterson
Aug. 4 -- This NBA offseason has proved to an active one at Player Movement Central 2003. While these transactions naturally have fans excited about the upcoming 2003-04 season, on most occasions, it takes some time to evaluate the wisdom of making these moves. NBA.com has compiled in, alphabetical order, some of the more notable free agent signings and sign-and-trade deals of the last 10 seasons.

From: Charlotte Hornets to Sacramento Kings
When: After 1997-98 season
Kings' record in 1997-98: 27-55; record in 1998-99: 27-23
Divac's stats, 1997-98: 10.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.7 apg in 64 games
Divac's stats, 1998-99: 14.3 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 4.3 apg in 50* games
Analysis: Divac, one of the better passing big men in the league,
meshed perfectly with the Princeton-style offense run by the Kings as
he averaged a career high 4.3 assists. Divac has helped lead the
Kings to the playoffs every year since he and Chris Webber arrived.
|
From: Minnesota Timberwolves to Sacramento Kings
When: After 1999-2000 season
Kings' record in 1998-99: 27-23; record in 1999-2000: 44-38
Jackson's stats, 1998-99: 5.1 ppg, 2.4 apg, 0.66 spg in 73
games
Jackson's stats, 1999-2000: 7.2 ppg, 2.0 apg, 1.10 spg in 79
games
Analysis: Though a blip on the transactions wire at the time,
Jackson has been a spark plug off the bench for the Kings in his
three seasons with the team, winning the Sixth Man Award in
2002-03. He also filled in admirably during the 2002-03 season
when starting point guard Mike Bibby spent the first two months on
the injured list.

From: Phoenix Suns to Denver Nuggets
When: After 1997-98 season
Nuggets' record in 1997-98: 11-71; record in 1998-99: 14-36
McDyess' stats, 1997-98: 15.1 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.67 bpg in 81
games
McDyess' stats, 1998-99: 21.2 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 2.30 bpg in 50*
games
Analysis: McDyess spent his first two seasons in Denver before
being traded to Phoenix just before the 1997-98 season began. A
free agent in the offseason, McDyess was the object of a fierce battle
for his services. The Nuggets won out but didn't return to the
playoffs with McDyess in the lineup.

From: Denver Nuggets to Atlanta Hawks
When: After 1995-96 season
Hawks' record in 1995-96: 46-36; record in 1996-97: 56-26
Deke's stats, 1995-96: 11.0 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 4.49 bpg in 74 games
Deke's stats, 1996-97: 13.3 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 3.30 bpg in 80 games
Analysis: Mutombo provided the defensive presence the Hawks
were sorely lacking in the late '90s. His arrival signaled another three
years of playoff appearances and the Hawks' best record in three
seasons. The Hawks traded Mutombo in the middle of the 2000-01
season.

From: Orlando Magic to Los Angeles Lakers
When: After 1995-96 season

Shaq's stats, 1996-97: 26.2 ppg, 12.5 rpg, 2.88 bpg in 51 games
Analysis: While Shaq's numbers stayed steady after his move to
L.A. in 1996, the payoff came in 2000 when O'Neal led the Lakers to
the first of three consecutive NBA titles. Shaq earned Finals MVP
honors in each of the NBA Finals, including 2002, when he set a
scoring record for a four-game Finals series with 145 points.

From: Portland Trail Blazers to Miami Heat in three-team deal

Heat's record in 1999-2000: 52-30; record in 2000-01: 52-30
Grant's stats, 1999-2000: 7.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 0.44 bpg in 63
games
Grant's stats, 2000-01: 15.2 ppg, 8.8 rpg, .087 bpg in 82 games
Analysis: Acquired to provide Alonzo Mourning powerful help in the
post, Grant ended up becoming Zo's de-facto replacement after
Mourning missed most of the season with a kidney ailment. Grant
turned in his best season and led Miami to the playoffs.

From: Grant Hill from Detroit Pistons to Orlando Magic for Ben
Wallace and Chucky Atkins in sign-and-trade deal
When: After 1999-2000 season
Magic's record in 1999-2000: 41-41; record in 2000-01: 43-39
Hill's stats, 1999-2000 : 25.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.39 spg in 74 games
Hill's stats, 2000-01: 13.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.25 spg in 4 games
Pistons' record in 1999-2000: 42-40; record in 2000-01:
32-50
Wallace's stats, 1999-2000 : 4.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.6 bpg in 81
games
Wallace's stats, 2000-01: 6.4 ppg, 13.2 rpg, 2.3 bpg in 80
games
Analysis: At the time, the deal looked like a steal for the Magic.
They received a five-time All-Star Hill after the Pistons signed him as
a free agent and then shipped him for Wallace and Chucky Atkins.
Yet Hill, who injured his ankle in the 2000 Playoffs, has played a
total of 47 games for the Magic. Wallace has won back-to-back
Defensive Player of the Year honors and has led the Pistons to 50-32
records and Central Division titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
|
From: Charlotte Hornets to Miami Heat, eight player sign-and-trade
deal
When: After 1999-2000 season

Jones' stats, 1999-2000: 20.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 4.2 apg in 72 games
Jones' stats, 2000-01: 17.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.75 spg in 63 games
Analysis: Along with Brian Grant, Jones was a key member of that
2000-01 Heat team that finished second to the Sixers in the Atlantic.
When Alonzo Mourning went down with a kidney ailment, Jones
helped Grant pick up the slack on offense despite missing 19 games
with a dislocated left shoulder.
|
From: Toronto Raptors to Orlando Magic for future conditional draft
pick
When: After 1999-2000 season
Magic's record in 1999-2000: 41-41; record in 2000-01: 43-39

games
McGrady's stats, 2000-01: 26.8 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.51 spg in 77
games
Analysis: No player has benefited more from a move than McGrady.
In his first year in Orlando, McGrady averaged 11 points per game
more than the previous season. The three-time All-Star forward has
led the Magic to the playoffs for three consecutive seasons and has
blossomed into one of the NBA's best players and brightest stars.
|
From: Chicago Bulls to Houston Rockets for Roy Rogers and
second-round pick
When: After 1997-98 season
Rockets' record in 1997-98: 41-41; record in 1998-99: 31-19
Pippen's stats, 1997-98: 19.1ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.80 spg in 44 games
Pippen's stats, 1998-99: 14.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.96 spg in 50*
games
Analysis: Coming off his sixth NBA title with the Bulls, the Rockets
hoped Pippen would be the final piece in another Houston
championship. Teamed with Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley,
Pippen helped the Rockets to the third-best record in the Midwest.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, the Lakers knocked Houston out of the
playoffs in the first round. Pippen was then traded to the Blazers in
the offseason.
