ESP - Injury agony for Lopez
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA) - Raul Lopez's NBA season is over because of a left knee injury, the Utah Jazz have confirmed.
The 24-year-old Lopez, the point guard Spain coach Mario Pesquera was hoping to tempt back into the national team set-up for Eurobasket 2005 after the player's decision to skip the Athens Olympics, requires surgery on a left knee injury suffered while playing last week.
Lopez "was devastated when I talked to him," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan to the Salt Lake Tribune. "I feel very, very bad for him."
The 1.83m star, who played for Joventut Badalona and later Real Madrid before moving to the NBA, has been one of Spain's brightest talents for several years but injuries have slowed his progress.
He sat out the entire 2002-03 NBA season after twice rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
He finally made his NBA debut with Utah in the 2003-04 campaign and did not miss a game, giving him hope that his injury nightmare was behind him.
But Lopez again experienced right knee pain in the pre-season and ended up
spending the first 21 games of the current campaign recovering from arthroscopic surgery.
Now, the knee Lopez had described as his "good one", has wrecked his season.
Kevin O'Connor, the Jazz's senior vice-president of basketball operations, says the ligaments appear to be intact.
That means an operation may not be as serious as the ligament-replacement
procedures he had with his right knee.
But when asked about Lopez returning for next season, O'Connor told the Tribune: "I can't answer that. This is his fourth surgery, so we have to see exactly what we're talking about."
"I'm afraid that sooner or later, he has to say, 'I'm spending 75% of my career on rehab.'"
Lopez's Utah team-mates are distraught.
"It really makes your heart stop to hear that," power forward Carlos Boozer said to the Tribune.
"He's been playing great. He's been a big lift to this team. And he's been through so much already...I just wish it wasn't true. Maybe we can try to cheer him up."

Spain international Pau Gasol admits he is seriously considering sitting out this year's European Championships.
The tournament will be held in Belgrade in September, but a long-standing foot injury could mean Gasol decides it is wiser to stay on the sidelines.
An inflamed heel has already ruled Gasol out of this season's NBA All-Star game, and his club side, the Memphis Grizzlies, would ideally like to see him rest his foot as much as possible.
Gasol now finds himself in a similar situation to Utah Jazz point guard Raul Lopez, who decided not to go to last summer's Olympic Games to allow himself to fully recover from a troublesome knee problem.
"Before only the doctors told me I had to stop, now everyone in the team is saying it," Gasol told Radio Marca.
"Maybe I have reached a moment when I have to stop and think, and see how a rest over the summer would allow me to recover well.
"Sometimes you have to take decisions that you don't like," he added.
The news will come as a blow to Spain coach Mario Pesquera, who on Wednesday is set to be confirmed as the man to guide the Spain side in Belgrade and for a further two years afterwards having led the team to a seventh-placed finish in Athens.
